How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Social groups in our piece
• We use a very selective social group, white
middle class. This is a very residual ideology as
characters in horror films are rarely ever not
white.
• However we use three female characters and
one male character which challenge the
patriarchal ideology.
• Sexuality and disability are not an issue in our
opening.
3. How are they represented?
• The three girls and Max are represented in a
negative way. The teenagers are shown as being
materialistic and weak while Max is shown to be
unhinged and dangerous.
• These are residual ideologies of white middle
class characters because although they dominate
the industry, they are often mocked.
• Charlie as the protagonist is represented in a
positive way, the final girl, also a residual
ideology.
4. How are your representations
technically constructed?
• We technically constructed these
representations through mise-en-scene. We
used props, Hannah’s phone, to make her
appear shallow and oblivious and also to
represent the youth of today being obsessed
with technology, and chloroform to show the
danger of Max’s plans and mind-set.
5. How does your media text serve to
reinforce or challenge ideologies that
are in our current society?
• Our media text portrays today’s obsession with technology
in a negative way, showing it as materialistic and shallow.
• It also shows mental disorders in a positive way because
Charlie’s ability to see what happens to the three girls is
useful in warning her of the dangers to come.
• It reinforces the dominance of white middle class but as we
were working with people only in the Tunbridge Wells
area, there wasn’t a lot we could change about that.
• Our media text has mainly residual ideologies and so does
not challenge any stereotypes or representations.
