Twitter is an online social networking service
and microblogging service that enables its
users to send and read text-based messages
of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets".



Twitter is on online communication tool
Platform for listening to others in new ways




Created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and
launched in July.
Over 500 million active users as of 2012
◦ Over 1.6 billion queries daily




2007 – 1.2 million tweets per year
2008 - 4 million per year
By June 2010 – 65 million per day
◦ 750 tweets per second





By March 2012 – 340 million tweets per day
October 2013 – 500 million tweets per day













Lady Gaga (40.2 million followers worldwide)
Barack Obama (38.2 million) - highest ranked account
representing a politician
Taylor Swift (35.4 million)
YouTube (34.7 million) - highest account not representing an
individual
Rihanna (32.1 million)
Instagram (28.0 million)
Britney Spears (20.8 million)
Britanny Spears (32.9 million) - highest ranked account based
outside the United States
Justin Timberlake (27.1 million)

2. writer’s Twitter @name
3. writer’s User name – e.g. John Smith
4. The “recycled” icon shows that the tweet you’re reading is a Retweet
5. The name of the person who retweeted this message.
6. The little balloon indicates a Google Maps reference in the tweet.
7. Image – the tweet contains a picture
8. Video – a video is embedded in this tweet
9. Reply – the tweet you’re viewing is a reply to an earlier tweet.
10. Expand – clicking here expands the sidebar to “drill down” on the current tweet.
11. The age of the tweet i.e. how long ago it was posted.
12. The #hashtag and is automatically hyper linked.
13. This is pretty much a standard hyperlink to an external location.
14. Also known as an @mention shows that this tweet is referencing another Twitter user.
15. Clicking on the @username expands the sidebar to show a summary profile of the person.









