4. James, the first King of Scots In 1603, James inherited the throne of England when his cousin Queen Elizabeth 1 died. James traveled south to England, where he remained most of his life. 8. Anne, the new Queen When Anne gave birth to a baby girl, no one would have guessed that she would be the next ruler of their English throne. Charles pressed his families rights to the succession to the thrones of Britain.
