International Conference on
               GANDHIAN VALUES:
    SUSTAINABILITY & CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

               (GV:SCG-2011)

               7-9, October 2011
Institute of Business Management and Technology,
                Bangalore. INDIA
Corporate governance broadly refers to the rules, processes, or laws by which
businesses are operated, regulated, and controlled. It is believed that well-defined and
enforced corporate governance provides a structure that, at least in theory, works for
the benefit of everyone concerned by ensuring that the enterprise adheres to accepted
ethical standards and best practices as well as to formal laws.

In recent years, corporate governance has received increased attention because of high-
profile scandals involving abuse of corporate power and, in some cases, alleged criminal
activity by corporate officers. An integral part of an effective corporate governance
regime includes provisions for civil or criminal prosecution of individuals who conduct
unethical or illegal acts in the name of the enterprise.

While most corporate have set of rules and procedures in place yet these have not
deterred the individuals from indulging in acts that go far beyond the framework of
rules, and ethical values. It is in this context that the human values become relevant.
The moral values which Gandhi practically illustrated in his daily life are persistently
advanced as profound and credible answers to the ever-intensifying crisis that confronts
the corporate activity. The Gandhian vision is a means to rejuvenate the entire nation
and all other sectors of activity. Therefore now, much neglected Gandhian economic
thought and praxis demand an exhaustive re-examination in the context of corporate
governance.

  • 1. International Conference on GANDHIAN VALUES: SUSTAINABILITY & CORPORATE GOVERNANCE (GV:SCG-2011) 7-9, October 2011 Institute of Business Management and Technology, Bangalore. INDIA
  • 2. Corporate governance broadly refers to the rules, processes, or laws by which businesses are operated, regulated, and controlled. It is believed that well-defined and enforced corporate governance provides a structure that, at least in theory, works for the benefit of everyone concerned by ensuring that the enterprise adheres to accepted ethical standards and best practices as well as to formal laws. In recent years, corporate governance has received increased attention because of high- profile scandals involving abuse of corporate power and, in some cases, alleged criminal activity by corporate officers. An integral part of an effective corporate governance regime includes provisions for civil or criminal prosecution of individuals who conduct unethical or illegal acts in the name of the enterprise. While most corporate have set of rules and procedures in place yet these have not deterred the individuals from indulging in acts that go far beyond the framework of rules, and ethical values. It is in this context that the human values become relevant. The moral values which Gandhi practically illustrated in his daily life are persistently advanced as profound and credible answers to the ever-intensifying crisis that confronts the corporate activity. The Gandhian vision is a means to rejuvenate the entire nation and all other sectors of activity. Therefore now, much neglected Gandhian economic thought and praxis demand an exhaustive re-examination in the context of corporate governance.
