Kulumsa Agricultural Research Center is one of the Federal Research Centers of EIAR; center of excellence for wheat research. Laboratories in the center includes Agricultural Chemistry, Seed Quality Testing, Microbiology (Pathology), and Food Science and Nutrition.
Agricultural and Nutritional Research Laboratories of EIAR which is established in 2012 has given focus to strengthen laboratories to enhance quality agricultural research in the system. Capacity building areas such as renovation of laboratories, recruitment of laboratory staffs, facilitation of purchase of equipment, supplies, etc were given highest attention by the directorate for the last few years. This report describes the current state of Kulumsa Agricultural Research Center which is reported by Abraha G/Giorgis (representative of the center laboratories).

INSTRUMENTS AT THE NUTRITIONAL AND FOOD SCIENCE LABORATORY
1. FOSS Infrared 1241 grain analyzer (with flour Module) Analysis options Required for Crop

The facility could be calibrated for more testing (paste, liquids, etc);

Measures gluten content(wet and dry) of dough from whole wheat flour or extracted flour . It has three
separate testing for wet and dry gluten and gluten index; takes longer time for each test
3. Perten Falling Number 1500 Measures the alpha amylase activity in wheat (amount of sprouted grain
and thus of yeast enzyme activity) Sensitive and need proper attention

4. Single Kernel Characterization System (SKCS) hardness/softness classification; grain uniformity;
Moisture, diameter; weight ,Wheat and barley grains
5. Chopin CD1 laboratory mill Estimate milling characteristics (extraction rate, wheat behavior during
the milling process); simulates the main phases of an industrial mill; Up to 30 milling operations per
day without heating (tempering devices)
6. Bran finisher Optimize your test milling processes and get higher extraction rate (up to 5% more
flour); Retrieve important components from the outer edge of the grain (enzymes, minerals) miller

7. Chopin CD2 laboratory mill Gives representative semolina from durum wheat. All grain quality
facilities will be installed and the initial training were provided for NIR (Near infrared spectroscopy) or
grain analyzer and all miller type and other facilities will be installed in the future.

Milling of whole wheat for analysis (grounding of samples with up to 25% moisture
