BEACH BASED RESORTS-
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND
HOW IT CAN BE MANAGED
KRISHNA.B.KUNJUMON
INTRODUCTION
 Resort is a place that is frequented for holidays or
recreation or for a particular purpose
 Beach resort is located close to beaches or seashores is
being the prime focus of the tourist and are a Perfect
Weekend Gateways
 It offer activities including Para-sailing, snorkeling,
kayaking, boating and scuba diving.
 It offers a wide range of services and amenities and
typically includes entertainment and recreational
activities.
 As a self-contained establishment, a Beach Resort
provides for most of a vacationer's needs while
remaining on the premises (lodging, food, drink,
sports, entertainment, shopping, etc.)
 The benefits of booking a Beach Resort are :
a) Guest finds not only the proximity to the beach but
also an all-around service within the premises.
b) It is convenient for families, offering kids-club,
evening entertaining program, shopping etc.
 Top states that benefits from coastal tourism are:
I. California
II. Florida
III. New jersey
IV. Hawaii
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
 POSTIVE
 Identification and protection of endangered habitats
 Prohibition of environmentally harmful sports in
jeopardized regions
 Strategic Environmental Assessment procedures on
all tourism related projects and programs
 Major local and foreign exchange investment, capital
works investment construction and tourism job
creation, local opportunities
 Attract and develop a signature sustainable tourism
project to the site
 Marina development
 Improved zoning and building codes for
environmental protection and disaster reduction.
 New employment opportunities and economic
development for poverty stricken areas
 Coral reefs near to the beaches should require
special attention to sustain the land eco-system
 NEGATIVE
 Massive influxes of tourists, often to a relatively
small area, have a huge impact.
 Putting local infrastructure and habitats under
enormous pressure.
 The intensive use of water and land by tourism
and leisure facilities.
 The delivery and use of energy.
 Changes in the landscape coming from the
construction of infrastructure, buildings and
facilities.
 Pollution and waste.
 The compaction and sealing of soils (damage and
destruction of vegetation).
 The disturbance of fauna and local people (for
example, by noise).
 It destabilizes ecosystems and weakens their
ability to deal with natural disasters such as
floods, droughts, and hurricanes, and with
human-caused stresses, such as pollution and
climate change.
 Littering
 Aesthetic pollution
 It reduces the productivity of ecosystems,
thereby shrinking nature's basket of goods and
services, from which we constantly draw
HOW IT CAN BE MANAGED……?????
 Eco-label concept
Meeting quality standards relating to water
quality, safety, environmental management and
environment education.
 Water quality
Beaches meet water quality standards for
micro-biological and physical, chemical
parameters. No abnormal changes in colour of
the water
 Establish Beach management committee
There must be needed to establish and conducting
regular environmental audits of beach facility to help
and ensure that beach meets environment
management criteria
Eg: representative of local authority, local
businesses(beach manger, spokesperson, local
residents, hotel, etc)
 Apply coastal zone management principle
Operations of beach and its surroundings comply
with local and regional land use plans include dunes,
paths, parking areas and regulations regarding
environmental health
 Waste disposal bins/ receptacles must be
available by / on the beach in adequate
numbers, regularly maintained, emptied
Trash containers should have covers as well as
functional. The amount of maintenance and
emptying of containers will vary week to week
depending up on the volume of people on the beach
 Facilities for receiving recyclable waste
materials must be available on/ by the beach
Increasing number of communities encourage
recycling. Separate containers on the beach for glass,
cans, plastic and paper can help this effort
 Storm water outlets must be clean at all times
 Adequate and clean sanity facilities with
controlled sewage disposal
 Special consideration should given to the
cleanliness and condition of equipment.
Ideally environmentally sound products
will be used
Traffic congestion can be reduced through
such actions as encouraging the use of public
transportation and the use of bikes, designing
pedestrian streets, and developing circulation
plans that reduce peak traffic jams
 Examples:
1. In most Blue Flag beaches dogs and pets
are not allowed on the sandy part of
beaches, with the exception of guide for
blind people. If pets are allowed owners
must keep them on a leash and be
responsible for picking up droppings
2. Beaches in Florida encourages diving on
the beach as part of the attraction, such
activities are detrimental to the quality of
environment. In the event, cars are
allowed on the beach by keeping at least 65
feet away from water edge
 High safety, service and security
Determining appropriate number of
lifeguards and equipment requires a risk
assessment of beach
 Educating the users and community by
providing informations and additional
elements of safety strategies
 Accessibility of an emergency phone
It is recommended that equipments like
buoys, torpedo, hook, life rafts, life vests
should provide every 120 feet when no life
guards are present
 Inspection regarding management, equipments,
functioning must be inspected and maintained on
a regular basis
 A supply of portable drinking water should be
available on the beach
 A map of the beach indicating different facilities
must be displayed
A map showing the location of key facilities and
services should be posted showing the location of
lifeguards, life saving equipments, first-aid,
access point for disabled, zoning, drinking water,
telephone, toilets, foot paths etc
Marari beach resort
Cherayi beach resort
Kovalam beach resort
CONCLUSION
 Resort is a place that is frequented for
holidays or recreation or for a particular
purpose
 Beach resort is located close to beaches or
seashores is being the prime focus of the
tourist
 Thus proper measures should be taken care to
reduce the human interventions in the beach
resorts
