INTRODUCTION
 Widely known as ISO, is an international standard setting
body composed of representatives from various national
standards organizations.
 Founded on February 23,1947, the organization promotes
worldwide proprietary, industrial, & commercial standards.
 Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO is composed of
162 members, each one the sole representative for their home
country.
 As the largest developer & publisher of standards in the world,
ISO fills the vital role of a medium for agreement between
individual standard developers, spreading progress made by
one country's local developers across the world to further the
goal of standardization.

 ISO International Standards ensure that products &
services are safe, reliable & of good quality.
 For business, they are strategic tools that reduce costs
by minimizing waste & errors and increasing productivity.
 ISO is a nonprofit organization that develops &
publishes standards of virtually every possible sort,

SALIENT FEATURES

 World federation of 123 countries national standards

 ISO 9000 series is the general quality certification standard

 Presently, India has about 5000 ISO 9000 companies.
ISO 9000 : Quality System
 The ISO 9000 family of standards is related to QMS &
designed to help organizations ensure that they meet the
needs of customers & other stakeholders while meeting
statutory & regulatory requirements related to the product.
 The standards are published by ISO, & available through
National standards bodies.
 ISO 9000 QSS were introduced in 1987 which were revised
in 1994 & again in 2000. Objectives of these periodic
revisions are to satisfy needs of standard users.
 The 1987 series comprises ISO 9000, which embraces ISO
9001, ISO 9002 & ISO 9003.
ISO 9001-
Model for quality in design/ development, production,
installation & servicing.
ISO 9002-
Model for QA in production & installation.
ISO 9003-
Model for QA in final inspection & testing this standard is used
for external QA purposes.
The 2000 revision which was first major revision of standard
resulted in the following 3 standards:
1. ISO 9000:2000
2. ISO 9001:2000
3. ISO 9004:2000
1. ISO 9000:2000 QMS
 ISO 9000 deals with the fundamentals & vocabulary of
QMS, including the 8 management principles on which the
family of standards is based. These are:
• Customer focus
• Leadership
• Involvement of people
• Process approach
• System approach to management
• Continuous improvement
• Factual approach to decision making
• Mutually beneficial supply relationship
FUNDAMENTALS
ISO 9000 standards recognizes 12 fundamental principles
which are basis for contents of ISO 9001:2000 & ISO
9004:2000 QMS standards. These fundamentals which
incorporate 8 QM principles are:-

2. Requirements for QMS & for products
3. QMS approach
4. Process approach
5. Quality policy & quality objective

2. ISO 9001:2000 QMS
 ISO 9001 standard is a most widely used standard among
ISO 9000 family.
 Used by companies, seeking to have QMS recognized
through an independent registration process.
 Designed for use by an organization that uses to enhance
satisfaction of its customers.
3. ISO 9004:2000 QMS
 These standards provide guidelines in contrast to ISO 9001
standards, which specifies requirements.
 Designed for use by an organization that seeks to move
beyond the requirements of ISO 9001, to improve the
performance of organization to satisfy its customers.
 By contrast it covers the effectiveness of an organization
QMS.
 It provides guidance on technical, administrative & human
factors affecting the quality of products & services at all
stages of quality loop.

ISO 22000
 ISO 22000:2005 specifies requirements for a food safety
management system where an organization in food chain needs
to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards in order

 Applicable to all organizations which are involved in any aspect
of the food chain.
 Ensures that organizations confirms to its stated food safety
policy.
