economy that are doing eligible R&D activities
can now register with AusIndustry to receive the
new R&D Tax Incentive.
The R&D Tax Incentive lets companies offset
their tax liabilities against expenses incurred in
undertaking research & development activities
when creating new products, processes and
services
7. More generous rates of assistance
• 45 per cent refundable tax offset for eligible entities
with an aggregated turnover of less than $20 million
– Quarterly credits system from 1 January 2014 for companies
eligible for the refundable tax offset
• 40 per cent non-refundable tax offset for all other
eligible entities
Increased certainty for R&D investment
• Decoupling from the corporate tax rate
• Advance findings
8. Expanded program access
• Allowing foreign companies with offshore IP access to the program
• Increase in allowable overseas R&D activities – requires an overseas
finding
Access to R&D expertise
• Research Service Providers (RSP) who have met certain eligibility
criteria
• Companies using services of a RSP do not need to meet the $20,000
expenditure threshold
Other
• If a company is owned 50% or more by a university, the company
may still be eligible for a 40% non-refundable offset
9. Eligible R&D activities are defined as either ‘core’ or
‘supporting’ R&D activities
• Core R&D activities requires that an experiment is
conducted using the scientific method in order to address a
significant knowledge gap
• Supporting R&D activities must be either directly related to
core R&D activities or in a production environment,
undertaken for the dominant purpose of supporting core R&D
activities
