SHASTIR' Calligraphy art exhibition held at ACM's Red Ger Gallery

The Arts Council of Mongolia
(ACM) is a non-profit organization
with a goal to support sustainable
development of Mongoliaâs arts and
culture. ACM focuses on worldwide
promotion of Mongolian arts and
culture, increases the competitiveness
of arts and culture by nurturing artistic
excellence among arts and culture
organizations and artists, builds their
capacity, enhances international
collaboration, and promotes Mongolian
art and culture abroad and brings world
talent to Mongolia.
The ACMâs Red Ger Art Gallery
promotes high quality, innovative
and well-presented contemporary
art exhibitions of Mongolian and
international artists to the public.
On November 11-18, the Red Ger
Gallery is presenting the âShashtirâ
calligraphy exhibition by Nyam-
Ochir.O, a talented young artist and
calligrapher. This is his first solo
calligraphy exhibition and the opening
will be held at 11 am on November 11.
O.Nyam-Ochir came back with
plentyofgoodfortuneafterparticipating
in the category of modern calligraphy
in biannual events in Chongju, South
Korea and Beijing, China in September,
2017. He is displaying his exhibition of
artworks for this special blessed year.
Mongolian script is a Mongolian
cultural heritage that exemplifies
Mongolian mentality, way of living,
and philosophy. As such, this first
calligraphy exhibition is being held
with his sincere intention to turn
Shastirs (chronicles) and historical
works into artwork and inspire pride in
our cultural heritage â traditional script
â by popularizing the art of calligraphy
to the public and future generations.
The exhibition will be unique in
that it will feature ancient literary
masterpieces including the Altan
Tovch, the Khukh Sudar, the Secret
History of the Mongols, and Ganjuur,
adapted into modern art medium and
compiled under the title Shastir. These
works will be displayed along with
modern installation artworks featuring
Mongolian everyday life articles such
as livestock brands, dung baskets,
traditional chests, and khadag as well
as calligraphy works painted on linen.
The exhibition is open to the public,
scholars, artists who value Mongolian
script and culture, and those who like
to study, collect and revere Mongolian
script.

The Embassy of Canada in
Mongolia will proudly present
the âCrisDerksen Trioâwhich will
perform for Mongolian audiences
on November 9, 2017 at the
Ulaanbaatar Ensemble Concert
hall. The concert is being co-
organized by the Arts Council of
Mongolia (ACM).
Canadaâs 150th anniversary
of the Confederation is
being celebrated throughout
2017. As part of the festivities, the
Embassy is working to present
Canadaâs heritage, history and
culture to Mongolians. It is also the
Embassyâs hope to be able to share
its innovation in society, economy
and education. Most importantly,
the Embassy is proud to showcase
well-known Canadian artists for
Mongolian audiences and art
lovers.
Invited by the Embassy of
Canada the âCrisDerksen Trioâ
will only hold one concert for
the Mongolian audience. The
concert is being sponsored by
XAC bank of Mongolia, and
supported by the Canadian
Council for the Arts. The Arts
Council of Mongolia is taking the
lead in developing and organizing
the concept. The trio includes
the talents of Juno-nominated
cellist composer CrisDerksen,
acclaimed Anishinaabe Hoop
Dancer Nimkii Osawamick, and
award-winning drummer Morgan
Doctor. They will be collaborating
with the Ulaanbaatar Ensemble
musicians to showcase a fusion
of Canadian aboriginal music and
Mongolian traditional music with
contemporary electronic music
aiming to create a work that merges
musical styles and cultures in an
innovative way. As a result of the
collaborative performance, artists
from both countries will learn from
each other, and the Mongolian
audience will get to explore
Canadaâs aboriginal music, their
heritage and contemporary trends
of Canadaâs music industry.
During their stay in UB,
CrisDerksen will hold a master
class for Mongolian classical and
contemporary musicians.
TheACM is proudly partnering
with the Embassy of Canada in
Mongolia to present a unique
performance which includes the
richness and diversity of Canadian
aboriginal arts.

About CrisDerksen Trio
The CrisDerksen Trio
is renowned for its riveting
performances. The trio includes
the talents of Juno-nominated
cellist CrisDerksen, acclaimed
Anishinaabe Hoop Dancer
NimkiiOsawamick, and award-
winning drummer Morgan Doctor.
Cris Derksen Bio:
Award winning and Juno
nominated Canadian Aboriginal
cellist Cris Derksen is known
for building layers of sound
into captivating performances.
Her music braids the traditional
and contemporary in multiple
dimensions, weaving her classical
training and her aboriginal ancestry
with new school electronics,
creating genre defying music.
Originally from the North Tall
Cree reserve in northern Alberta,
Cris composes for film, television,
and dance, and tours nationally and
internationally, performing and
recording with an impressive array
of musicians, including recent
projects with Buffy Sainte Marie,
Tanya Tagaq, and Kinnie Starr.
Nimkii Osawamick Bio:
Nimkii Osawamick is an
Anishinaabe dance artist from the
Wikwemikong,Unceded Reserve
located in Manitoulin Island and is
a member of the Wolf Clan. Nimkii
has been dancing since the age of
three years old. Now an active
community member in powwow
circles, Nimkii is well-known as a
singer, hoop dancer, and champion
powwow dancer. He has travelled
extensively across North America
sharing his gift of singing and
dancing with the peoples of Turtle
Island.
Nimkii is dedicated to the
preservation and awareness of his
peopleâs culture and history which
is highlighted in his business
DNA STAGE: Dedicated Native
Awareness which helps bridge the
cultural gap between First Nations
people and inhabitants.
Morgan Doctor Bio:
Morgan Doctor is an
AmericanâCanadian musician
who is a solo artist, session player,
and private drum teacher living in
Toronto, Ontario. She has played
over a thousand dates all over the
US, Canada and Europe with such
artists as Andy Kim, The Cliks,
Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida,
Sandra Bernhard, Ron Sexsmith,
Alex Lifeson and Kevin Drew.
With over fifteen years
of recording and performing
experience, Morgan Doctor is a
kit player who has developed a
diverse repertoire of drumming
and percussion skills. In addition
to drum kit, she is classically
trained on the tables and plays an
array of percussion including such
obscure instruments as the Swiss
made Hang. Morganâs session
drumming has turned up on TV and
Film Soundtracks. In 2006 Morgan
signed with Aporia Records and
has released three solo albums with
them including latest album, Major
Over Minor, came out in 2013.
Morgan is endorsed by Vic
Firth, Yamaha Drums, Evans Drum
Heads dâaddario and Zildjian.
