Learning Experience at ACT
“Successful
teachers don’t
do different
things, they
just do things
differently”
..if I don’t lower the affective filters thereby
making my learners relaxed comfortable and
mentally ready for the class.
The very first day began with fun-filled warmers
rather than a formal introduction to TESOL which
taught me that no matter how much or what I teach
will not be effective…
The hilarious Setswana Activity
“dumellama… dumellara”
opened my eyes to the fact that
unless I put my feet in the shoes
of my learners I cannot teach
them a foreign language.
The “Context
Setting” plays a
very important
part in teaching
all levels of
learners where I
have to tap the
previous
knowledge and
experience of my
learners in order
to teach them
new concepts.
The use of audio visuals
and kinaesthetic aids
contribute in making the
new learning long
lasting
The core dialogues done through modelling by the teacher enables the students
to observe, hypothesize and experiment with language. Further the teacher to
student allows the learner to pick up the right expressions and pronunciation of
the words and phrases in the sentences. Finally the student to student process
provides ample room for peer interaction which is monitored by the teacher for
any errors.
The greatest joy comes when the
learners speak correctly and is
also able to write down a few
sentences in English after every
language session.
Teaching English to
speakers of other
languages also
taught us various
techniques to make
the learning
enjoyable
Games and music relieve stress
Theatre tools that break the monotony of teaching make the learners
more confident and enables them to work in a team giving birth to
patience, and creativity. All this helps in building a good rapport with
not only the teacher but also with students.
When You’ve mastered all
the methods
Penetrated all the ways
By which those who were
successful
Justified the claim to praise
Very precious the possession
Of the technique and the art
But you cannot substitute it
For a sympathetic heart.
Learning will be useless lumber
If it does not make you see
That the verb ‘to know’ is never
more important than ‘to be’
And take heed to what you say
For the pupils wiser far
Will be thinking while you say it
Of the kind of person you are!
Your teaching
is yourself
Thank you TESOL
