1. Question 6
What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
2. What I realised once we had
started...
In the process of making this media product I have learnt a lot
about the time and effort that it takes to make a fairly short clip.
To start off with I don’t think I realised when I started this
process that it would take such a long time to do everything. I
think that i had expected to start the filming and get it all done in
one hit but it didn’t work like that. Sometimes there are problems
with the camera, lighting and the charge or even sometimes the
memory card has I have learnt that there is much more to it than
going out with a camera and filming a few friends and then taking
it home and putting the footage on a software easily and add a
soundtrack. I had obviously had a taste for this type of
coursework when we did our preliminary tasks, they taught us
some of the skills that I needed to know, but for the proper one
of which we have done it was much more difficult than this.
3. What I realised about the
camera…
To start off with I definitely learnt a lot about the cameras of
which we used to do the filming and the lighting and the tripod. I
didn’t really take much consideration or thought when it came to
lighting before we went and tried to film some footage. As our
genre is psychological thriller I realised that I needed to make
sure that it was relatively dark and as a team, myself and Ali
decided that we would be indoors and then come to the door and
use the lighting as the background. This was an okay idea but
we did have to see which inside light of which we wanted to keep
on and whether it was going to look professional enough.
Therefore it was a bit of trial and error with that, we did
eventually get it right after also discovering that shadows were
also going to be an issue. I also learnt that we have to double
check everything, for example we were going to go and do some
filming and then realised that the camera wasn’t charged which
is an issue as we could swap and change when we were going to
film a clip. We didn`t really use the tripod in the end, other than
when there is the clip of the phone ringing on the side, there is
the phone there and the camera is dead still.
4. Premier Pro and using the
softwarte on the computer…
The next thing of which took longer than I had expected and was more difficult was
putting each of the individual clips on the computer and then putting them in order.
I think that this was really difficult as they were all numbered and because we
didn’t film all of one thing at a time it took a while to go through each of them when
trying to put them on to premiere pro. I think that if i was to do the filming again
and then do the same, before I wanted to put each of the clips into the software
that i would go through them and name them so then it would make using the
software quicker and more effective. Once the clips were on the program I had a
slight issue with rendering. When we started I was really new to the software so I
didn’t know when to render and that it should be done regularly. Therefore I didn’t
render it and the program would close down and it wasn’t until afterwards that I
realised that this was why the program was closing. So this taught me to every few
changes to render the clip and then it wouldn’t take so long and the program itself
would be much faster. I have also learnt on premiere pro how to add sound as
before i wasn’t very able to do this and it was very difficult to add it and make it fit
in properly, I am happy I now know how to do this as it is very vital when it comes
to editing. In our final edit we also added some diegetic sound it would be more so
real and creep the audience out more and i wouldn’t have know how to do this
before with the different layers where as now I know how and how to trim it and
have it the length of which I need it. I also learnt the different effects of which
premiere pro has to offer, I can fade different clips together now and make them
seem one whereas before the transactions from one of the clips to the next clip was
not smooth and did look very unprofessional.
5. Timing of the clips
Also another thing of which I didn’t really think
about was the timing of the clip, for example I
thought that it would all just fit in an order with
the sound over the top but again it doesn’t quite
work like that. It took a lot of time and was very
trial and error to get the clips to work together
with the sound. For example, just before the film
title comes on the screen is the lighter and it
snaps shut just as the title comes on to the
screen, but the music has been building up in the
background and it was difficult to try and time
this correctly and make sure that it looked
professional in the mean time.
6. Blogging on the Internet
Also, another thing of which this coursework and
using the different technologies has taught me is
about the blogging on the internet. Before this I was
not very good at using the internet blogging as I was
unsure on how to blog sufficiently and make it look
good. I found it difficult to add posts and time after
time ended up forgetting to categorize each of the
posts so they would be very hard to find on my blog.
I think that through this process that my skills on the
blog has improved greatly and now find it relatively
easy to try and change a post title or even change
the title of the post. I know where to find it and how
to change the little things of which I wouldn’t have
known how to in the past.
7. To Conclude
Overall I think that this process has definitely been
frustrating as there was a lot of things of which I
didn’t know about and hadn’t really thought about
before I started but it is also very rewarding. I really
like how it makes me feel when I can do something
correctly and efficiently without having to ask for help
every five minutes. I think that my camera skills and
editing skills will continue to improve a long with my
blogging skills. I believe this because at the start of
this process they were really not very good and have
improved and I have proved to myself that I can do it
and can make a good media video having not done it
in the past.
