4. Continuing Professional Development
Requirements for Specialists in BC
The Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC requires
that all specialists practising in BC must enrol in the Maintenance
of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
The RCPSC has agreed to document the CPD activities for nonmembers, subject to the payment of an administrative/registration
fee of $390. Actual membership in RCPSC will not be required.
The fee provides access to MAINPORT and the Educational Support
Centre, a yearly credit summary and a listing in the CPD Program
Directory.

7. The CPD Program supports three types of continuing
professional development activities:
Group learning
Self-learning
Practice assessment
These eligible learning activities are based on the
CanMEDS definition of the seven core competencies
needed for medical education and practice.

9. Participation in the CPD Program
The program is based on a five-year cycle, with the
first cycle beginning on January 1 of the year following
your registration.
The time between initial registration in the program and
starting the first cycle is considered a bonus period.
CPD Program participants are not required to partake in the
program during this bonus period; however, learning activities
completed during the bonus period will count toward the
requirements of the first CPD Program cycle.

10. Participation in the CPD Program
Program requirements
Participants are required to complete a minimum of:
40 credits in each year of a cycle by participating in
continuing professional development activities and
reporting the outcomes of those activities, as outlined in
the Framework of Continuing Professional Development
Activities, and
400 credits during the span of a cycle.

Reporting activities
MAINPORT (www.mainport.org) is an easy-to-use online tool
that offers participants the ability to track learning activities in
a simple and convenient way. Participants simply enter their
completed continuing professional development activities in
MAINPORT and the time spent participating in activities is
converted into credits.

Participants are responsible for ensuring that all continuing
professional development activities for the year are reported
by January 31 of the following year.
