Summary Progress Research Study Objective of the study Progress update 1. Policy Advocacy for Persons with Disability To determine the extent to which government institutions are addressing HIV/AIDS and disability within the context of national policies and programmes Working on feedback provided for the 1 st draft report. Abstract has been submitted to NOPE conference, Nairobi (June 16-18 2010) 2. Responsiveness of ART Services to the Needs of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya To assess the responsiveness of ARV/ART services to the needs of persons with disabilities in Kenya Data analysis ongoing. 3. HIV/AIDS Prevention among Deaf Youths in Nyanza and Western Kenya Provinces To establish the extent to which the Nyaweri deaf project has met its initial set objectives and to find out the level of impact created on the deaf communities in Nyanza and Western Provinces with regard to HIV/AIDS prevention, character formation and behavior change. 2 nd draft reports have been circulated

Research Study Objectives of the Study Progress update 4. The role of (DPOs) in HIV/ AIDS interventions among people with disabilities in Kenya To determine the role that DPOs play in interventions aimed at combating HIV/AIDS amongst people with disabilities. The study seeks to identify strengths, weaknesses and gaps that may inadvertently contribute to limited access to HIV/AIDS services by people with disabilities. 1 st draft report circulated 5. Access and Utilization of HIV&AIDS services by Persons with Intellectual disability and Care givers To explore the extent to which People with Intellectual Disabilities affected or infected with HIV&AIDS and their caregivers access and utilize services in Health Facilities, Institutions & Organizations for PWIDs and the capacity of service providers in these institutions to provide the required services. Feedback on 1 st draft completed 6. Situational analysis, mainstreaming HIV/AIDS and Life skills training and development for children with disabilities To analyze the current situation regarding life skills training and development to reduce the vulnerability of children with disabilities to HIV/AIDS among learners with disabilities. 60% of data collection complete and interviews with the children planned Study t 7. Addressing the Balance of Burden in HIV/AIDS in PWDs in Ethiopia To expand the evidence base about the social, economic and institutional factors that place the livelihoods of Persons with Disabilities at increased threat from HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. ,[object Object],[object Object]

The general population HIV prevalence stands at 5.1%(THMIS 2011/12) down from 18% in 1990. HIV and STIs prevalence are also high among KP's, HIV is 31.4% while other STI has an average of 26% prevalence. The number of KP's is not known, although there are fledgling groups of KP's which have started advocating for the Right to Health of KP's including protection against HIV infection, care and treatment to PLHIV KP's.

Electronic health (e-health) is an emerging research field that focuses on healthcare based in emerging information and communication technologies. Researchers on e-health have been working on database management systems to store and retrieve electronically the health records, conducting e-referral of the patients, e-transferring of the patient information and helping several other sectors of a hospital management system (e.g. finance, pharmacy, etc.). The presentation will overview the problem of e-Health strategies, emphasizing key principles that decision - makers should follow, so that the selection of activities, technologies and applications for e-health respond to national and international health priorities in the most efficient manner. Evidence – based suicidal scenarios are analyzed using statistical modeling to mine knowledge. Finally the performance of the DSS will be test on some test data.

HIV and AIDS still remains the greatest public health challenge globally (Strauss and Thomas, 2008). It is undoubtedly a major cause of premature deaths in many parts of the world with the poorest regions being the most affected. The lack of an imminent cure or vaccine means that more deaths and large disease burden are inevitable (WHO, 2001). By the end of 2010, approximately 34 million people globally were living with HIV infection. In the same year, nearly 2.7 million new infections including slightly over 300,000 among children and 1.8 million AIDS related deaths occurred (UNAIDS, 2010).

The health of mothers, newborns and children – the subjects of two Millennium Development Goals – are central to any country’s overall well-being. However, recent estimates show many African countries are facing obstacles in achieving these health targets for their most vulnerable populations. This is largely because Africa is enduring human resources for health (HRH) crisis, with most countries in the region lacking sufficient personnel to deliver basic health care to their populations, especially in rural areas. The capacity of the region to respond to this crisis is severely constrained by inadequate funds and infrastructure. Effective planning for and management of the scarce HRH available, particularly pertaining to maternal, newborn and child health, are thus of paramount importance to Africa’s governments. To inform such planning, a systematic review of available evidence on training and deployment policies for doctors, nurses and midwives for maternal-child health in rural Africa was completed, and is described in this presentation. With 15 percent of the world's population living with some form of disability, this Technical Learning Sessions discussed how MSH's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) priorities cannot be realized without inclusion and specifically how the LMG Project has engaged in this space. Topics explored: the need for inclusive development, how to consider inclusion throughout the project cycle, and practical resources to use in your current work, regardless of the health area or building block you focus on.
