MEANING ?
• The action of leading a group of people or an
organization, or the ability to do this.
• Leadership is the process of influencing behaviour
of others.
• It is a group activity. Leader influences his followers
and followers also exercise influence over his
leader.

• Wendell French has defined leadership as, “the
process of influencing the behaviour of others in
the direction of a goal or set of goals or, more
broadly, a vision of the future.”
• According to Keith Davis, “Leadership is the process
of encouraging and helping others to work
enthusiastically towards objectives.”

Bureaucratic Leadership
• It is characterized by command, rules and
regulations, specialization of work, division of
labour, and impersonality of relationships.
• The leader trusts neither himself nor his
subordinates and mainly relies on the rules
and regulations.
• Everything must be done according to
procedure or policy.

Laissez-Faire Leadership
• The French phrase Laissez-Faire means “leave
it be” and is used to describe a leader who
leaves his or her colleagues to get on with
their work offering little or no guidance.
• laissez-faire leadership works for teams in
which the individuals are very qualified,
experienced, expert and skilled self-starters.

• This type of leadership motivates individuals to work
together to change organizations to create
sustainable productivity
• The transformational leader asks followers to
transcend their own self interests for the good of the
group, organization, or society; to consider their

• Transactional leaders lead through specific
incentives and motivate through an
exchange of one thing for another (Bass,
1990).
• These leaders reward their subordinates
for precisely the work they do.

Weaknesses of trait theory
• Personality traits of successful leaders are too
many. Some of the traits are also possessed by
those who are not leaders.
• There is no solid method to measure these
traits.
• Effectiveness of leadership cannot be solely
determined by traits alone. Situation is also
responsible for it.
