Exactly what problem is being solved (value propo-
sition)?
The FootieMate Digital Platform aims to create the perfect web
system for soccer players, teams, camps and leagues. It’s a fully
hosted, fully featured, affordable, easy-to-maintain and profes-
sional digital system. We consider it as a system because the so-
cial web, PC based and mobile web, and future devices (tab-
lets) all need to work together to create a smart digital strategy.
Value for money
The limited web/digital budgets are being wasted on the wrong
things. For example: Archaic and one off custom platforms and
technology, that can’t scale or embrace new formats like Mo-
bile.
Sport marketing approach to users
Overall the quality of logos, UX, visual and information design,
and branding is of low quality. In my experience its because
the bar is so low in sports. Mainly due to the predominate role of
marketing in the industry, and sports marketing has many design
crimes to pay for.
Lack of expertise
Soccer Coaches and typical club back office staff are not the
best people to be creating requirements for a clubs digital strat-
egy. It’s not their expertise, and its luck (lots of volunteering) if a
team ends up with a half decent site or plan.
Repetition
Every player, team and club has the same needs. Coaches I’ve
spoken to are screaming out for the right solution.
It’s about time
Amateur soccer wouldn’t exist without the concept of commu-
nity. Tons of hours are dedicated every week to helping people
play. Since the early days of the web this category has been
largely ignored, or the only option has been through get-rich-
quick style solutions.
For whom do we solve that problem (target market/
segment/persona)?
Any soccer team, coach or soccer related business owner that
has a limited budget, requires a smart digital strategy, needs to
recruit and register new players, and wants to get the most from
digital media.
How big is the opportunity (market size)?
Soccer is in need of a complete digital strategy. There are mil-
lions of kids, teenagers, adults and older men and women par-
ticipating in player soccer across the world, and my goal is cre-
ate a digital strategy, tools and a community to make it even
esier to play.

Market Requirements Document
“The 300,000 soccer clubs worldwide are com-
prised of 240 million players, 30 million of which
are women”
Luring more athletes to play soccer the answer?
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=670368&sec=u
s&root=us&cc=5901
“300 million people and 3.9 million registered
youth players”
How will we measure success (metrics/revenue
strategy/business/model)?
Numbers
Number of players, teams, clubs, leagues and associations that
sign-up for the service.
Revenue Model
There will be minimal revenue until the numbers of players, clubs
and leagues reaches a high enough number to warrant it. The
overall spirit of the idea needs to take hold, and a community
of soccer players and developers need to work through a defi-
nition phase before it becomes a real source of revenue. In the
spirit of an open community I think it’s the right move to be rela-
tively public and transparent about the costs to build and up-
keep the system. In many ways thats part of the appeal - with
the lack of digital expertise in sports too many clubs are spend-
ing what little money they have on the wrong solutions/things.
All of the following are real possibilities, it’s a just a matter of
when is the right time to activate them.
Ad Network
Create an ad network with a very specific demographic. The
design and layout of the site will focus include IAB placements
to serve FootieMate owned ads and sponsorships.
The right ‘exclusive’ sponsor
Exclusive sponsorship. One core sponsor (Nike, Toyota etc.) that
fits the platform buys the entire platform. I don’t think an ‘ad-
free’ version of the site is a good idea because its kills the op-
portunity to do an exclusive sponsorship deal.
Affilate marketing
There are a ton of opportunities to create useful and contextu-
ally relevant features that link out to relevant partners.
Subscription model
Theres an immediate layer of ‘free’ required because over the
next twelve months we need as many players and teams to
sign up as possible. Subscription model comes in when the next
layer of tools and services for all users are launched in the sys-
tem. Thinking very much like the approach of Linkedin.

What alternative are out there now (competitive
landscape)?
Facebook (Groups)
http://www. facebook.com
Many teams still want their own web site, and want to incor-
porate team sponsorship and branding. Players don’t want
coaches, parents and soccer friends mixing with their day-to-
day friends and activities. Features are not specifically aligned
to the day-to-day aspects of soccer. Ultimately there needs to
be a Facebook solution for a club using FootieMate, and might
need to be something we create for launch.
Active Network
http://www.activesports.com
Possibly the biggest competitor. They’ve been around for
awhile, and their experience has gotten them good partner-
ships with many organizations (AYSO). Not that their site gives a
strong indication of their work, but I sensing that UX and design
are not the top of the list with their solution.
Theme-ing. Compare the way Twitter allows a user to theme a
site, in contrast to the older ways of doing that. Users don’t mind
working with a template, as long as its the right template and
there’s a level of flexibility. Users can spend minutes or hours de-
signing their theme on Twitter.
Their platform feels dated and is not constructed on a social or
mobile platform, and I’m sure the costs of making that happen
are not cheap. Their lack of specificity (Multiple sports) with soc-
cer means theres a layer of features that probably don’t exist.
Although they are focused on many of the right features (regis-
tration, donations etc.)
There’s absolutely no sense of community with how this was de-
veloped or run, it’s just a service. I want FootieMate to more like
Pandora. It’s empowering people to play soccer (Watch less,
play more - is a dream I want to see happen).
Club Website UK
http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/
A solid competitor, that’s soccer only. Based in the UK and has
been around for awhile. They’ve managed to offer free sites
with ads. I was concerned about their offering until I looked at
their demo sites. They are truly terrible. They feel like first genera-
tion web sites that are not built on a social and mobile platform.
There approach predates Twitter, WordPress, tumblr etc. The UX
and design of the FootieMate system will be significantly easier
to create, will look more professional, and won’t have features
that require clubs to spend a significant amount of time to run/
operate. They are a little bit more focused on their efforts to em-
power the overall community.
SquareSpace
http://www.squarespace.com
I like this entire concept and figure they were mentioning. Low

cost and custom design with a very tech/social savvy strategy.
Mobile formats, social are all the right features that people in
the know require, and that first generation sites don’t have. Big-
gest issue is that they are not specific enough to soccer to have
the right features etc., and being a solution for all limits their
ability to form a community within an industry or category.
My Football Club
http://www.myfootballclub.co.uk
Different kind of business. But I want the sense of community
that these guys have. This is the best soccer idea on the inter-
net.
ScoreYard
http://www.scoreyard.com
Using player registration upfront to organize your team. Unclear
on the details about this one. Not much to see on their site, but
feeling like broad sports focus.
Fubles
http://www.fubles.com
European and only mobile led solution. Good to compare how
they immediately use Facebook connect to sign up. They are
focused on multiple sports, and it feels like its not necessarily offi-
cial team based leagues, more aligned to pickup soccer (Play -
now - right here). I consider this to be just one feature. Definitely
one I would like, but I want to be more focused on organized
clubs, and leagues. I’m confident that all of the organizational
aspects of running a team (admin workflow) are better handled
through a PC on the web then through a phone.
Demosphere

E7SPORTS
http://www.e7sports.com/
Blue Sombrero
http://www.bluesombrero.com/
Why are we best suited to pursue this (differentia-
tor)?
We’re soccer players whose day jobs are designing and build-
ing web sites. We’ve worked closely with soccer teams to get
a good understanding of what coaches and players need
from a web site. We also know that managing a soccer team
off the field is a ton of work, and the right digital tools will result
in a coach spending less time behind a desk, and more time
coaching. My own personal bio might be relevant here.
Why now (market window)?
Mobile & Social - Watching, participating, organizing and learn-
ing about soccer has taken on a whole new meaning with all of
the new social and mobile features that all ages are using. Am-
ateur soccer can now have a LIVE component with the geo-
graphically aware participants, and ease of creating and pub-
lishing content. Mobile and social might be the only web format
that kids around the world experience (PC is what dad uses for
work).

Worth mentioning that registration, player roster/squad management, schedule (check-in, game page, scoring & schedule page
are the primary reasons why clubs will have an interest in the system. Having the ability to sign-up, create a site and the below fea-
tures are what’s needed for launch. They also need to work on mobile (However, we can scale back on some of those features).
A) High-level tasks:
•	The sign-up/registration process on FootieMate.com
•	Create a profile with a photo, bio, location, add their social services, and contact information
•	They should be able to create a site in minutes (Registration flow will reflect that)
•	Once signed up a club admin should be able to add a full squad of players and schedule to activate the player/coach dash-
baords
•	FootieMate ads that are embedded within every template need to be operational (Google ads for the short term)
Questionable for launch:
• Signing up via mobile
• Teams should be able to make payments to FootieMate for general services. Could be just Paypal.
• Perhaps for launch we focus on player, team and clubs (multiple teams). Leagues and associations come later
B) Transition from your current site
•	Clubs should have multiple options for a new site. They can create a new FootieMate URL, continue with their old host, or work
with a preferred partner for a new hosted site with their own domain name. We should get a referral fee.
•	They should have the ability to create news blog posts, add schedule, and copy and paste as much content as required from
their old site
C) Design & Themeing

Footiemate.com (sign-up + club) launch plan
•	They should have the ability to change the color scheme/style of their site and add an image at the top of the page
•	They should be able to contact us to create new logos + header imagery as a paid service.
•	They can upload a new header image
•	Make sure to include image sizes for mobile
Questionable for launch:
•	Theme gallery. A team should be able to browse design themes (same theme, just color options), and can select one and thats
the style for their site (They add their logo + header imagery)
•	An image gallery for header imagery. A team should be able to browse header imagery, and can select one for their site (They
can download and add their logo, then upload to their site)
D) Team/Club Public Site - Core Features
•	I’ve looked through the features from page 21 and 22 for a team site (T1.0 - T15.0) and I’m not sure if anything can be eliminat-
ed for launch? All considered integral to getting a team excited enough to sign-up.
E) Team Dashboard - Core Features
•	Launch: D1.0, D2.0, D3.0, D4.0, D6.0, D7.0, D8.0, D9.0, D11.0, D12.0, D.15, D16.0, D.17, D.18, D.19
Questionable for launch:
•	D5.0 - A player or coach has the ability to create a separate (player, coach) site thats independent of their existing club one.
We could just have a link back to FootieMate.com to create a normal player/coach site. What would be ideal is that the player
personal/bio info could be imported into that work-flow. The player may choose to set a different status (Wants to leave their cur-
rent team without them knowing).
•	D10.0 - Coaches Journal

•	D13.0 - Formation Wizard. Would love to get this in initial release because its a great example of a coaching tool. Could also be
a good paid feature prototype.
•	D14.0 - Fitness/Coaching Wizard
•	D20.0 - Book of skills
•	D21.0 - Videos & Photos
•	D22.0 - Personal homepage settings. Not sure if we can live without these options? Perhaps its a more restricted list

PRIMARY USER PROFILES
There are four main user groups that will have a vaslightly different content and features. They are:
Coaches - Think of Coaches as a layer of content and activity that sits above the schedule and
player information. He needs tools to manage the day-to-day management of the team, and tools
that specifically help his players and staff.
Players - We need players to feel that FootieMate is credible and best place to be if they are serious
about soccer. At a minimum they can have their own personal site, or if they are playing for a club
they need to use the dashboard and tools. Many players will only utilize the mobile version of the
system (Where, what, when etc.). At a minimum we need their basic information (name, contact
and social) to have a dashboard.
Back Office - The organizational right-hand-man of the coach. They run the site. Add/delete pages.
Add/delete/update profiles. Work with sponsors. Coordinate the calendar. Deal with registration
and finance.
Parents/Fans - For kids teams the parents will be the main voice of the (kids) players. They also have
access to spectator style tools that help them report and capture information and stories about
games.

KEY FLOWS
1. High-level view of the overall system.
2. Soccer players across all demographics and geographies are the key target for
the entire FootieMate Digital System. We are creating tools that enable them to play
more often, easily meet other players, find teams and leagues, put themselves in the
shop window for other teams, and to improve there skills and fitness. What inhibits
players abilities from playing comes down to organization and communication. Soc-
cer players are the most important aspect of the entire system. Our tools will fill the
void.
3. The season schedule content and functionality is the most important feature on
the site. It’s the cornerstone of contextual relevance for a player, coach, back office,
parent etc. It’s the reason they will come to the site, and will define the navigation,
features, tools and layout of the site.

KEY FLOWS: 1. SYSTEM FLOW
FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues

PAGE
This should give a clearer picture of how the flow of sites across
the system work together. There are several kinds of content
(Schedules, scores, roster etc.) that have a role across everything.
The cordination of managing all of these sites is a challenge. I’m
not sure if complicated CMS workflows, too many configurations,
or settings will be tolerable for this user group. It needs to be super
easy to set up and manage on a day-to-day basis.
SYSTEM FLOW
FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
KEY FLOWS: 2. PLAYERS
FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues

PAGE
• By targeting clubs (multiple teams, boys and girls, men and
women) we could end up with 75 to 350 players for just one club.
• Players can sign up for their own none club related page. Per-
haps they want to use the page in order to get a slot on the best
club in a league
• When a club creates a new season they MUST add every mem-
ber of the squad into the system. At a minimum its name, address,
email, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. The flows here demon-
strate just how important that data is for the overall effectiveness
of the system.
• Players don’t have to have a public facing player page. They
are presented that option when they login into their clubs dash-
board page. That one dashboard manages their public page.
• Some players could play on multiple teams and may only
need one personal page.
• When a coach is creating a team site for a club they might
decide to not include player pages (for every player or just for
some). They still need the player data so the player data (and
utility for the player) can be used in the dashboard.
PLAYERS FLOW
FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
KEY FLOWS: 3. season schedule
FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues

PAGE
• Each season could be used as the pay mode for the site. Per-
haps theres a mode for the off-season or theres a camps mode
(changes the site navigation, functionality etc.).
• Should understand if its possible to hook in any Facebook,
Google calendar or other method of creating or viewing events
• The schedule defines the business for a club. The number one
business goal for any soccer school and camp is to get x amount
of players registered as soon as possible for their teams. With that
out of the way they can focus on practice and games.
• The system needs to switch seasonally. We should archive each
season (including content) by switching years.
• The first two things a club needs to do when they create a site
is to create the schedule for the system and enter the squad
information.
• Players and coaches will have the ability to check-in for a
game. This feature is to solve for the guess work of who’s going
to make it to practice and games. Coaches will have a ‘Who’s
checked-In view’ so they can quickly see if they have enough
people.
• Each game will have a page dedicated to it. It will pull in all
of the content for that game. The content comes from all of the
user groups in the form of Tweets, video (YouTube), SMS, blog

posts, FB posts.
• Build data over the course of multiple seasons. Rosters, scores,
league position, performance against teams etc. will be interest-
ing data points to compare in future seasons. For example: Team
A has beaten Team B 6 times over the past 4 seasons.

player HOMEPAGE
This site should mostly run on autopilot. Its should be a minimal amount of effort for a
player to create, and should not be considered a replacement for a players Face-
Book page. It’s goal is to be a players public soccer profile. They will use it as a refer-
ence to prospective coaches and (soccer) friends. It’s not a typical WordPress blog.
Players will be locked out of many of the typical WordPress Admin features. Can’t
change categories, themes etc. But if a player wants to use it as their primary blog, it
allows for posting. I see this as a free page for anyone to create. Ultimately this player
directory could live as a directory off of the main FootieMate.com site. (Same could
be said for a club directory). Should mention that a basic level of themeing and color
schemes will happen here. Not too different than Twitter, but more limitin

Promotional text (with logo) for FootieMate. Needs to be managed through
some kind of FootieMate Super Admin (Across all Club, player etc. sites)
My Club Login. The link to the Team dashboard for the players team/club.
My Login. One graphic. Need several sizes as it goes across Mobile etc. Should
include a default if nothing is uploaded. Could also include a sponsor within
the same graphic. Should be very easy for admin to upload/swap images.
FootieMate Player Card. Title for the site/page. Is the better SEO value in Foot-
ieMate + player name?
Player profile/bio information. Basic information based off of registration data
(Name, Nickname, Location, Position). The status copy is an option for the
player to switch given the soccer status (Injured, available, current club name,
on vacation, retired etc.). Should also consider coach profile. There is also
room for a headshot for the player. Should include a default if nothing is up-

filled with Google ads.
Navigation. There will be a default site navigation when the site rolls out.

contacted. Privacy and security is a concern.
	 - Bio. Short player bio. Could include a timeline later.

Weather. Added: Link to Club homepage. Again, this doesn’t have to be a
FootieMate club.
FootieMate Rating. Acts just like a poll. Teammates can rate you as a Footie-
Mate player. That criteria gets explained on FootieMate.com when users click
the ‘Explanation’ link.
Soccer Reel. This a combination of media that a player assembles to best rep-
resent their soccer skills/career/resume. The actual content is pulled from social
media and content sites. What’s presented here is a combination of YouTube
videos and Flickr photos. Its assumed the player knows how to upload content,
create accounts and embed that content into the FootieMate system.
300x250 ad unit. This is a FootieMate owned ad placement. Short term this will
be filled with Google ads.
Activity Stream. Think of this module as acting similarly to the lifestream con-
cept that’s been around recently. The goal is to give players the option to
integrate their other social activity (YouTube, tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr,
Google Buzz, MySpace etc.) into their lifestream. Although some players might
want to keep this as soccer only, and might not want friend activity or com-
ments etc. in the stream. This approach could gives players the ability to use
their day-to-day social networks and the associated tools to publish content.
We don’t need to recreate those tools. Perhaps we just pull certain tagged
(FootieMate) content from those services? For example a player might use his
iPhone at a game to record a penalty kick at a game and decided to upload
it to YouTube (typical for him). That content would get pulled into this stream
(along with everything else).
Integrating existing Social World. Direct links to players social services and des-
tinations
Your friends on FaceBook. FaceBook friend activity. Standard module from
FaceBook that if you’re logged into FaceBook you can see friend activity.

Footwear Module. This is an example of one of the ways to monetize a player
page. Players add their soccer shoes/cleat/boot information to their profile.
They also rate them. This could be for any piece of equipment (uniforms, goal-

faced elsewhere (In a trends section?). For example: 500 players like the Nike

TEAM HOMEPAGE
Once a player is registered with a new team, the team administrator adds him/her to
the squad, and as part of that process the player is sent an email to check out (and
complete) his player profile. The following dashboard is the homepage of the players

COMPETITIVE
Competitive- Section deals with the most impor-
tant group of teams for a Club. They are competi-
tive players who pay the most, and will play the
longest (years). Even at a younger age these play-
ers are recruited heavily.
TEAMS
Team homepage breaks down into four catego-
ries (Boys, girls, mens, womens and coed). Every
team may not use all of these categories. Each
team has a homepage that they’ll use to post
scores, schedule and general information. Ex-
pectation is that there could be 4 to 40 different
teams. Consider that a U10 - Boys team will turn
into U11 - Boys team the following year, and we
might want a simple way for a team to update all
teams at the end of a season. They’ll also need to
update the roster for new players + ones who’ve
moved on. The URL should be concise and infor-
mative: www.carlsbadwave.com/u10boys
COACHES
A simple page that displays bio information for
each coach. Important for teams to sell their
coaches expertise. Will include bio, photo,
achievements and contact information.

CAMPs & CLINICS
Informational pages that act like flyers to promote
camps and clinics. Page will contain information,
video, photos, coach and price information. There
may need to be an online registration component
built for this. But this may not need to go through
the league (CALSOUTH) the way the formal regis-
tration works, and perhaps we link out to Paypal.
Current players may have a way to sign-up within
the dashboard view.
TRYOUTS
Informational page describing the process to trout
for a club. Information will be a short description,
photo, video, date and time and location of the
field.
LEAGUES & STANDINGS
This is a very important FootieMate feature. It deals
with a clubs relationship to a league. Many of the
official/formal leagues (CALSOUTH) will have all
of the teams scores and results, schedules and a
league table, so we might want to iFrame or just
link to that information. Further investigation is re-
quired to see if theres a feed to pull the content
into the club site. When we build a solution for the
leagues it will include that information, and the
efficient admin process that goes with it. It will also
allow us to dynamically integrate scores, sched-
ules (player registrations) once, and it will appear
across the entire system (Clubs sites, leagues sites
etc.).
FAQ’S
List of typical FAQ’s. Will anchor link questions to
answers on one long page.
RECREATIONAL
This group is for less serious and younger kids to
play organized games against each-other. Acts as
a farm system for
REGISTRATION
Explaining how registration works across teams and
the league. Outlines key dates and process. Focus
is on attracting new players, and directing them to
the relevant sections of the site.
SCORES & SCHEDULES
This page will act like a traditional scoreboard,
displaying the latest scores from all teams. Click-
ing on a game module will bring users to a game
detail page. There are 3 states to scores (Pre, Dur-
ing and Post). Pre-state displays the fixture with
relevant game information (time, venue, weather

etc.) During follows the game and attempts to dis-
play the score as the game is progressing (Via Twit-
ter or SMS). Post displays the final game score. We
should consider the archived state of each weeks
games, we may still want to navigate to them
throughout the year. The following year will include
playing the same teams in the same venues (prob-
ably at different times), and we do want the ability
to navigate through last seasons results.
NEWS BLOGS
This section will operate like a typical blog. Admins
will have the ability to make posts, add categories
and tags for their content. Snippets of the content
will appear on the homepage, and throughout
the (right channel) site. Hoping we can use some
of the already existing tools mobile tools for Word-
Press to have the ability to make posts from mo-
bile.
BIOS
Landing page displays a condensed view of bios
on key players, coaches and back office. We can
use the same ‘bio’ template/layout for all. This
page is populated from the content that players
add in their profile dashboard. The page will in-
clude a thumbnail image, and several fields. We
can only display player first names (no last names)
on this page (Coaches, and back office are fine).
A condensed version of this bio page displays on
the homepage. It will pull from all bios to display
one random profile at a time. We should consider
an admin function to ‘not display’ a player in the
bios or homepage areas.
ABOUT
These are really simple informational pages. Best to
refer to the Jepgs/Wireframes that will explain how
the pages are displayed.

TEAM HOMEPAGE
Promotional text (with logo) for FootieMate. Needs to be managed through
some kind of FootieMate Super Admin (Across all Club, player etc. sites)
Team Login. All user groups login to their Team Dashboard here. Each user pro-
file (Coaches, Players, Back Office, Parents?) see a different dashboard and
has different privileges.
Team/Club branding. One graphic. Need several sizes as it goes across Mo-
bile etc. Should include a default if nothing is uploaded. Could also include
a sponsor within the same graphic. Should be very easy for admin to upload/
swap images.
Site primary nav. Teams will be able to add/delete categories no differently
then within a typical WordPress site. With that said the site should come out of
the box with a default ‘recommended’ set of navigation categories.
Drop down menus. When a user rolls over a primary nav item they view the
drop down menus.
Feature 1 (2 and 3). This row of Features is used by the site admin to promote
any content, sections or features. These areas should have the ability to con-
tain a full graphic, or smaller photo, but should be type based, and not depen-
dent on graphics.
300x250 ad unit. This is a FootieMate owned ad placement. Short term this will
be filled with Google ads.
Next Game Module. Same functionality as the ‘Next Game module’ within
the Dashboard with one exception. The ‘Player Check-In’ brings the user to a
page were they can login to their dashboard to login, and set their status.
Alerts. The equivalent of a sticky post in WordPress. This post should be the
quickest and simplest way for the admin to post an important message. It
doesn’t always have to be activated.

Your Friends on FaceBook. Your friends on FaceBook. It can’t be ignored as
many of the players etc. will be active on FaceBook, so some level of integra-
tion becomes very important. At a minimum it seeing friend activity (many of
them could be on your team). I’m guessing FaceBook (Groups) is a big com-
petitor of this entire idea, and its likely that that’s what’s player’s and clubs are
using now. By building a FootieMate FaceBook app to work within FaceBook
we might have a better chance of pulling Clubs away from Facebook and to
our full system.
FaceBook friend activity. Standard module from FaceBook that if you’re
logged into FaceBook you can see friend activity.

latest posts are added to the homepage content stream.

ents and fans to follow their teams. This page brings fans to a page of links with

scores and schedules
Scores and Schedules is one of the most important ideas behind FootieMate. Ama-
teur soccer teams do not have game feeds to power any live scoring or social con-
tent streaming. Today, parents, coaches and players create a ton of content around
every game, and I want to aggregate it and add it to a game detail page. I’ve also
been told that coaches are prepared to send SMS messages during games to up-
date things like scores.

bring you to the next days games, and ‘Full Schedule’ bring you to the sched-
ule homepage.
Next game module. This is the same as the ‘Next Game Module’ described in
the Homepage Wireframe (T8.0), and is explained more detail here.
Team name. Name of the team (By age).
Twitter updates. Each team uses a #name on Twitter for game day content.
Players, Coaches, fans and back office can Tweet links, images and posts. We
need to enable the site admin to assign each team with a relevant hashtag to
pull in. All four user groups can use it.
Kickoff time. Data thats pulled from the schedule when its first created. If the
admin decides to change the time of a game the it should be reflected here.
Game detail page. That’s this page. Every game (for each team) gets one.

(right is away). The club admin will have the option to add opponents and
league logos as they create teams when they create the schedule. We should
use a default image when one is not provided.
Team B. This is our (Home team) name and logo. The logo should appear
based of off the registration flow (uploaded there). The title should be the club
without adding the age (U15) part of the name.
Game Score. Can this update via an SMS message? This could be the coach-
es responsibility.
Location. Admin has defined the Home field address in the admin (Away
games change address). The map address is part of that.
Weather. Reflects the weather at the current time.
Pregame Countdown. In this state all games will display a countdown clock
thats counting down to the kickoff time.
When does a game change from ‘Pre’ to ‘During’ to ‘Post’ game?
Games change from ‘Pre’ to ‘During’ based off of the game time in the
schedule (created by the admin). Game scores are updated as the game
plays through. Game goes into a ‘Post’ state 4 hours after the start time.
On the Scores & Schedules page when do we switch the mode to go from last
games played to upcoming games?
The page needs to feature the upcoming games, and we push users to the
schedule page to get results. The page needs to change in alignment with the
calendar (At 12 AM it changes to the next day of games). By default it should
not display a day with no games (displays next scheduled day of games).
Question: Is it possible to use tags within an SMS (or Twitter) feed to name scor-
ers and other alerts? I don’t think theres a solution to have an official game
clock.

the Scores & Schedules homepage (SS36.0). Current view is ‘During’.
Game Feed. Same functionality as described on the Scores & Schedules

game. Goal being to get everyone to Tweet with this hashtag (Each team
within a club will use different hashtags). Each week the games will change
but we may decide to use the same hashtag, so 4 days after a game the
stream needs to stop appearing on this game page, and begins to starts to

- When the schedule for a season is being created it needs to be clearly
defined if a game is home or away. Home team is always displayed to
the left. If the Admin doesn’t know then there should be an option
labelled ‘Not determined yet’. It can be updated once the details
are known.
	 - Add all time, address + contact information for (away) games. We should

	 - Weather should be displayed for home and away games, and is defined
by game location information thats entered as games are created in the

the broad audience to follow the game.
	 - Directions information is created when the admin creates the game in the

be an admin option to present the page as public or private (or both).
Public is featured on the clubs site for fans etc. to view. Private is just within
the team dashboard.
	 - Check-In. Huge feature that has a massive significance for Mobile usage.
Players, Coaches etc. click ‘IN’ if they can make the game, ‘OUT’ if they
can’t, and ‘NOT SURE’ if they are not sure. Players etc. will want to change
their status at the last minute, so when a player logins for the 2nd or 3rd

their status again and the new status gets displayed in the coach’s admin.

I’m guessing FaceBook (Groups) is a big competitor of this entire idea, and its
likely that that’s what’s player’s and clubs are using now. By building a Footie-
Mate FaceBook app to work within FaceBook we might have a better chance
of pulling Clubs away from Facebook and to our full system.
FaceBook friend activity. Standard module from FaceBook that if you’re
logged into FaceBook you can see friend activity.
Game Reporter. One of the biggest challenges a team has is that theres so
much work to do in coordinating a game (and season), that creating any form
of game recap, blog post, photos and videos falls to the bottom of the list. It’s
usually done by volunteers or parents for the kids who play. Every user of the
system should have the ability to create content about a game. Consider the

game). Consider archival. Don’t see a need to store all of this media (Videos
and Photos), or to recreate already existing software/functionality thats on IOS,
Android (Camera, Gallery etc.), Flickr and YouTube. Creating content broad-
ens the value of the game. Adding comments, rating etc. adds a ton of value.

MVP. Coaches can create monthly, weekly, and seasonal MVP’s. Could be
great data to capture and present over the course of a season. Could be a
fun way for coach’s to help motivate players. Could also be a value credential
for a player to include in their personal page. Think mobile context first. A par-
ent, coach or player is at the game and the ability to vote real-time vote is the
most useful context. * Is this a paid feature?
Twitter Integration. Automatically pulls in Tweets from the players, coaches and
back office. Offer players the option of adding any other Twitter accounts?
Should have the ability to re-tweet + compose a Tweet. When a club comes
on should they have the option of using an existing Twitter account or creating
one for this functionality.
Book of Skills. Allows any user group to keep notes, and information about their
own skills and game. This is a big Mobile feature. Players can write whatever
they like as a coach is briefing them on how to play. Would be great if there
was a way for players to sketch/draw illustrations too (Send, Sharing would be
great). This is a private feature. * Is this a paid feature?
Videos & Photos. This is a list of any photos and videos that have been posted
by the player/team on various social media sites (YouTube, Flickr etc.). By de-
fault we could utilize existing channels (within those social sites) for a coach
or club, or we could create one for each team/club? Clicking the links pulls
the content in and displays/plays in an overlay. Perhaps an enhanced ver-
sion could be to store the media locally, but I feel like that’s going to go to far
away from the main idea. * Is this a paid feature?

Why WordPress?
My goal is to utilize the social and open source nature of development. That’s a key
selling point to soccer teams (Your/our money is being spent wisely). For the past 12
months I’ve been thinking of WordPress as the platform behind FootieMate. Its been
so easy to create demo sites, its possible to create great design and UX sites, and the
extensibility of the plugin architecture makes it easier to keep up with whats happen-
ing on the web. I know there are security and integration concerns with WordPress, but
maybe some plugins are a place to start and we then create our own. I’m also a little
concerned with how any platform can extend through to mobile. Mobile will be the
driver of the entire idea. My preference is to work backwards from the mobile context/
features/functionality first.
Hopefully some of these plugins help you get a better understanding of the
functionality I’m thinking about.

MOBILE TEAM SITE
Mobile is a crucial part of the entire digital system. Soccer players and coaches are
usually playing soccer instead of being in front of their computer, so we have to be
where they are. A huge challenge is coordinating the when, who and how to play.
The same level of effort can go into small pickup games as a larger official club game.
The ideas fall into 3 categories: pre, during and post game. Pre is coordinating and or-
ganization (Maps, directions, check-in who’s playing), During: what’s the score, pho-
tos, videos, Post: Who won, who scored, game review, photos etc. Most of the usage/
effort is during and post game (while the game is going on from the sideline, and on
the way home).

  • 3. FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011 Exactly what problem is being solved (value propo- sition)? The FootieMate Digital Platform aims to create the perfect web system for soccer players, teams, camps and leagues. It’s a fully hosted, fully featured, affordable, easy-to-maintain and profes- sional digital system. We consider it as a system because the so- cial web, PC based and mobile web, and future devices (tab- lets) all need to work together to create a smart digital strategy. Value for money The limited web/digital budgets are being wasted on the wrong things. For example: Archaic and one off custom platforms and technology, that can’t scale or embrace new formats like Mo- bile. Sport marketing approach to users Overall the quality of logos, UX, visual and information design, and branding is of low quality. In my experience its because the bar is so low in sports. Mainly due to the predominate role of marketing in the industry, and sports marketing has many design crimes to pay for. Lack of expertise Soccer Coaches and typical club back office staff are not the best people to be creating requirements for a clubs digital strat- egy. It’s not their expertise, and its luck (lots of volunteering) if a team ends up with a half decent site or plan. Repetition Every player, team and club has the same needs. Coaches I’ve spoken to are screaming out for the right solution. It’s about time Amateur soccer wouldn’t exist without the concept of commu- nity. Tons of hours are dedicated every week to helping people play. Since the early days of the web this category has been largely ignored, or the only option has been through get-rich- quick style solutions. For whom do we solve that problem (target market/ segment/persona)? Any soccer team, coach or soccer related business owner that has a limited budget, requires a smart digital strategy, needs to recruit and register new players, and wants to get the most from digital media. How big is the opportunity (market size)? Soccer is in need of a complete digital strategy. There are mil- lions of kids, teenagers, adults and older men and women par- ticipating in player soccer across the world, and my goal is cre- ate a digital strategy, tools and a community to make it even esier to play. • 4. “The 300,000 soccer clubs worldwide are com- prised of 240 million players, 30 million of which are women” Luring more athletes to play soccer the answer? http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=670368&sec=u s&root=us&cc=5901 “300 million people and 3.9 million registered youth players” How will we measure success (metrics/revenue strategy/business/model)? Numbers Number of players, teams, clubs, leagues and associations that sign-up for the service. Revenue Model There will be minimal revenue until the numbers of players, clubs and leagues reaches a high enough number to warrant it. The overall spirit of the idea needs to take hold, and a community of soccer players and developers need to work through a defi- nition phase before it becomes a real source of revenue. In the spirit of an open community I think it’s the right move to be rela- tively public and transparent about the costs to build and up- keep the system. In many ways thats part of the appeal - with the lack of digital expertise in sports too many clubs are spend- ing what little money they have on the wrong solutions/things. All of the following are real possibilities, it’s a just a matter of when is the right time to activate them. Ad Network Create an ad network with a very specific demographic. The design and layout of the site will focus include IAB placements to serve FootieMate owned ads and sponsorships. The right ‘exclusive’ sponsor Exclusive sponsorship. One core sponsor (Nike, Toyota etc.) that fits the platform buys the entire platform. I don’t think an ‘ad- free’ version of the site is a good idea because its kills the op- portunity to do an exclusive sponsorship deal. Affilate marketing There are a ton of opportunities to create useful and contextu- ally relevant features that link out to relevant partners. Subscription model Theres an immediate layer of ‘free’ required because over the next twelve months we need as many players and teams to sign up as possible. Subscription model comes in when the next layer of tools and services for all users are launched in the sys- tem. Thinking very much like the approach of Linkedin. 4 PAGE Market Requirements Document FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
  • 5. What alternative are out there now (competitive landscape)? Facebook (Groups) http://www. facebook.com Many teams still want their own web site, and want to incor- porate team sponsorship and branding. Players don’t want coaches, parents and soccer friends mixing with their day-to- day friends and activities. Features are not specifically aligned to the day-to-day aspects of soccer. Ultimately there needs to be a Facebook solution for a club using FootieMate, and might need to be something we create for launch. Active Network http://www.activesports.com Possibly the biggest competitor. They’ve been around for awhile, and their experience has gotten them good partner- ships with many organizations (AYSO). Not that their site gives a strong indication of their work, but I sensing that UX and design are not the top of the list with their solution. Theme-ing. Compare the way Twitter allows a user to theme a site, in contrast to the older ways of doing that. Users don’t mind working with a template, as long as its the right template and there’s a level of flexibility. Users can spend minutes or hours de- signing their theme on Twitter. Their platform feels dated and is not constructed on a social or mobile platform, and I’m sure the costs of making that happen are not cheap. Their lack of specificity (Multiple sports) with soc- cer means theres a layer of features that probably don’t exist. Although they are focused on many of the right features (regis- tration, donations etc.) There’s absolutely no sense of community with how this was de- veloped or run, it’s just a service. I want FootieMate to more like Pandora. It’s empowering people to play soccer (Watch less, play more - is a dream I want to see happen). Club Website UK http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/ A solid competitor, that’s soccer only. Based in the UK and has been around for awhile. They’ve managed to offer free sites with ads. I was concerned about their offering until I looked at their demo sites. They are truly terrible. They feel like first genera- tion web sites that are not built on a social and mobile platform. There approach predates Twitter, WordPress, tumblr etc. The UX and design of the FootieMate system will be significantly easier to create, will look more professional, and won’t have features that require clubs to spend a significant amount of time to run/ operate. They are a little bit more focused on their efforts to em- power the overall community. SquareSpace http://www.squarespace.com I like this entire concept and figure they were mentioning. Low 5 PAGE Market Requirements Document FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
  • 6. cost and custom design with a very tech/social savvy strategy. Mobile formats, social are all the right features that people in the know require, and that first generation sites don’t have. Big- gest issue is that they are not specific enough to soccer to have the right features etc., and being a solution for all limits their ability to form a community within an industry or category. My Football Club http://www.myfootballclub.co.uk Different kind of business. But I want the sense of community that these guys have. This is the best soccer idea on the inter- net. ScoreYard http://www.scoreyard.com Using player registration upfront to organize your team. Unclear on the details about this one. Not much to see on their site, but feeling like broad sports focus. Fubles http://www.fubles.com European and only mobile led solution. Good to compare how they immediately use Facebook connect to sign up. They are focused on multiple sports, and it feels like its not necessarily offi- cial team based leagues, more aligned to pickup soccer (Play - now - right here). I consider this to be just one feature. Definitely one I would like, but I want to be more focused on organized clubs, and leagues. I’m confident that all of the organizational aspects of running a team (admin workflow) are better handled through a PC on the web then through a phone. Demosphere http://www.demosphere.com E7SPORTS http://www.e7sports.com/ Blue Sombrero http://www.bluesombrero.com/ Why are we best suited to pursue this (differentia- tor)? We’re soccer players whose day jobs are designing and build- ing web sites. We’ve worked closely with soccer teams to get a good understanding of what coaches and players need from a web site. We also know that managing a soccer team off the field is a ton of work, and the right digital tools will result in a coach spending less time behind a desk, and more time coaching. My own personal bio might be relevant here. Why now (market window)? Mobile & Social - Watching, participating, organizing and learn- ing about soccer has taken on a whole new meaning with all of the new social and mobile features that all ages are using. Am- ateur soccer can now have a LIVE component with the geo- graphically aware participants, and ease of creating and pub- lishing content. Mobile and social might be the only web format that kids around the world experience (PC is what dad uses for work). 6 PAGE Market Requirements Document FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011

  • 8. Worth mentioning that registration, player roster/squad management, schedule (check-in, game page, scoring & schedule page are the primary reasons why clubs will have an interest in the system. Having the ability to sign-up, create a site and the below fea- tures are what’s needed for launch. They also need to work on mobile (However, we can scale back on some of those features). A) High-level tasks: • The sign-up/registration process on FootieMate.com • Create a profile with a photo, bio, location, add their social services, and contact information • They should be able to create a site in minutes (Registration flow will reflect that) • Once signed up a club admin should be able to add a full squad of players and schedule to activate the player/coach dash- baords • FootieMate ads that are embedded within every template need to be operational (Google ads for the short term) Questionable for launch: • Signing up via mobile • Teams should be able to make payments to FootieMate for general services. Could be just Paypal. • Perhaps for launch we focus on player, team and clubs (multiple teams). Leagues and associations come later B) Transition from your current site • Clubs should have multiple options for a new site. They can create a new FootieMate URL, continue with their old host, or work with a preferred partner for a new hosted site with their own domain name. We should get a referral fee. • They should have the ability to create news blog posts, add schedule, and copy and paste as much content as required from their old site C) Design & Themeing 8 PAGE FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011 Footiemate.com (sign-up + club) launch plan
  • 9. • They should have the ability to change the color scheme/style of their site and add an image at the top of the page • They should be able to contact us to create new logos + header imagery as a paid service. • They can upload a new header image • Make sure to include image sizes for mobile Questionable for launch: • Theme gallery. A team should be able to browse design themes (same theme, just color options), and can select one and thats the style for their site (They add their logo + header imagery) • An image gallery for header imagery. A team should be able to browse header imagery, and can select one for their site (They can download and add their logo, then upload to their site) D) Team/Club Public Site - Core Features • I’ve looked through the features from page 21 and 22 for a team site (T1.0 - T15.0) and I’m not sure if anything can be eliminat- ed for launch? All considered integral to getting a team excited enough to sign-up. E) Team Dashboard - Core Features • Launch: D1.0, D2.0, D3.0, D4.0, D6.0, D7.0, D8.0, D9.0, D11.0, D12.0, D.15, D16.0, D.17, D.18, D.19 Questionable for launch: • D5.0 - A player or coach has the ability to create a separate (player, coach) site thats independent of their existing club one. We could just have a link back to FootieMate.com to create a normal player/coach site. What would be ideal is that the player personal/bio info could be imported into that work-flow. The player may choose to set a different status (Wants to leave their cur- rent team without them knowing). • D10.0 - Coaches Journal 9 PAGE FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011 Footiemate.com (sign-up + club) launch plan

  • 12. PRIMARY USER PROFILES There are four main user groups that will have a vaslightly different content and features. They are: Coaches - Think of Coaches as a layer of content and activity that sits above the schedule and player information. He needs tools to manage the day-to-day management of the team, and tools that specifically help his players and staff. Players - We need players to feel that FootieMate is credible and best place to be if they are serious about soccer. At a minimum they can have their own personal site, or if they are playing for a club they need to use the dashboard and tools. Many players will only utilize the mobile version of the system (Where, what, when etc.). At a minimum we need their basic information (name, contact and social) to have a dashboard. Back Office - The organizational right-hand-man of the coach. They run the site. Add/delete pages. Add/delete/update profiles. Work with sponsors. Coordinate the calendar. Deal with registration and finance. Parents/Fans - For kids teams the parents will be the main voice of the (kids) players. They also have access to spectator style tools that help them report and capture information and stories about games. 12 PAGE FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
  • 13. KEY FLOWS 1. High-level view of the overall system. 2. Soccer players across all demographics and geographies are the key target for the entire FootieMate Digital System. We are creating tools that enable them to play more often, easily meet other players, find teams and leagues, put themselves in the shop window for other teams, and to improve there skills and fitness. What inhibits players abilities from playing comes down to organization and communication. Soc- cer players are the most important aspect of the entire system. Our tools will fill the void. 3. The season schedule content and functionality is the most important feature on the site. It’s the cornerstone of contextual relevance for a player, coach, back office, parent etc. It’s the reason they will come to the site, and will define the navigation, features, tools and layout of the site. 13 PAGE FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
  • 14. KEY FLOWS: 1. SYSTEM FLOW FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues 14 PAGE This should give a clearer picture of how the flow of sites across the system work together. There are several kinds of content (Schedules, scores, roster etc.) that have a role across everything. The cordination of managing all of these sites is a challenge. I’m not sure if complicated CMS workflows, too many configurations, or settings will be tolerable for this user group. It needs to be super easy to set up and manage on a day-to-day basis. SYSTEM FLOW FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
  • 15. KEY FLOWS: 2. PLAYERS FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues 15 PAGE • By targeting clubs (multiple teams, boys and girls, men and women) we could end up with 75 to 350 players for just one club. • Players can sign up for their own none club related page. Per- haps they want to use the page in order to get a slot on the best club in a league • When a club creates a new season they MUST add every mem- ber of the squad into the system. At a minimum its name, address, email, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. The flows here demon- strate just how important that data is for the overall effectiveness of the system. • Players don’t have to have a public facing player page. They are presented that option when they login into their clubs dash- board page. That one dashboard manages their public page. • Some players could play on multiple teams and may only need one personal page. • When a coach is creating a team site for a club they might decide to not include player pages (for every player or just for some). They still need the player data so the player data (and utility for the player) can be used in the dashboard. PLAYERS FLOW FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011
  • 16. KEY FLOWS: 3. season schedule FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues 16 PAGE • Each season could be used as the pay mode for the site. Per- haps theres a mode for the off-season or theres a camps mode (changes the site navigation, functionality etc.). • Should understand if its possible to hook in any Facebook, Google calendar or other method of creating or viewing events • The schedule defines the business for a club. The number one business goal for any soccer school and camp is to get x amount of players registered as soon as possible for their teams. With that out of the way they can focus on practice and games. • The system needs to switch seasonally. We should archive each season (including content) by switching years. • The first two things a club needs to do when they create a site is to create the schedule for the system and enter the squad information. • Players and coaches will have the ability to check-in for a game. This feature is to solve for the guess work of who’s going to make it to practice and games. Coaches will have a ‘Who’s checked-In view’ so they can quickly see if they have enough people. • Each game will have a page dedicated to it. It will pull in all of the content for that game. The content comes from all of the user groups in the form of Tweets, video (YouTube), SMS, blog SEASON SCHEDULE FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011

  • 18. player HOMEPAGE This site should mostly run on autopilot. Its should be a minimal amount of effort for a player to create, and should not be considered a replacement for a players Face- Book page. It’s goal is to be a players public soccer profile. They will use it as a refer- ence to prospective coaches and (soccer) friends. It’s not a typical WordPress blog. Players will be locked out of many of the typical WordPress Admin features. Can’t change categories, themes etc. But if a player wants to use it as their primary blog, it allows for posting. I see this as a free page for anyone to create. Ultimately this player directory could live as a directory off of the main FootieMate.com site. (Same could be said for a club directory). Should mention that a basic level of themeing and color schemes will happen here. The goal is to give players the option to integrate their other social activity (YouTube, tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Google Buzz, MySpace etc.) into their lifestream. Although some players might want to keep this as soccer only, and might not want friend activity or com- ments etc. in the stream. This approach could gives players the ability to use their day-to-day social networks and the associated tools to publish content. We don’t need to recreate those tools. Perhaps we just pull certain tagged (FootieMate) content from those services? For example a player might use his iPhone at a game to record a penalty kick at a game and decided to upload it to YouTube (typical for him). That content would get pulled into this stream (along with everything else). Integrating existing Social World. Direct links to players social services and des- tinations Your friends on FaceBook. It deals with a clubs relationship to a league. Many of the official/formal leagues (CALSOUTH) will have all of the teams scores and results, schedules and a league table, so we might want to iFrame or just link to that information. Further investigation is re- quired to see if theres a feed to pull the content into the club site. When we build a solution for the leagues it will include that information, and the efficient admin process that goes with it. It will also allow us to dynamically integrate scores, sched- ules (player registrations) once, and it will appear across the entire system (Clubs sites, leagues sites etc.). Acts as a farm system for REGISTRATION Explaining how registration works across teams and the league. Outlines key dates and process. Focus is on attracting new players, and directing them to the relevant sections of the site. SCORES & SCHEDULES This page will act like a traditional scoreboard, displaying the latest scores from all teams. Click- ing on a game module will bring users to a game detail page. Ama- teur soccer teams do not have game feeds to power any live scoring or social con- tent streaming. Today, parents, coaches and players create a ton of content around every game, and I want to aggregate it and add it to a game detail page. I’ve also been told that coaches are prepared to send SMS messages during games to up- date things like scores. Games change from ‘Pre’ to ‘During’ based off of the game time in the schedule (created by the admin). Game scores are updated as the game plays through. Game goes into a ‘Post’ state 4 hours after the start time. On the Scores & Schedules page when do we switch the mode to go from last games played to upcoming games? The page needs to feature the upcoming games, and we push users to the schedule page to get results. The page needs to change in alignment with the calendar (At 12 AM it changes to the next day of games). By default it should not display a day with no games (displays next scheduled day of games). Question: Is it possible to use tags within an SMS (or Twitter) feed to name scor- ers and other alerts? I don’t think theres a solution to have an official game clock. • 53. 53 1 Why WordPress? My goal is to utilize the social and open source nature of development. That’s a key selling point to soccer teams (Your/our money is being spent wisely). For the past 12 months I’ve been thinking of WordPress as the platform behind FootieMate. Its been so easy to create demo sites, its possible to create great design and UX sites, and the extensibility of the plugin architecture makes it easier to keep up with whats happen- ing on the web. I know there are security and integration concerns with WordPress, but maybe some plugins are a place to start and we then create our own. I’m also a little concerned with how any platform can extend through to mobile. Mobile will be the driver of the entire idea. My preference is to work backwards from the mobile context/ features/functionality first. Hopefully some of these plugins help you get a better understanding of the functionality I’m thinking about. 53 PAGE FOOTIEMATE - The Perfect Web System for Soccer Players, Clubs and Leagues WEB: www.footiemate.com EMAIL: FootieMail@gmail.com Version 1 | June 27 2011

  • 56. MOBILE TEAM SITE Mobile is a crucial part of the entire digital system. Soccer players and coaches are usually playing soccer instead of being in front of their computer, so we have to be where they are. A huge challenge is coordinating the when, who and how to play. The same level of effort can go into small pickup games as a larger official club game. The ideas fall into 3 categories: pre, during and post game. Pre is coordinating and or- ganization (Maps, directions, check-in who’s playing), During: what’s the score, pho- tos, videos, Post: Who won, who scored, game review, photos etc. Most of the usage/ effort is during and post game (while the game is going on from the sideline, and on the way home).
