Application Example
Objective
Optimize race car performance by predicting
aerodynamics of the air intake system.
ANSYS Solution
• The Coburg Automobile Team (CAT) generated a
parameterized CAD model, and improved the car’s air
intake system using ANSYS CFD within the parametric
ANSYS Workbench environment
• With an automatic optimization loop in ANSYS
Workbench, CAT Racing optimized the number of
guide vanes, their opening angle of the air box and
other parameters.
Design Impact
The new air intake system generated the correct amount
of torque at the right speed which enabled CAT Racing
to win two second-place finishes.

Application Example
Objective
Speedup the optimization process of a wing design.
Conventional methods typically take a couple of months.
ANSYS Solution
• Piaggio Aero Industries teamed with the University of
Rome Tor Vergata to validate a new optimization
method that generates a single mesh and morphs it
to any new geometry.
• ANSYS DesignXplorer was used to parametrically
drive RBF Morph to map out the complete design
space, identify optimal design, and validate its
robustness in just a few weeks.
Design Impact
With ANSYS software, the design optimization took a
couple of weeks, less than a tenth of the time required
to optimize the design using conventional methods.

• Improve mixing while reducing energy
• Design objective:
– Optimize the inlet velocities within their operating limits so that both
temperature spread at the outlet and pressure drop in the vessel are minimized
• Input Parameters: fluid velocity at the cold and hot inlet (8 Design Points)
• Detail:
– K-Epsilon Model with Standard Wall Functions
– 52,000 nodes and 280,000 elements
– Hardware: HP workstation with dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2687W
(3.10 GHz, 16 cores), 128 GB memory

• 1 ANSYS Fluent
• 2 ANSYS HPC Parametric Packs

• ~4.8x speedup over sequential execution

ANSYS Solution • The Coburg Automobile Team (CAT) generated a parameterized CAD model, and improved the car’s air intake system using ANSYS CFD within the parametric ANSYS Workbench environment • With an automatic optimization loop in ANSYS Workbench, CAT Racing optimized the number of guide vanes, their opening angle of the air box and other parameters. Design Impact The new air intake system generated the correct amount of torque at the right speed which enabled CAT Racing to win two second-place finishes. ANSYS Solution • Piaggio Aero Industries teamed with the University of Rome Tor Vergata to validate a new optimization method that generates a single mesh and morphs it to any new geometry. • ANSYS DesignXplorer was used to parametrically drive RBF Morph to map out the complete design space, identify optimal design, and validate its robustness in just a few weeks. Design Impact With ANSYS software, the design optimization took a couple of weeks, less than a tenth of the time required to optimize the design using conventional methods.
