Lesson 1
Definition and Process of Communication
Objectives
- Define communication
- Explain the nature and process of communication
- Gain understanding on how communication is an
important aspect of human life
- Explain why there is a breakdown of
communication
- Gain insights on the effects of culture in
communication
Activity 1.1
Recall the last conversation you’ve had with
someone.
What happened in that conversation?
Who were you with?
What did you talk about?
Where did it take place?
Whether we are talking or texting, video or voice
mail-chatting, tweeting, or commenting on a
Facebook status, we choose to communicate
throughout the day. We continuosly manage and
enact our relationship through our daily
communicative experiences.
The act of having conversations with anyone is
called COMMUNICATION.
Communication comes in many forms. It is not
simply about the spoken word in conversations.
Look at the figure below which depicts
communication.
The working definition of communication calls
attention to four essential points;
1. That communication involves people.
2. That understanding communication involves
trying to understand how people relate to each
other.
3. That communication involves shared meaning,
which suggests that in order for people to
communicate they must agree on the definitions
of the term or symbols they are using; and
4. That communication involving symbols-
gestures, sounds, letters, numbers, and words-
can only represent or approximate the ideas
they are meant to communicate.
The picture suggests that for an effective
communication to take place between two or
more individuals present in any
communication event the sender sends ideas
in verbal or nonverbal form to a receiver. On
the other end the receiver upon receipt of the
message and decodes the message in order to
provide feedback.
Decoding a message is dependent upon many
factors. ( which may cause Communication
Breakdown )
- cultural background of the receiver
- the incongruence between the verbal
language and the nonverbal gesture.
- feedback, which completes the
communication cycle. ( verbal or non verbal ).
Feedback allows the sender to repeat / recast
their message to remedy communication
breakdown.
Clearly, both verbal and nonverbal forms of
communication are of paramount importance
for the message to be received exactly as how
the sender intends it to be interpreted.
The Communication Process
Communication is an activity or exchange that
moves forward from a beginning point. It is
not an object that we can grasp, but it is an
activity in which people need to participate.
It starts long before the words begin and can
last long after the words stop.
The process of communication involves
sharing not only of thoughts and feelings
verbally, in written and spoken mode, but also
of their nonverbal aspects. This refers to our
body language, including the way we dress,
the number and the kind of accessories that
we wear, and all other symbols or artifacts
that relate to the speaker. All these are signs
that communicate indirectly to our audience.
Communication is a process and is
characterized by dynamism. It reflects change
and an active interface. How a conversation
starts may not be consistent with how it ends.
Activity 1.2
Test you Knowledge
Write the word True if the statement is correct and
False if the statement is not.
_____ 1. People’s participation is not a requirement in
the process of communication.
_____ 2. Communication only involves spoken and
written words.
_____ 3. Communication starts even before words are
spoken and can last long after the words have stopped.
_____ 4. Communication may involve any process in
which people share information, ideas and feelings.
_____ 5. There is more than one level of communication.
Activity 1.3
Field Observation
During free time, try to observe a small group discussion
and take note of the dynamics of communication. After
observing, answer the following questions.
1. Is there a common topic of discussion?
2. Is there someone who dominates the conversation?
3. Are the other members of the group showing sings of
agreement or disagreement?
4. How do members show their agreement / disagreement?
5. Was there an instance that communication breakdown
occurred? If yes, how did they manage to resolve
miscommunication? Recount it.
6. Based on your observation, what are the causes of
communication breakdown?
Summary
• Communication is an exchange of ideas or
feelings using words, verbal cues or nonverbal
gestures, and symbols.
• Communication involves a message or idea, the
sender of message, the receiver of message, and
feedback through verbal or nonverbal exchange.
• In order for effective communication to take
place, the message should be clear to the
receiver.
