Resources
→ Online resource is web pages and documents
on the Internet that provide useful
information. While an online resource is
typically data and educational in nature, any
support software available online can also be
considered a resource.

4. What is Listening?
⚝ Listening is a skill in
a sense that it's a
related but distinct
process than hearing
which involves
merely perceiving
sound in a passive
way while listening
occupies an active
and immediate
analysis of the
streams of sounds.
5. Teaching Listening
Requires a bit more on the part of the teacher than that of the
learners. Good listening lessons go beyond the main listening
task itself with related activities before and after the listening.

9. What is
Speaking?
# Speaking is the productive skill in
the oral mode. It, like the other
skills, is more complicated than
it seems at first and involves
more than just pronouncing
words. The speaker nevertheless
can see the audience and judge
from the expressions on their
faces and body language whether
or not he or she is being
understood.

14. Listening and Speaking in
ELT
Consider how students will
respond.
Listening cannot be seen;
we must infer student’s
comprehension from their
responses.
Teach conscious listening
strategies for beyond the
classroom.
Listen for key words,
guess at meaning,
observe non-verbal cues;
seek clarification; guess
at meaning from context,
listen for general ideas;
listen for details.
Engage both bottom-up
(linguistic knowledge) and top-
down (background knowledge)
listening processes.
15. Relevant Activity of Listening Skill
1. Filling Gap
- This technique can be done by emptying a few words in a paragraph or dialog.
Ask students listen to the spoken text through a teacher or a recording and fills the
words empty.
2. Guessing Picture
- This can be done by guessing pictures corresponding oral texts that are read or
heard.
3. Finding Mistakes
- This technique is done by asking listening to spoken text and underline words
that are not suitable with the spoken text.

spoken text.
5. Rearranging Sentences/Paragraph
- This technique is done by giving a sentence or hiatus paragraph to students.
Students are required to listen to the spoken text and make sentences / paragraphs
becomes true.
6. Matching
- This technique is done by breaking the conversation into two parts. The first part
contains half the sentence and the second half of the sentence. Then the students
were asked to listen to a conversation and match the text first and second part of
the conversation appropriate text.
16. Relevant Activity of Listening Skill
1. ASK AND ANSWER
- Students are asked to do a question and answer
session.
2. DESCRIBE AND DRAW
- Students compare their pictures and give score
according to their ability.
3. DISCUSSION
- Students are divided in groups and discussed
topics to the picture.
4. GUESSING
- Teacher or some students have an information
that must be guessed by students or other
groups to ask in English.
17. Cont’….
5. REMEMBERRING
- Students close their eyes and remember the
picture, for example objects in the classroom
or the location of places.
6. MIMING
- A student practicing certain expressions such
feelings, do an activity, and more. While
other students guess.
7. ORDERING
- Students are asked to do something by asking
where is it to find a suitable place.
8. COMPLETING A
FORM/QUESTIONNAIRE
- Students questioning, or to provide certain
information to complete a form, or a quiz.
9. ROLE PLAY
- This technique is suitable for learners who
have reached the intermediate level and above.
18. Benefits of Internet Resources
• Extensive & diverse resource of
materials
• Available 24/7
• Suitable for different levels
• Authentic materials
• Audio & video resources
• Time- & cost-saving for
teachers and learners
• Useful tools
19. Online Resources
for Speaking &
Listening
Merriam-Webster Dictionaries: This
website contains a free online
dictionary, thesaurus, Spanish-English
and medical dictionaries, audio
pronunciations, Word of the Day, and
many more English language resources.
Students can look up the meaning of a
word and hear its correct pronunciation
or play one of the word games.
VOA News: This site has news stories
recorded specifically for English
language learners. The stories have
transcripts to accompany them, and are
often in a conversational format (with a
reporter discussing something with a
guest). In addition to news stories, they
have stories about American

for Speaking &
Listening
Story Corps: This site is produced
by npr and shares interviews and
conversations that air on NPR's
Morning Edition. (The site also
gives instructions to those who
might wish to record their own
story!)
You Tube: You Tube (or other
online video sites) can be a useful
tool for teaching listening skills.
This article shares some ideas for
utilizing online videos. Instructors
can review difficult vocabulary, ask
students to summarize the video,
or create listening comprehension
questions to quiz the student after
watching a video.
21. Online Resources for
Speaking & Listening
Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening Lab: This
website provides a way for ESL students
to improve their listening skills outside of
the classroom by providing autonomous
study materials. Low-level students, or
those with limited computer skills, would
benefit from guidance from a tutor,
however. Although the site includes
listening “tests,” the main objective of
the site isn't to test students listening
skills; rather, by doing the variety of pre-
listening, listening, and post-listening
activities, students can discover ways to
learn how to develop their listening
skills.
English for All: This website is a free,
multimedia website for adults learning
English as a Second Language. You need
to register to use the site, but once you
do, you'll have access to the English for
All curriculum.
22. Online Resources for
