ARCHITECTURE OF GOVERNANCE
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is headed
by a Municipal commissioner, appointed by the
government of Gujarat. He is the administrative head. The
city is at present divided into six zones namely, central,
east, west, north, south and new west zone. Each zone is
further split into nine wards. There are 64 wards. Each
ward is represented by 3 Corporators. An election is held
to elect Corporators to after every 5 years. The mayor
heads the party with the largest number of Corporators
elected.
The AMC is responsible for certain obligatory and
discretionary services such as supply of portable water,
sewerage, solid waste management, primary education
services, health and medical services, street lighting,
construction or acquisition of public markets, slaughter
houses, and cattle pounds, fire services etc. AMC has 58
city centers across the city to facilitate delivery of
municipal services to its citizen.
The Water Operation (electrical and mechanical)
Department looks after operation and maintenance of
different water distribution stations and borewell located
in different wards of the city. The main functions of the
department are: water supply to the citizen, operation
and maintenance (O&M) of water distribution stations,
O&M of borewells, SITC work of electrical & mechanical
equipments for new water distribution stations
constructed by the water project department, construction
of new bore wells, augmentation & energy efficiency
works related to water distribution stations & bore wells,
energy audit.
The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) is
responsible for overseeing and sanctioning construction
and infrastructure development across the suburbs of the
city of Ahmadabad. The prime objective of the AUDA's
formation was to carry out the planned development of
the area failing outside the periphery of Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation. Recently the area of working of
AUDA has been limited due to merger of 18 Gram
Panchanyats of Ahmedabad district with the Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation. AUDA completed many works in
the metro region of Ahmedabad. The development
authority is coming up with a state-of-the-art office on
Ashram Road, Ahmadabad.
• City Governance at Ahmedabad (AMC) has taken a
number of unique and path breaking initiatives in
all key areas of urban governance
• Large number of initiatives are already successfully
implemented with encouraging results. Further
initiatives are in the process.
• Many initiatives include private sector participation
through relatively complex bidding, concession
and risk sharing arrangements.
• Overall, initiatives have led to higher level of services to
citizens, with far reaching economic,
environmental and quality of life implications
• Reach of services to Urban Poor focused in the areas of
Education, Health, Sanitation, Water Supply

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation
(AMC)
Ahmedabad municipal Corporation (AMC) was established in
year 1950 and
this department manages all the administration and the
construction works
for the city of Ahmedabad.
The 190.84 sq km area within the AMC limits consists of:
1. The traditional city center within the fort walls with relatively
highdensity
development, large concentration of commercial activities and
narrow streets,
2. The eastern sector accommodating large and small industries
and low
income residential areas, and
3. A well planned western sector with wide roads
accommodating major
institutions and high-income residential areas.

(AUA)
The Greater Ahmedabad Urban agglomeration is an amalgam
covering an
area of about 4200 sq. Km is an amalgam of (Refer Map-2-1).
The map
reveals:
1. An area of 190 square kilometers is under the jurisdiction of
Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation (AMC), and
2. 150 villages in the periphery of the city are under the
jurisdiction of
Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA),
3. 9 Municipalities in the periphery of the city are under the
jurisdiction of
Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA),
4. Gandhinagar and the surrounding villages,
5. Chatral, Bopal and other surrounding villages adjoining AUDA
limits .

(AUDA)
• AUDA was constituted under the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban
Development Act, 1976 in 1978 to regulate and monitor the
development
in the periphery of the Corporation limits and the adjoining 300
villages
and 9 municipalities.
• The major function of the authority is to undertake the preparation
of the
development plan, Town planning schemes, regulate the development
and
collect the development charges in the area of its jurisdiction
• In addition to the area falling under AMC’s limit, it also include 107
settlements around it, 4 towns , 103 villages of Ahmedabad district.
The
expansion of AUDA comes of 129465 hectares (129465 sq km) area
which
include Ahmedabad city (municipal corporation) of 44900 hectares.

  • 4. ARCHITECTURE OF GOVERNANCE The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is headed by a Municipal commissioner, appointed by the government of Gujarat. He is the administrative head. The city is at present divided into six zones namely, central, east, west, north, south and new west zone. Each zone is further split into nine wards. There are 64 wards. Each ward is represented by 3 Corporators. An election is held to elect Corporators to after every 5 years. The mayor heads the party with the largest number of Corporators elected. The AMC is responsible for certain obligatory and discretionary services such as supply of portable water, sewerage, solid waste management, primary education services, health and medical services, street lighting, construction or acquisition of public markets, slaughter houses, and cattle pounds, fire services etc. AMC has 58 city centers across the city to facilitate delivery of municipal services to its citizen. The Water Operation (electrical and mechanical) Department looks after operation and maintenance of different water distribution stations and borewell located in different wards of the city. The main functions of the department are: water supply to the citizen, operation and maintenance (O&M) of water distribution stations, O&M of borewells, SITC work of electrical & mechanical equipments for new water distribution stations constructed by the water project department, construction of new bore wells, augmentation & energy efficiency works related to water distribution stations & bore wells, energy audit. The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) is responsible for overseeing and sanctioning construction and infrastructure development across the suburbs of the city of Ahmadabad. The prime objective of the AUDA's formation was to carry out the planned development of the area failing outside the periphery of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Recently the area of working of AUDA has been limited due to merger of 18 Gram Panchanyats of Ahmedabad district with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. AUDA completed many works in the metro region of Ahmedabad. The development authority is coming up with a state-of-the-art office on Ashram Road, Ahmadabad.
  • 5. • City Governance at Ahmedabad (AMC) has taken a number of unique and path breaking initiatives in all key areas of urban governance • Large number of initiatives are already successfully implemented with encouraging results. Further initiatives are in the process. • Many initiatives include private sector participation through relatively complex bidding, concession and risk sharing arrangements. • Overall, initiatives have led to higher level of services to citizens, with far reaching economic, environmental and quality of life implications • Reach of services to Urban Poor focused in the areas of Education, Health, Sanitation, Water Supply & Roads Urban Governance in the Ahmedabad context

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Ahmedabad municipal Corporation (AMC) was established in year 1950 and this department manages all the administration and the construction works for the city of Ahmedabad. The 190.84 sq km area within the AMC limits consists of: 1. The traditional city center within the fort walls with relatively highdensity development, large concentration of commercial activities and narrow streets, 2. The eastern sector accommodating large and small industries and low income residential areas, and 3. A well planned western sector with wide roads accommodating major institutions and high-income residential areas.

  • 11. AHMEDABAD URBAN AGGLOMERATION (AUA) The Greater Ahmedabad Urban agglomeration is an amalgam covering an area of about 4200 sq. Km is an amalgam of (Refer Map-2-1). The map reveals: 1. An area of 190 square kilometers is under the jurisdiction of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and 2. 150 villages in the periphery of the city are under the jurisdiction of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), 3. 9 Municipalities in the periphery of the city are under the jurisdiction of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), 4. Gandhinagar and the surrounding villages, 5. Chatral, Bopal and other surrounding villages adjoining AUDA limits . INDORE

AhmedabadIndore Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) • AUDA was constituted under the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act, 1976 in 1978 to regulate and monitor the development in the periphery of the Corporation limits and the adjoining 300 villages and 9 municipalities. • The major function of the authority is to undertake the preparation of the development plan, Town planning schemes, regulate the development and collect the development charges in the area of its jurisdiction • In addition to the area falling under AMC’s limit, it also include 107 settlements around it, 4 towns , 103 villages of Ahmedabad district. The expansion of AUDA comes of 129465 hectares (129465 sq km) area which include Ahmedabad city (municipal corporation) of 44900 hectares.
