Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) Gas is a reddish brown toxic gas with a characteristic sharp and biting odour and is
produced as a result of partial combustion of fuels such as gasoline. The air surrounding us contains 70 percent
composition of nitrogen. It is a major smog-forming chemical. It leads to respiratory problems and deteriorates the
conditions of asthma. Nitrogen dioxide is irritating to the upper respiratory tract and lungs even at low
concentrations. Major sources of NO2 are internal combustion engines, thermal power stations, and, to a lesser
extent, pulp mills, and butane gas heaters and stoves.
