13. Early Childhood Activity
Australian School Library Association Inc.

I began my unit with the children in the Early Learning Centre
today. We had a ball. We read "Flashlight" by Lizi Boyd, a
wordless picture. We discussed different light sources then
explored light. We did a science experiment about light. The
children then explored coloured tiles on a light box, torches,
shadow puppets using an overhead projector (I provided some
to retell the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, but the
children were encouraged to make their own), used our bodies
to create shadows on the walls with an overhead, prisms etc.
The explorations were great. We looked at earlobes, veins in
hands, inside people's mouths, one boy was exploring things
around the room, he lit up the sun on the cover of a book with
his torch. Definitely encourage this as an activity.
