ACID RAIN
WHAT IS ACID
RAIN?
• Acid rain is a rain or any other form
of precipitation that is unusually acidic. Acid rain is
caused by emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen
oxide, which react with the water molecules in
the atmosphere to produce acids.
• Power stations, factories and cars all burn fuels and
therefore they all produce polluting gases. Some of
these gases (especially nitrogen oxides and sulphur
dioxide) react with the tiny droplets of water in
clouds to form sulphuric and nitric acids. The rain
from these clouds then falls as very weak acid -
which is why it is known as "acid rain".
HISTORY
• The corrosive effect of polluted, acidic city air on limestone and marble was noted in the 17th century by John Evelyn,
who remarked upon the poor condition of the Arundel marbles.
• Since the Industrial Revolution, emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere have
increased. In 1852, Robert Angus Smith was the first to show the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric
pollution in Manchester, England.
• In the late 1960s, scientists began widely observing and studying the phenomenon. The term "acid rain" was coined
in 1872 by Robert Angus Smith.
• Public awareness of acid rain in the US increased in the 1970s after The New York Times published reports from
the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire of the harmful environmental effects that result from it.
• Occasional pH readings in rain and fog water of well below 2.4 have been reported in industrialized areas. Industrial
acid rain is a substantial problem in China and Russia and areas downwind from them. These areas all burn sulfur-
containing coal to generate heat and electricity.
CAUSES
Acid rain is linked to both natural and man-made sources.
• Nitrogen oxides are formed through the extreme heating of air when a
thunderstorm produces lightning.
• Sulfurous gases are discharged from erupted volcanoes and rotting vegetation.
However, most public attention has been focused on man-made sources of acid rain,
which include
• the burning of any fuel that contains sulfur and nitrogen compounds, including
public utilities, industrial broilers, motor vehicles, and chemical plants.
• Electric power generation accounted for 69 percent of total sulfur dioxide
emissions in the U.S. in 2007 and 20 percent of nitrogen oxides, according to the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
• Many industrial sources of sulfur dioxide are in the eastern U.S., particularly in
the Midwest and the Ohio Valley where coal combustion and power generation
frequently occur.
• Acid rain is not limited to the region where sources are located. Prevailing winds
can blow chemicals in the atmosphere for hundreds or even thousands of miles
before being deposited, regardless of state and country boundaries.
EFFECT
• Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters, and soils,
killing insect and aquatic life-forms, causing paint to peel, corrosion of steel structures
such as bridges, and weathering of stone buildings and statues as well as having
impacts on human health.
• Acid rain can be carried great distances in the atmosphere, not just between countries
but also from continent to continent. The acid can also take the form of snow, mists
and dry dusts. The rain sometimes falls many miles from the source of pollution but
wherever it falls it can have a serious effect on soil, trees, buildings and water.
Forest
Acid rain can affect trees in several different ways, it may:
• dissolve and wash away the nutrients and minerals in the soil
which help the trees to grow.
• cause the release of harmful substances such as aluminium into the soil.
• wear away the waxy protective coating of leaves, damaging them
and preventing them from being able to photosynthesise properly.
• A combination of these effects weakens the trees which means that they can be more easily attacked by
diseases and insects or injured by bad weather. It is not just trees that are affected by acid rain, other plants
may also suffer.
Aquatic life
• As the acidity of a lake increases, the water becomes clearer and the numbers of fish and other water animal's
decline. Some species of plant and animal are better able to survive in acidic water than others.
• Freshwater shrimps, snails, mussels are the most quickly affected by acidification followed by fish such as minnows,
salmon and roach. The roe and fry (eggs and young) of the fish are the worst affected, the acidity of the water can
cause deformity in young fish and can prevent eggs from hatching properly..
• Lakes, rivers and marshes each have their own fragile ecosystem with many different species of plants and animals
all depending on one another to survive. If a species of fish disappears, the animals which feed on it will gradually
disappear too. If the extinct fish used to feed on a particular species of large insect, that insect population will start
to grow, this in turn will affect the smaller insects or plankton on which the larger insect feeds.
Buildings
• Every type of material will become eroded sooner or later by the effects of the climate. Water,
wind, ice and snow all help in the erosion process but unfortunately, acid rain can help to make
this natural process even quicker.
• Statues, buildings, vehicles, pipes and cables can all suffer.
• The worst affected are things made from limestone or sandstone as these types of rock are
particularly susceptible and can be affected by air pollution in gaseous form as well as by acid
rain.

Plants and Crops
Acid rain can potentially reduce agricultural production by changing the chemical properties of soil,
slowing the rate of microbiological processes, and reducing soil nutrients.
Roots of natural vegetation and crops can become damaged due to stunted growth.
Human health effects
• Acid rain does not directly affect human health. The acid in the rainwater is too dilute to have direct adverse effects.
• The particulates responsible for acid rain (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) do have an adverse effect.
• Increased amounts of fine particulate matter in the air contribute to heart and lung problems,
including asthma and bronchitis.
• Acidic water moving through pipes causes lead and copper to leach into the water. Most public water suppliers remove
such dangerous chemicals at the plant, but tainted water could be a problem for residents who don’t rely on public water
supplies for their drinking water.
PREVENTIVE
MEASURES
Reduce emissions:
• • Burning fossil fuels is still one of the cheapest ways to
produce electricity so people are now researching new
ways to burn fuel which don't produce so much
pollution.
• • Governments need to spend more money on
pollution control even if it does mean an increase in the
price of electricity.
• • Sulphur can also be 'washed' out of smoke by
spraying a mixture of water and powdered limestone
into the smokestack.
• • Cars are now fitted with catalytic converters which
remove three dangerous chemicals from exhaust gases.
Find alternative sources of energy
• Governments need to invest in researching
different ways to produce energy.
• Two other sources that are currently used are
hydroelectric and nuclear power. These are 'clean'
as far as acid rain.
• Other sources could be solar energy or windmills.
Conserving Resources
• Greater subsidies of public transport by the
government to encourage people to use public
transport rather than always travelling by car.
• Every individual can try to save energy by switching
off lights when they are not being used and using
energy-saving appliances - when less electricity is
being used, pollution from power plants decreases.
• Walking, cycling and sharing cars all reduce the
pollution from vehicles
International
treaties
• International treaties on the long-range transport
of atmospheric pollutants have been agreed for
example, the 1985 Helsinki Protocol on the
Reduction of Sulphur Emissions under
the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air
Pollution.
• Canada and the US signed the Air Quality
Agreement in 1991. Most European countries and
Canada have signed the treaties.

  • 10. Plants and Crops Acid rain can potentially reduce agricultural production by changing the chemical properties of soil, slowing the rate of microbiological processes, and reducing soil nutrients. Roots of natural vegetation and crops can become damaged due to stunted growth.
  • 11. Human health effects • Acid rain does not directly affect human health. The acid in the rainwater is too dilute to have direct adverse effects. • The particulates responsible for acid rain (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) do have an adverse effect. • Increased amounts of fine particulate matter in the air contribute to heart and lung problems, including asthma and bronchitis. • Acidic water moving through pipes causes lead and copper to leach into the water. Most public water suppliers remove such dangerous chemicals at the plant, but tainted water could be a problem for residents who don’t rely on public water supplies for their drinking water.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES Reduce emissions: • • Burning fossil fuels is still one of the cheapest ways to produce electricity so people are now researching new ways to burn fuel which don't produce so much pollution. • • Governments need to spend more money on pollution control even if it does mean an increase in the price of electricity. • • Sulphur can also be 'washed' out of smoke by spraying a mixture of water and powdered limestone into the smokestack. • • Cars are now fitted with catalytic converters which remove three dangerous chemicals from exhaust gases.
  • 13. Find alternative sources of energy • Governments need to invest in researching different ways to produce energy. • Two other sources that are currently used are hydroelectric and nuclear power. These are 'clean' as far as acid rain. • Other sources could be solar energy or windmills.
  • 14. Conserving Resources • Greater subsidies of public transport by the government to encourage people to use public transport rather than always travelling by car. • Every individual can try to save energy by switching off lights when they are not being used and using energy-saving appliances - when less electricity is being used, pollution from power plants decreases. • Walking, cycling and sharing cars all reduce the pollution from vehicles
  • 15. International treaties • International treaties on the long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants have been agreed for example, the 1985 Helsinki Protocol on the Reduction of Sulphur Emissions under the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. • Canada and the US signed the Air Quality Agreement in 1991. Most European countries and Canada have signed the treaties.
