Introduction
of the Bridge
• The Bogibeel Rail cum Road
Bridge is a combined bridge
across the Brahmaputra River in
the northeastern state of Assam,
India.
• It connects the Dibrugarh and
Dhemaji districts of Assam and is
the longest rail-cum-road bridge
in India.
• The estimated cost of the Bogibeel
Rail cum Road Bridge was around
Rs. 5,900 crore.
About the
Bridge
• The construction of the bridge
started in 2002 and was
completed in 2018.
• The foundation stone for the
project was laid by then Prime
Minister of India Atal Bihari
Vajpayee in 2002.
• It was inaugurated and opened
for public use by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi in 2018.
Characteristics of
the Bridge
• The Bogibeel Bridge is 4.94 km long and
has a width of 33 meters.
• It has two railway tracks and a three-
lane road on either side.
• The Bridge is based on Truss Bridge
Design.
• Material Used in the bridge are Steel and
Concrete.
• Longest Span of Bridge is 125m (410 ft).
• Total numbers of span in the bridge is 41.

of It
• The bridge is significant for
improving connectivity
between the north and south
banks of the Brahmaputra
River, which is otherwise a
major barrier for
transportation in the region.

Feats
• The bridge is designed to withstand
earthquakes of magnitudes up to 7 on
the Richter scale and high wind speeds
of up to 266 km/h.
• It is supported by 42 pillars, each 60
meters high and weighing around
2,000 tonnes.

including the displacement of several
communities and loss of forests and
