In mid 2012 the highest court in Russia ruled against gay pride parades in Moscow for the next 100 years. In 2013 a federal bill banned the distribution of "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors. Homophobia thrives not just at legal and political levels but is widespread among the general population; according to a 2013 survey 74% believe that homosexuality should not be accepted by society. As gay teens struggle to find support in public space they increasingly find affirmation online, in closed groups like Deti-404 (The Observer, 2013). Meanwhile, Chelsea Manning, at the centre of a WikiLeaks scandal in 2010, has come out as transgender and has requested that ‘starting today you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun’ (press release, Aug 22, 2013). Chelsea Manning is currently serving 35 years in a male prison facility where she has been informed that the army will not support hormone therapy or sex-reassignment therapy. As surveillance of everyday engagement online is increasingly acknowledged by government and private enterprise (including Google’s gmail service) and young people around the world are being alerted to the dangers of cyber-bullying and online predators, how are social perceptions of privacy and safety shifting? Is a closed group on ‘VK’ (the second biggest social network service in Europe, after Facebook) private enough to provide assurance to young queer Russians? Where will Chelsea seek affirmation with restricted online access in a male prison? Can the Dark Web provide an alternative for subaltern publics? Or does the technical expertise and tenacity required to access these spaces of supposedly amplified security make them unattainable for disenfranchised minorities? This paper draws on current case studies to explore shifting understandings of privacy and networked identity work in cultures where public expression of queer sexuality remains taboo.

A theoretically-grounded learning feedback tool suite, the Visible Effort (VE) Mediawiki extension, is proposed for optimizing online group learning activities by measuring the amount of equality and the emergence of social structure in groups that participate in Computer-Mediated Collaboration (CMC). Building on social entropy theory, drawn from Shannon’s Mathematical Theory of Communication, VE captures levels of CMC unevenness and group structure and visualizes them on wiki Web pages through background colors, charts, and tabular data. Visual information provides users entropic feedback on how balanced and equitable collaboration is within their online group are, while helping them to maintain it within optimal levels. Finally, we present the theoretical and practical implications of VE and the measures behind it, as well as illustrate VE’s capabilities by describing a quasi-experimental teaching activity (use scenario) in tandem with a detailed discussion of theoretical justification, methodological underpinning, and technological capabilities of the approach.

I’ve spent my career so far studying the social outcomes people derive from their use of new communication systems like Facebook. These sites contain numerous affordances that differentiate them from other forms of communication & create low-cost environments for things like relationship maintenance and exchange of resources. I have found this research to be extremely rewarding, as it is important to understand how these social systems extend our capabilities for human interaction, beyond the more traditional forms of communication we have relied on previously. But, there's a flip side to this story. Humans, by nature, are very social beings and want to interact, want to disclose information and share it with others. Social network sites and their like facilitate this through a variety of features. However, as individuals have moved their communication from offline spaces, where the interactions tend to be much more ephemeral and audiences are generally known, to online spaces, where the lines between public and private become much more blurred, I believe that thoughts of privacy of personal information are often lost in the novelty of the technologies. Now, as we begin to think about this issue more and more, I believe it’s time to step back and re-evaluate how we conceptualize our privacy in this highly networked world and to integrate that understanding into solutions that will help individuals become more savvy users of the technology.

Gender swapping on the Internet. Proceedings of INET '93. Retrieved from http://www.cc .gatech.edu/elc/papers/bruckman/gender-swapping -bruckman.pdf In this brief analysis, Bruckman investigates the perceptions of males and females in electronic environments. She argues that females (or those posing as females) receive an inordinate amount of unwanted sexual attention and offers of assistance from males. She also suggests that females (and sexually unthreatening males) are welcomed more willingly than dominant males into virtual communities. She concludes that behavior in electronic forums is an exaggerated reflection of gender stereotypes in real-life communication. The article is interesting and accessible, but it is quite old, and it relies almost entirely on quotations from four anonymous forum participants. Crowston, C., & Kammerer, E. (1998). Communicative style and gender differences in computer-mediated communications. In B. Ebo (Ed.), Cyberghetto or cybertopia? Race, class, and gender on the Internet (pp. 185-203). The findings, while limited, provide evidence that in fact both women and men were less interested in joining forums that were dominated by masculine-style language. These findings seem to contradict the pronounced gender inequality found in the other sources in this bibliography. Herring, S. C. (2003). Gender and power in on-line communication. In J. Holmes & M. Meyerhoff (Eds.), The handbook of language and gender (pp. 202-228). Oxford, England: Blackwell. Herring investigates empowerment opportunities for women online. She points out that, although more than half of Web users in the United States are women, men continue to dominate technical roles such as network administrators, programmers, and Web masters. Even in anonymous online settings, males tend to dominate discussions. And online “anonymity,” argues Herring, may not really be possible: Writing.

Kim 1 Sichan Kim Professor Kauffman English 1 31 May 2014 People Can’t Live Without It Anymore Social networking service may negatively affect a person’s behavior. Forms of such things like instant messaging and chat rooms are called social networking service, also known as ‘SNS.’ SNS shifted the way people communicate, but also affects behavior negatively. Nevertheless, since people live in the world where every single word is sent by technology, living without it seems impossible. The issue is, do e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, and other forms of online communication bring people closer together? All three sources answer “No.” Even though modern technology makes people’s life better, it slowly enslaves them little by little; people can’t live without it anymore. The three sources take up the position that social networking service affects people’s behavior negatively, although with three different perspectives. First of all, the issue of negative effect of technology on communication is viewed by Susan Tardanico from the sociological perspective. Impact on interpersonal communication is the most prominent negative effect of technology on communication and lack of interpersonal communication has reduced the nonverbal grasping power of individuals. Susan Tardanico argues that increased frequency of communication through texting and chatting cause lack of the ability to express the ideas and emotions to others face-to-face. People use their nonverbal cues, such as a smile or a frown when they communicate with others face-to-face and this is another layer of communication. But technology doesn’t allow people to catch these sorts of nonverbal cues. This leads people to misunderstand the actual meaning of what others intend to say (“Is Social Media Sabotaging Real Communication?”). Overall, Susan Tardanico emphasizes technology causes lack of interpersonal communication. The evidence she uses to support her thesis does support her sociological perspective. For example, she writes, “With 93% of our communication context stripped away, we are now attempting to forge relationships and make decisions based on phrases. Abbreviations. Snippets. Emoticons. Which may or may not be accurate representations of the truth” (Is Social Media Sabotaging Real Communication?). For such sociological reasons, author’s position is satisfactorily explained. Furthermore there is the psychological perspective. Moreover, the issue of anxiety disorder was reported by CBS Seattle from the psychological perspective. Facebook and Twitter, the most widely used social networking services now can affect person’s behavior psychologically. CBS Seattle claims that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed. The news goes into detail that behaviors such as having trouble being able to disconnect and relax, spending too much time in front of a computer and comparing themselves to others could be referred to a ...

Aqeel R Alnemer Mr. copley ENGLISH 101 Feb\22\2016 Social Media Impact to Young Generation In this decade social media use has gained high level of usage. Organizations and institutions have shifted from the formal way of communication and connected social media as way of communication because its simplicity. However, with all the applicability of social media in the current generation it has emerged as a tool to destruction for many young people. MySpace Facebook and Twitter are among many social sites that people choose to keep their communication through. Children and young people are using low language, engage in sex, immoral behaviors. Therefore, although social media has its benefits of cross border and regional connectivity of individuals, its impact on young generation morality cannot be overlooked. Social media has caused deaths and social mistrusts among many individuals and businesses. First, social media has been used in spread of movies, audios and pictures that have negative impact to the viewers and especially generation. Lack of censure of the information through the social medial channels allows for any kind of information to pass to different recipients. Young people are the majority of the modern technology participants. Such information may have unaccepted behaviors such as sexually oriented materials, hate speech especially in situation where racial profiling is common, and cyber harass due to the possibility of hiding the identity of the social media participants. Information is known for its ability to change mind set and especially for young people who have not yet developed principles and therefore the information available to such people will be the information they will use to establish their life principles. Therefore sexual, improper communication and violence will be the most common principles that young people affected by these vices will be in their future life. Therefore, the future generation will fancy such vices which have a negative impact to the society in large. For most young people differentiating fantasy from reality has been a great issue. They are exposed to violence in the media which in most cases is a fantasy instead of the reality. Therefore young people believe in the violence spread by the media and they practice such violent acts amongst themselves. They also try the sexual behaviors they witness in the media which in most cases is very risk for young generation. Abortions due to unwanted pregnancies due to uncontrolled sexual behaviors as depicted by the media are become normal with the current generation (Clark 43). Secondly, people and especially young people may not be aware of the privacy and confidentiality their personal data might be. Implication of sharing such information on social media of daring since most of social media sites do not have security policies. Therefore most young people might disclose confidential on the social sites causing distress after their identity and is .

Chapter 10 Interpersonal Relationship Types This chapter focuses on specific relationship types: (1) friendship, (2) love, (3) family, and (4) workplace relationships. We establish what these are and explore how interpersonal communication within each of these relationships can be made more effective. We’ll also examine the dark side of some relationships in the final section. All of these relationships can be face-to-face or online or, as is most often the case, some combination. Online relationships have been increasing since the first online dating service was established in 1995. According to one survey, 38 percent of those who identified themselves as “single and looking” used an online dating service (Smith & Duggan, 2013). Social networking sites such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest; professional sites such as LinkedIn; and the dating sites such as Match.com, eHarmony, and OKCupid (and the numerous apps for your phone such as Zoosk, PlentyofFish, and HowAboutWe) make it increasingly easy and interesting to meet new friends and potential romantic partners, to keep in touch with family (websites that provide family hubs are increasing in popularity), and to conduct much of the business of work. As you’ve no doubt noticed, each type of relationship has both advantages and disadvantages. Here we need to identify just a few of these. One of the advantages to establishing relationships online (though some may say it’s a disadvantage) is that personality outweighs physical appearance. Online communication reveals people’s inner qualities first. Rapport and mutual self-disclosure become more important than physical attractiveness in promoting intimacy (Cooper & Sportolari, 1997). And contrary to some popular opinion, online relationships rely just as heavily on the ideals of trust, honesty, and commitment as do face-to-face relationships (Whitty & Gavin, 2001). Friendship and romantic interaction on the Internet are a natural boon to shut-ins and extremely shy people, for whom traditional ways of meeting others are often difficult. Computer talk is empowering for those with “physical disabilities or disfigurements,” for whom face-to-face interactions are often superficial and often end with withdrawal (Bull & Rumsey, 1988; Lea & Spears, 1995). By eliminating the physical cues, computer talk equalizes the interaction and doesn’t put the disfigured person, for example, at an immediate disadvantage in a society where physical attractiveness is so highly valued. Online you’re free to reveal as much or as little about your physical self as you wish, when you wish. Another obvious advantage of online relationships is that the number of people you can reach is so vast that it’s relatively easy to find someone who matches what you’re looking for. The situation is like finding a book that covers just what you need from a library of millions of volumes rather than from a collection of only several hundred or even thousands. In a ...

Kim 2 Sichan Kim Professor Kauffman English 1 07 June 2014 Social Networking Service: A Blessing or a Curse? Social networking service may negatively affect a person’s behavior. How has social networking service negatively impacted communication? Indiscriminate use of social networking service affects people both psychologically and sociologically. This leads people to experience anxiety disorder and lack of the ability to express the ideas and emotions to others face-to-face. Even though modern technology makes people’s life better, it slowly enslaves them little by little; people can’t live without it anymore. To this end, there should be strict regulation established of use of social networking service. Nowadays, instead of physically seeing social connections on a regular basis, social networking service has become preferred way of meeting people. Technology is getting people more closer by virtual means, but as humans people still seek actual social interaction. Daniel Newman reports “Networks like Facebook and YouTube both exceeding a billion monthly active users it has completely redefined the way we build and maintain relationships. Further it has found its way into our offices, living rooms and even at our dinner tables…Adults spend 20-28 hours a week on social media and on average have 275 personal connections across their social media channels” (4 Technology Trends Disrupting). Here the author affirms that people spend their time with social networking service indiscriminately. Technology brought our communication process to whole different new level; it made our communication process a lot easier and faster. However it affects people’s behavior negatively. That is, instead of choosing to go play outdoors, people are choosing sedentary lifestyles sitting in front of the computers. Maybe because people live in a busy world such as this, the number of people who prefer to communicate with others via technology is still growing. First of all, social networking service left us emotionally drained. People prefer communicating with friends and family through e-mail and texting rather than communicating by letters because of its convenience. Andrew Leonard insists that forms of such things like e-mail and texting made our communication process emotionless. The following passage shows how e-mail and instant messaging make our communication process emotionless. He writes, “So instead of creating something new, we forward something old. Instead of crafting the perfect phrase, we use a brain-dead ab ...
