2. The internet would be a totally di erent place if there was no Google. The search engine giant has revolutionized the way we
use the internet. And with its new uncon rmed Search Engine Update Fred, Il explain how to be on Google’s side.
Big impact
We are in a time where fake news has dominated the conversation. ‘Fred’ is just one example of how
misinformation published on the web and social media can create a domino e ect of reactions. Even
the Washington Post commented that the SEO community is ‘freaking out’ and calling for all
companies, whose websites are an important part of their lead generation and branding, to start
using SEO services and employ SEO consultants in order not to get caught out in any more Google
updates.
With more than 60% of search being facilitated by Google, you have to understand that it is a force to reckon with. An online
business cannot survive without being Google friendly. Why is this? Why do you need to be Google friendly? Let us nd out.
Figure – Google Searches Over the years.
How updates have shaped Google in past
Right from the inception, Google strives to provide the most relevant and popular content to the people. Over the years,
technology has developed and it has allowed Google to understand how people search. With better understanding, Google
has launched updates to its search engine algorithm from time to time.
You must have heard about Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird and now Fred. Fred is the current uncon rmed algorithm
update by Google to deliver search results and it has been just launched in 2017. Every time Google launches a new update,
many sites go completely obsolete. It is because of Google penalty which is levied on the sites that violate Google’s
guidelines.
3. Figure – Panda, Penguin Hummingbird Updates
Now, let us understand it using an example:
4. In February 2011, Google rolled out Panda. This was a major update as more emphasis was laid on ‘high-quality sites’ and
‘low-quality sites’ were devalued. This meant that sites with more advertising and less content and with links to spammy
websites were devalued, even if they had the relevant keywords.
So, suppose you had a website dealing with wedding photography. However, your site had more ads than content and many
backlinks to your site were from low-quality blogs and link directories. In this case, after February 2011, your site would see a
drop in its rankings, even though the relevant keywords were present in your site.
So, in simple words, having keywords in your site could no longer guarantee a high ranking.
Another turn of events that have had a big impact on the search results was the introduction of Google mobile friendliness.
In a post on Feb 2015, Google stated that
“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will a ect mobile searches in
all languages worldwide and will have a signi cant impact on our search results.”
Now, according to this update, the sites which are not mobile friendly will be ranked lower on Google.
I hope you get an idea of what I am talking about. Simply put, I can summarize this by saying that your site/blog rankings are
dependent on how Google-friendly you are, and this applies to both the SEO of your site and the type of content you
publish.
Now let’s look at What’s Fred got new to this search engine?
Now Fred was an Uncon rmed Google SEO update. Meaning that they wanted to catch people with surprise. We’ve seen
more chatter and reports of changes from within the “black hat” SEO community, which generally means that this is a spam
algorithm update around links. Last time a link on the spam-related update was shared in early February, and that update
also was uncon rmed by Google.
5. There was also a large content quality Google update on February 7 that was never con rmed. As you expect, Google is
very unlikely to con rm algorithm updates these days — but that won’t stop us from reporting large shifts in the search
results that convey an algorithm update has happened.
Many of the automated tracking tools currently show signi cant volatility and uctuations, which is an indicator of an
update. Plus, with all the industry chatter, and with webmasters both complaining about ranking declines and rejoicing
about ranking increases, it’s likely that there was a Google update.
These are the three things Fred has brought to the table:
1. Abolishing Black hat linking
2. Repeated Stress on Quality content
3. Checking for Relevant backlinking
Becoming Google friendly: Get twice the growth by being Google Fred
compliant
Now we know that defying Google is a bad idea. So, what do you need to do? How do you make sure that your site is Google
friendly? For understanding that, let us rst get an idea of how search engines work.
Figure – How Search Engines work
There are billions of web pages in the world. A search engine deploys robots known as ‘crawlers’ or ‘spiders’ to work their way
through the massive web of links and index each page.
In simple terms, each web page is a station that the crawlers need to visit and they use links as their mode of transport. Once
these crawlers are on the page, they decipher the data from the source code of the page and save it in the large data centers
maintained by the search engine companies.
6. The stored data is used to show results when the user searches using a speci c query. The search engine rankings
depend upon the popularity of the site and the relevance to the keywords searched.
Now, relevance is based on the content of the site. If your site deals with content marketing and services, then the
content published on your site would be talking about content marketing and allied topics. So, when a person searches for
content marketing, your site is one of those which are selected by Google for display.
However, it is the next step that is more important. If you look closely, there are 7,10,00,000 results that are given by Google.
Now, since your website is based on content marketing services, it is bound to be one of the 50 million plus results. But
what matters is the fact that what rank does your page get.
As much as 90% of the people never go past the rst page of the search. This is why you need to be on the rst page.
And to be on the rst page, you need to be popular.
I will skip telling you what popular means. Let’s get down to business and understand how your website can be termed as
‘popular’ by Google.
8. You must have probably heard it many times, ‘content is king’. No matter how many updates are launched, content will
always be a top priority for Google. A site lled with relevant, plagiarism free and valuable content will always have an edge
over the competitors.
So, your rst task will be to create content that contains some value for the readers. Proper use of keywords and long tailed
keywords are essential, but make sure that you do not overstu your content with them. Also, creating good content
automatically helps in alleviating your rankings as the people themselves interact with your content.
Backlinks
Backlinks are the second most important factors. A great content is only worth when people know about it. Backlinks
provide you with the way to create a network wherein your content is linked to by many other relevant and authoritative
websites.
Please be clear that low-quality backlinks will lower your popularity, so it is advised to understand backlinking and develop a
good link pro le. A good link pro le can be built by reaching out fellow bloggers, building high-quality content as mentioned
above so that people themselves share your work and by in uencer marketing.
Beginner’s Guide to Backlinking
Social Shares
Social metrics are being used by Google ever since the Hummingbird. These shares tell Google that a content is popular
among the people in social media. Using this metric, Google is able to understand which website is the most popular and
rank it high in their search results.
Again, you can clearly see a correlation between these factors. Social shares will depend on how good your content is. Also,
in uencer marketing, as mentioned in the above point, can also be a driving force behind social shares.
Mobile Friendly
As mentioned above, Google has started giving more importance to mobile friendly websites. It is mainly because the
mobile search tra c is increasing day by day.
With more smartphone users expected in the coming years, you can easily understand that Google will focus more on
mobile tra c.
9.
In order to avoid this issue, build your site using responsive web design templates. This will allow your websites to adapt to
the screen size automatically, making them mobile-friendly.
Apart from these, there are many other SEO techniques which are to be taken care of. It is advised to use the assistance of
some professional SEO experts in order to ensure that your website is SEO friendly. In the content department, you can
deploy the points mentioned above and make sure that your site remains Google friendly.
After all, it never hurts to have a friend!!!
