About ST Scope &
ECCO
About ST Scope and ECCO

Strategic Scope Kft. has been working as a full service agency in Hungary for 18 years
mainly in the fields of energy, media, the tobacco industry, motorway construction,
environment protection and nonprofit sector with clients including ministries, local-
governments and various public sector groups.

The company has been a member of the ECCO International Network since 2004. The
main reason we joined ECCO was to become part of the professional mainstream as well
as to share the best practice and experience and the international networking background.
ST Scope

+36 (0) 1 340 5420 The company currently makes use of its social media experience in connection with a

Country research
Country research

Hungarian social network users tend to choose foreign social media sites translated into
Hungarian. Hungarian users first appeared on MySpace. Hi5 having 504 000 members
and Facebook having 200 000 members in March 2009 (Digitális Média, Tények könyve
2009, NEO).

The most visited social media websites in Hungary according to Szonda Ipsos – Gemius/
Ipsos Audience, in January 2009:

> iwiw.hu

> myvip.com

> hotdog.hu

> dada.net

> baratikor.com

> mySpace.com

> network.hu

> facebook.com

                                                                        www.stscope.hu 6

Different social
media types
Different social media types

User generated contents can be divided into four main categories:

> Video contents

> Social networking sites

> Blogs

> Virtual worlds

Social networking sites are created to provide a platform for virtual communities. They
can be used for a particular function as in the case of Twitter where only 140 characters
(microblog entries) can be posted answering one question, “What are you doing now?”
Another type of social networking systems is built to provide users several website
functions like photo albums, videos, blogs, mailing etc. The most versatile platforms such
as Facebook offer a wide range of opportunities to use and share the so called widgets
created by the community (DIGITÁLIS MÉDIA Tények könyve 2009, NEO).

                                                                         www.stscope.hu 8

Case study

Case study examples

Hungarian companies are still looking at the ways and means
of how best to exploit the advantages of social media. Hardly
any companies are using social media tools at the moment,
consequently no relevant case studies can be found on the
Internet. Twitter is becoming more and more popular in the
business sphere but few firms consider this sort of tool important
yet. Research on Hungarian Twitters is available here:

           http://terepnaplo.freeblog.hu/files/magyar_twitter_kutatas_2009.pdf
           (Hungarian Twitter Research 2009)

Online social media
tools, tricks and
listening to the
online conversation
Online social media tools, tricks and listening to
the online conversation

International and country-specific online tools for listening into online brand conversations
available in Hungary are listed below:

/ General Tools:

> Google Alerts – can help you track what is being said and receive streaming or batched
reports. Set a comprehensive alert to monitor across various media – news, blogs, web,
  videos and groups.
> Dolphia – is a Hungarian search engine for social news.

/ Platform-specific Tools include:

> Google Blog Search (and Google Blog Alerts) – Google’s index of blog posts, allows
you to see who is blogging about your brand and what they’re saying. With Google
Blog Alerts you can set up daily, weekly or as-it-happens alerts for any time someone
  mentions your brand online.
> Technorati allows you to search the blogosphere. You should search for your brand on
Technorati and subscribe to RSS alerts so you can find out when someone blogs about
  you.
> Miner.hu – is the second blog searching tool in Hungary. You cannot add a new blog but
a search engine examines available blogs
> Blogsearch.hu – is the first country-specific platform for blog search although it proved
useful only after an improved relaunch.

                                                                           www.stscope.hu 12

Popular blog tools
and blog posts
Popular blog tools and blog posts

Country-specific blog tools do exist in Hungary. Three popular general blog sites are
frequently mentioned on the Internet. These are:

> freeblog.hu
> blog.hu
> blogter.hu

Some of the most reliable PR and marketing blog sites are the following:

> Médiablog (mediablog.hvg.hu)
> Doransky (doransky.hu)
> Webisztán (webisztan.blog.hu)
> Karmamédia (karma.blog.hu)
> Terepnapló (terepnaplo.freeblog.hu)

Equally, some international blog tools are also popular among domestic bloggers such as
the Hungarian versions of Wordpress and Blogger (Google).

Hungarian blog users insist on their favorite blog sites regularly visited in the evenings. 50%
of bloggers are between the age of 20-32 and 58% of active Internet users reading blogs
are men. Recent case studies on bloggers cannot be reached via Internet but a research
from 2007 is available from the following link:
http://www.median.hu//kepek/upload/2007-06/M_M_blogok.pdf

Up-to-date information on blog user statistics is available from the link below:
http://www.webaudit.hu/

                                                                            www.stscope.hu 14

Other useful social
media tools
Other useful social media tools

RSS Directories can be found at http://rss.lap.hu/

Technorati blog search engine is also used in Hungary.

Website/Blog statistics tools:

> MyStat.hu (http://mystat.hu/index.php) – country-specific intelligence gathering tool to
  measure visitors to blogs
> Google Analytics (http://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/analytics/index.html)

The main social bookmarking sites in Hungary:

> Del.icio.hu (http://del.icio.hu/belepes)
> URLguru.hu (http://urlguru.hu/)
> Linkgyujto.info (http://linkgyujto.info/)
> Linkter.hu (http://linkter.hu/)

No country-specific social media measurement and evaluation tools are available in
Hungary.

  • 8. Different social media types User generated contents can be divided into four main categories: > Video contents > Social networking sites > Blogs > Virtual worlds Social networking sites are created to provide a platform for virtual communities. They can be used for a particular function as in the case of Twitter where only 140 characters (microblog entries) can be posted answering one question, “What are you doing now?” Another type of social networking systems is built to provide users several website functions like photo albums, videos, blogs, mailing etc. The most versatile platforms such as Facebook offer a wide range of opportunities to use and share the so called widgets created by the community (DIGITÁLIS MÉDIA Tények könyve 2009, NEO). www.stscope.hu 8
