  1. 1. Concept,Aims,Objectives of Screening Moderator: Sipra MadamModerator: Sipra Madam Presenter: Anil KumaR Roll No: 91
  2. 2. Screening •Definition: It is a strategy used in a population to identify an unrecognised disease in individuals without signs and 2
  3. 3. Purpose of Screening • To detect early disease or risk factor for disease in large number of apparently healthy individuals. 3
  4. 4. • Active search for disease among apparently healthy people is a fundamental aspect of prevention. • This is done in screening , which has been defined as “ search for unrecognised disease or defect by means of rapidly applied tests , examinations or other procedures in apparently healthy individuals”. CONCEPT OF SCREENING
  5. 5. 5
  6. 6. • Screening differs from periodic health examination in the following aspects :  Capable of wide application  Relatively inexpensive  Requires less physician - time
  7. 7. • Basic purpose of screening is to sort out , large group of apparently healthy persons those likely to have the disease or at increased risk of disease under study. • They also bring ‘apparently abnormal’ individuals under medical supervision and treatment. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
  8. 8. • To detect outbreak or disease or production losses and causes. • To identify the undiagnosed cases of disease. • To monitor health trends in a target population. OTHER PURPOSES
  9. 9. • To monitor exposed individuals for symptoms. • To monitor treated individuals for complications. • To generate hypothesis for further evaluation. 9
  10. 10. • Early diagnosis and subsequent treatment favourably alters the natural history of the disease in a significant proportion of those who are identified as positive. 10
  11. 11. • Diagnosis of disease at individual level . • Positive results in screening needs more confirmatory tests / diagnostic tests . IT DOES NOT INTEND FOR.....
