INTRODUCTION
Can you imagine your life without your
smart phones? Televisions? Computers?
Computers
have become a useful part of our
everyday lives.
WHAT IS A COMPUTER?
A COMPUTER is a machine that
receives and processes data to
produce results. It performs tasks
and calculations according to a
set of instructions or programs. A
computer can store, retrieve,
process, and communicate data.

USES OF A
COMPUTER
How does the use of computers make every work easier in
terms of giving and receiving information?

● Type and print
● Compute numbers
● Draw and color
● Doing your homework
● Send e-mail
● Search information
● Watch and listen
● Play games
● Communicate
The following are some of the things that we can
do using the computer in the easiest ways:
• used by teachers and students for
academic purposes
• for preparing notes and
presentations of their lectures
• researchers use computers to get
easy access to conference and
journal details and to get global
access to the research material
EDUCATION
• GPS/GPRS
• used as a piece of standard
equipment in vehicles
nowadays
• automatic vehicle runs with
the aid of what we call a
computer box.
TRANSPORTATION
• replacement of telephones
• videocalls and emails
• information is fast all around
the world
• shop online or make
reservations

• complex scientific
calculations for designing
and making drawings
• journals and articles

TYPES OF A
COMPUTER
What are the different types of a computer?
03
They are typically larger and
more powerful than other types
of PC. They are made of
separate components and are
commonly used at home, work,
school, or the library.
DESKTOP
COMPUTERS
Compact computers with
rechargeable batteries.
They are portable and can
be carried anywhere. These
are designed to fit in on
your lap.
LAPTOP
They are mobile PCs that
combine features of laptops
and handheld computers.
These are special types of
notebook computer that
allows you to write and
draw on the screen using a
digital pen.
TABLETS
They are built with a mobile
operating system with a
digital camera, media
player, calendar, WIFI, web
browsing, and others. It
allows you to send and
receive e-mail.
SMARTPHONES
These are any devices that are
used in conducting a game.
They are programmed to output
audio and video signals to
display interactive games.
GAME
CONSOLES/
DEVICES
They are small, mobile
computing devices designed to
be worn. They include activities
like tracking and can be in the
form of watches and smart
glasses.
WEARABLE
DEVICES
A server application is a
computer that is used to
service requests by sending
back responses. It is a
computer system that is used
as the central provider of data
in a network.

ADVANTAGES/
DISADVANTAGES
What are the advantages and disadvantages of computers?
04
1. SPEED- The use of the computer
helps us to do our work faster. They
have replaced the use of manpower
in carrying out tedio
us and repetitive work.
2. RELIABILITY- Electronic
components in modern computers
are reliable because they rarely
break or fail.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
1. VIOLATION OF PRIVACY- There is
a chance that the privacy of a
person can be violated if these
personal and confidential records
are not protected properly.
2. IMPACT ON LABOR FORCE- Since
computers can process information
much faster than the human brain,
the skills of millions of employees
have been replaced.
3. CONSISTENCY- Computers
generate error-free results,
provided the input is correct and the
instructions work.
4. STORAGE- Computers can store
enormous amounts of data and
make the data available for
processing anytime it is needed.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
3. HEALTH RISKS- Prolonged or
improper use of computers can lead
to health injuries or disorders.
4. IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT-
Computer manufacturing processes
and computer waste are depleting
natural resources and polluting the
environment
5. COMMUNICATIONS- Computers
allow users to communicate with
one another.
6. VERSATILITY- It is versatile. It can
perform different types of tasks with
the same ease.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
5. PUBLIC SAFETY- People tend to
share personal information publicly
on the internet without caution,
unaware of the fact that they may
become a victim of computer crime.
