1. Poseidon and Athena
Scene 1
Man 1: Everybody listen!
Man 2: Everybody listen!
Man 1: People of the city! The two gods, Poseidon and Athena want to
speak to us.
Man 2: They are asking all of us to go to the Hill of the Acropolis because
there is something very important they want to tell us!
Man 1: Come on everybody! We mustn’t delay! We have to show
respect to our gods! Men, women and children, hurry up! The two gods
are waiting for us!
Scene 2, on the Acropolis.
Woman 1: Hey there! What’s happening? Have you got any idea?
Woman 2: No! I don’t have a clue!
Woman 3: I heard that the great Poseidon and the wise Athena want to
talk to us, but I don’t know why.
Man 3: I heard that both of them are claiming our city. They both want
to give our city their name and be our protectors!
Man 4: Really? What a great honour! They are both powerful gods and
we will be lucky to have them by our side!
Woman 4: Be quiet now! They are coming!

2. Scene 3, Poseidon and Athena are coming
Poseidon: People of this city! You all know me! I am Poseidon, the
master of the sea. I am powerful and all the creatures of the sea belong
to me! I rule the oceans, and I am the one who can help you travel with
your ships all over the world, conquer other countries and take their
treasures! With my trident I can cause huge waves and sink even the
biggest ships! I am the god who protects your sailors and brings them
back safe! Look what I can do! (He hits the rock with his trident and a
spring appears) I can hit the rock with my trident and a spring of water
appears! I am giving you this spring as a present. Choose me as your
protector!
Man 5: Yes, yes, you must be our protector! We need you great
Poseidon!
Man 6: What a wonderful spring!
Man 7: Thank you our god for your gift!
Woman 5: Thank you Poseidon! We are glad to have you here.
Woman 6: Wait! Athena hasn’t spoken yet! Let’s listen to her first and
then we can decide!
Athena: You know me, people! I am Athena, the goddess of war and
wisdom. I like your city very much! Look! It is located in the most
beautiful area! The weather is mild here, the soil is fertile and you can
grow anything you like! You are very lucky to be living in this place and if
you choose me as your protector I will help you create a powerful city
which everybody will admire. Now accept my present, this olive tree.
You can eat the olives, but you can also take from it the precious olive
oil, which you can use to cook your food and light your lanterns. Choose
me, and with my gift you will never be hungry.

3. Woman 7: Athena’s present is better. Olive trees are precious and
necessary for our life.
Man 8: And don’t forget that we need the olive oil which is so good for
our health!
Man 9: I think Poseidon’s gift is better. We will become richer if we have
him by our side!
Man 10: No! The water that comes from his spring is salty! What do we
need it for? We can’t drink it and we can’t water our plants! Poseidon is
the god of the seas, and we live on the land!
Woman 8: He is right! We live on the land, we are farmers and we grow
fruits and vegetables to feed our families. The olive trees will save us
from hunger! Athena must be our protector and give her name to the
city.
Woman 9: Yes! Athena will be our protector from now on, and our city
will be named after her! From now on this city will be called Athens and
goddess Athena will be honoured by us and our children.
Woman 10: We will build a temple on this hill and its name will be
Parthenon, and it will be devoted to goddess Athena, our protector.
With the help of Athena, our city will become strong and famous for
many many years.
