Summon serves as a real digital front door for library collections. Available without authentication. Superior relevance across the most content with unbiased results, superior navigation
Ponad 840 milionów zasobów, ponad 90 typów zasobówThe Summon index has grown from just over 200 million items in 2009 to over 840 million items, across 90 different content types – mostly de-duplicated prior to indexing. Which means that we’ve indexed well over a billion items and we continue to index, new content and enter new publisher agreements all the time.

Talk about “true” relevancy ranking here …Because Summon provides unified results from a unified index, it is the only discovery product with true relevancy ranking. Relevancy means relevance across the full breadth of a library’s collection – not just part of the collection. This includes different content types, formats, subject indexing, full text, etc. Services that include federated, integrated, or blended search functionality simply cannot provide comprehensive relevancy.Importantly – our relevancy is NOT biased towards ANY content provider. And because results are returned from the entire collection in one results set, Summon also provides superior faceting and filtering to help users zoom in on relevant results. Subject, content type, date and location facets are applied across the entire result set. With just a few mouse clicks users really can navigate across the library’s entire collection. Our full text and peer review filters are powered by Ulrichs (also a SerSol product) data. Ulrichs is widely recognized as the authoritative source for what is and isn’t a full text or peer review source. We do not have to rely on vendor data, which is notoriously inaccurate, to know what is or isn’t full text or peer reviewed.
Algorytmy oceny relewancjiHere’s an oversimplification of a very sophisticated process managed by search experts… what I CAN say as a trainer is:Summon offers true relevance ranking across all 800 million-plus items in the Index, providing unbiased results regardless of content type or vendors. There’s two aspects of relevancy:Dynamic ranking – which means things like the Search term frequency in the record.Field weighting: terms appearing in certain fields have a higher relevancy weight than terms appearing in other fields.Term stemming: the base of a word is considered, not just the literal keyword by itself.Stop word processing: stop words are indexed, so a search on ‘To be or not to be’ will retrieve relevant Shakespeare content. And then there’s Static ranking - “Static” in the sense that this aspect isn’t related to the user’s query. Content type – for example, journals and books have a higher relevancy weight than format types such as book reviews and newspaper articlesPublication date – newer stuff gets higher relevancy weightUlrich’s Is-Scholarly designation – (Ulrich’s is global source for periodicals information). Journals with scholarly designation get higher weight.Local collection gets higher weightSummon also provides the user with up to two relevant resources as recommendations they might want to search in for furthering their research… we’ll see this when we look at the live demonstration.[additional info:]Dev team uses the Open Source search engine SOLR. SOLR is the search platform from the Apache Lucene project.
