live 7 years longer?
Who want’s to learn how to save $500,000 during retirement?
OK THEN… Let’s
GET STARTED !!!
3. Who IS the world designed FOR?
Listening
The world around us as we know it, is designed for:
Able-bodied
Right-handed
Young adults, with
Average height and
Average weight,
Perfect sight and
Perfect hearing, and the
Ability to verbally communicate their needs to another human being.
Does that definition fit YOU? Your PARENTS?
Will it in 5, 10, 20 years?
What are you doing NOW to plan for THEN???
That’s why I’m here today to share my message…
4. What is “Aging In Place” ?
Listening
The concept that you can (and should be able to) stay in your residence or current living location, or choose your own new residence, for the remainder of your life, regardless of changes to your physical, cognitive, or other changes to your body and abilities that may occur with age.
We are EMPOWERING THE MATURE MARKET to be
a PRO-ACTIVE
part of their own SOLUTION!!!
5. Do I REALLY need to think about this NOW?
Listening
6. PAUSE… Let’s Talk PASSION - Why ME?
The Personal Side…
The Financial Side…
7. The SHOCKING Stats & Data
THE PEOPLE:
As of Jan. 2011, 10,000 people turn 65 in the U.S. Every DAY!
Someone turns 65 y.o. every EIGHT SECONDS in the U.S.
80+ year olds will increase from 0.5% in 1950 to 5% in 2040.
We’ve created 30 years of longevity increase in the last 100 years, more than the previous 5,000 years
THE HOUSING:
2/3 of Suburbia is currently “Empty Nested” – The kids are GONE.
That statistic will soon be 75% (3/4)
We have 100+ years of homes not designed correctly for this demographic change ahead in the next 20-30 years
The “Baby Boomer” Bulge
Population Distribution by Age, showing changes from 1950 to 2040…
8. So… Where to I START?
Listening
FURNITURE LAYOUT
Circulation / Paths of Travel “Routine” & Intuitive
RUGS
“Grandma’s THROW has GOT TO GO!”
“DROP ZONES”
Pick Up for SAFETY
STAIRS & THRESHOLDS
A “TRIP” to the E.R.?
Floors & Moisture
“GET A GRIP” – Grit/Texture, Zero-Thresholds

“Too High? Don’t Try” – On YOUR level…
STEP #1 - Creating your “FOREVER HOME” Starts with COMMON SENSE!
Preventative Planning costs a FRACTION of PANIC Re-ACTION…
9. Technology & Design for SAFETY
Housing Features Important to Seniors –
According to AARP
FEATURES –
Non-slip floor surfaces
Bathroom aides such as grab bars
A personal alert system for call emergency
Entrance without steps
Wider doorways
Lever-handled door knobs
Higher electrical outlets
Lower electrical switches
Most of the features Seniors are looking for in a home aren’t placed correctly in a standard SPEC house.
MOBILITY + SAFETY =
COMFORT @ HOME, the KEY to Successful “Aging in Place”
10. START the Conversation… NOW!
FEEL / FELT / FOUND
“I know / understand how you feel…”
“I’ve felt like that before, when… “
“When I’ve felt like that, I’ve found…”
STEP #2 – Start the Conversation
…The truth is 3 LEVELS Deep… Start Peeling that ONION!
The ART and the SCIENCE of the “Soft Start-Up”
Psychology is at play here… be GENTLE and TACTFUL
“CHILD” becoming the “PARENT” – not an easy transition
This Takes TIME – “Wine and the Waiting Game”…
PATIENCE + PERSISTENCE + LOVE = SUCCESS
“Language Choices” can make all the difference!!!
Empathy can go a LONG WAY, as can how YOU FEEL…
11. Go “TEAM”! – The More the Merrier!
STEP #3 – Assemble a TEAM
…”It Takes a Village”…
I’m just a Quarterback – No EGO
Here are a few Examples:
Family Members (medical history)
Contractor (Installations of Products/Tech.)
Mortgage Specialist / Long Term Care Insur.
Real Estate Agent (moving / downsizing)
Retirement Financial Planner (the $$ math)
Elder Care Attorney (wills & power of attorney)
Physical Therapist / Occupational Therapist
Elder Care Advocate / Geriatric Care Manager
and more…
A CAPS Architect – “My Role”
We can help connect you to all the team members you may need, & facilitate coordination & meetings between all parties required for a successful outcome…
Helping the aging family member to stay INDEPENDENT is a TEAM effort…
12. PLANNING: “Begin with the End in Mind”
Take the “BALL and
SOCK” TEST at HOME!!!
STEP #4 – PLAN! BEGIN with the END in MIND
…”Ounce of Prevention vs. a Pound of Cure”…
It’s MORE than just a grab bar in a shower, folks…
13. DESIGN before you BUILD!
GET IT RIGHT
“ON PAPER” FIRST!
“It costs $1 to move a line. It costs $1000 to move a wall…”
Aaron Murphy, ADM Architecture
“Measure Twice, Cut ONCE.”
Start in PLANNING mode, not PANIC mode!!!
Good Design PAYS for ITSELF many times over in mistakes NOT MADE
with later decisions in Construction!
14. Weigh your $$ OPTIONS $$
The “COST CLARITY” of NOT Planning…
-Assisted Living: $46,000/yr. average = $4,000 per month!
-Nursing Home: $96,000/yr. average = $8,000 per month! Aging in Place REMODEL: $750/mo. HELOC Add 20 hrs per week @ $19/hr. for help @ home and SAVE $33,000 per YEAR! $500K in 12-15 years…!!!! Can you AFFORD to WAIT for a FALL???
STEP #5 – Weigh ALL of your OPTIONS
…”Aging in Place isn’t your ONLY choice, but it’s almost EVERYONE’S FIRST CHOICE”…
15. Universal doesn’t need to be Institutional
Good Universal Design “Disappears” – Thoughtful Integration creates a seamless result
New Products are making a BIG DIFFERENCE:
-Dishwashers with pull out drawers
-Microwaves as drawers under counter
-Upper Cabinets that pull out & down
-Lower Cabinets that pull out & up
Balanced Lighting (Eyesight)
Fixture Controls (Mobility)

Open Vertical Slot
Storage (Mobility)
