Every computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone can be adjusted using the settings that are built in. For some people it’s just about personalisation. For a disabled person it can be life-changing.
In this this free webinar you will learn about:
- The options available on desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones
- Common problems that we deal with on our free helpline
- How to help identify what changes would be useful
- How to make the changes
- The free resources that AbilityNet provides to help disabled people
The session will be ideal for anyone who advises disabled people, including Disability Advisers, charities that work with disabled people and staff and volunteers or others who support disabled people.
The session is delivered by Alex Barker and Mark Walker from AbilityNet, a UK charity that provides free computer help to disabled people.

Who have we helped?
• Jon has dyslexia and finds certain text styles or fonts difficult to
read, particularly a styles with serifs such as Times New Roman, or
‘cluttered’ scripts such as Helvetica Narrow.
• He finds a sans-serif style like Arial or Verdana much more user
friendly.
• MCMW showed him how to change fonts on his computer and in his
web browser.
• Now reading text is much easier and less tiring.
• He can also make the text easier to read by displaying it on a
coloured background and changing the font size.

Changing the text size
13
• As far as she knows Enid hasn’t got a disability as
such but she has noticed changes in her eyesight
which causes a lot of dazzle from the screen and
makes reading text difficult and tiring.
• Changing the text size by just a little bit means that
she can continue to shop online!

Changing the text size
• Don’t be scared to experiment with changing the text size.
• If it’s too small then enlarge it, and then if it ends up being too big
then you can always reduce it.
• Decide if you want to make universal settings or just change the
settings in particular pieces of software.
• If you decide to make changes, do them one by one. This way, if
you make a change that you don’t like you can easily “step back”.
• Making wholesale changes makes it far harder to go back if they
aren’t working.
