2. Air pollution is the introduction into
the atmosphere chemicals, particulates, or biological materials
that cause discomfort, disease, or death to humans, damage
other living organisms such as food crops, or damage
the natural environment or built environment.
3. Types of pollutants
Primary pollutants
Pollutants that are
emitted directly
from identifiable
sources –
produced by both
natural events or
human activities
Eg. Dust
storms, emission
from vehicles
Secondary
pollutants
When certain
chemical
reactions take
place among the
primary
pollutants
Eg. Sulphuric acid
4. A substance in the air that can
cause harm to humans and the
environment is known as an air
pollutant. Pollutants can be in the
form of solid particles, liquid
droplets, or gases. In addition, they
may be natural or man-made.
5. Most dangerous indoor air
pollutants
Cigarette smoke
formaldehyde
radioactive radon 222 gas
asbestos
Others include: bacteria, fungi, dusts
and other
particulates, pollen, CO2, CO, O3, NO
x, SO2, building materials such as
fiberglass, etc.
6. Sulphur oxides
Nitrogen oxides
It is produced by
volcanoes and in
various industrial
processes.
They are emitted from
high temperature
combustion, and are
also produced naturally
during thunderstorms
by electrical discharge.
Carbon monoxide
It is a
colorless, odorless, nonirritating but very poisonous
gas. It is a product
by incomplete combustion of
fuel such as natural gas, coal
or wood. Vehicular exhaust is
a major source of carbon
monoxide.
7. Cause of air pollution
1.The main cause of air pollution is manufacturing. This
source of pollution spews particulate matter and
chemicals into the atmosphere. Factories realese exhaust
into the environment, including: sulfur oxides, nitrogen
oxides, carbon monoxide and dioxide, etc...
8. 2.The second reason is natural process. The Earth itself
contributes to air pollution through volcanic
eruptions, wildfires, and other natural process, but it is
capable of recovering from those sources.
9. 3.Smoking and dust
from second-hand or old
means of transports
pollute the atmosphere
of big cities.
10. Health effects
Air pollution is a significant risk factor for multiple health conditions
including respiratory infections, heart disease, and lung cancer,
according to the WHO. The health effects caused by air pollution may
include difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, asthma and
aggravation of existing respiratory.
Effects On Children
Cities around the world with high exposure to air pollutants have
the possibility of children living within them to develop
asthma, pneumonia and other lower respiratory infections as well
as a low initial birth rate
11. The World Health Organization states that 2.4 million people die each
year
from causes directly attributable to air pollution, with 1.5 million of
these
deaths attributable to indoor air pollution
12. Solutions.
Use mass transit
Walk or bike
Use less polluting fuels
Improve fuel efficiency
Get older, polluting cars off the road
Give large tax write- offs or rebates for
buying low-polluting, energy efficient
vehicles
