The ocean
1. The Ocean: Life and Death
Joshua Mendez, Melvin Sharma, and Zachary Wade

6th grade
Science
4/3/12
2. What does it look like?
A large body of salty water
A major part of the hydrosphere
71% of the Earth is salt water decomposer
Over two million species of animals such as
herbivores, omnivores, scavengers, decomposers,
and carnivores
omnivore carnivore herbivore scavenger
3. Producers In the Ocean
Producers are organisms that can compose their
own food.
Use photosynthesis create energy
Examples are:
Algae
Phytoplankton
4. Algae
A large group of non-flowering plants
Contains chlorophyll
Lacks stems, roots, and leaves
Has no vascular tissues
Aren't planted into the ground
Found on trees and other plants in water
Has no vascular system
One of the oldest plants in the world
6. Ocean Consumers
Consumers are organisms that contain energy by
feeding on other organisms.
There are different types of consumers , Primary
and secondary
Examples are:
Green Sea Turtles-PRIMARY and/or
SECONDARY
Manatees-PRIMARY and/or SECONDARY
Great White Shark-SECONDARY and/or
THIRD
Orca Whales-SECONDARY and/or THIRD
Krill-PRIMARY
7. 1st Consumers
Krill is a shrimp-like plankton
It is a cannibal because it eats phytoplankton
Is a crustacean
Krill is a herbivores
A common known pray
A primary consumer
8. 1st & 2nd Consumers
Green Sea Turtles are salt water reptiles.
They have a creamy white belly
The algae they eat makes them look green colored.
Eat sea grasses and algae.
They are omnivores.
9. 1st & 2nd Consumers (cont.)
Manatees are big aquatic gray mammals that are
very kind and gentle.
They are herbivores.
They have 4 nails and rounded tail flippers
They eat algae and sea grass
They adapt from freshwater to saltwater
10. 2nd & 3rd Consumers
Orca whales (killer whales) are tooth whales that
prefer to eat mammals instead of fish.
Favorite foods are manatee, green sea turtles,
seals, and walruses.
They hunt in groups
They are carnivores
Scared of humans
11. Ocean Decomposers
Decomposers are organisms that break down waste
and other dead organisms.
If they’re weren’t any decomposers, the water
minerals and other raw material will run low in the
ecosystem.
If these materials weren’t replaced, organisms will
not be able to grow.
Some examples are:
Brittle Stars
Sea Slugs
12. Brittle Stars
Brittle stars (serpent stars) are decomposers
Spiny, hard-skin, long-armed
Look hairy, but are poky
They are invertebrate and as five snake-like arms
Hide under rocks
Move by swaying their arms
They are also nocturnal
Its amputated arms regenerate when cut off
Have no brain or anus
Have five teeth
13. Sea Slugs
Sea slugs have numbers of defense mechanisms.
They have warning coloring bright colored
Snails with no shell
Have tentacles that are sensitive to touch, smell,
and taste
They are called nudibranches
Many feathery extensions on many parts of their
body
Grow up to be 60cm. from 0.4cm.
They are both males and female
