The professional execution of a system analysis is an indispensable act when it comes to the professional construction of
pipe systems in plant engineering, and in many cases it is even demanded by law. The weyer group is in the position to
look back on many years of experience in the field of stress calculation for pipe systems. By means of a documented engineering
procedure which is strictly conforming to the law, an organizational fault with regard to plant safety and environmental
protection can be excluded at an early stage of the ongoing planning phase. For this purpose, state-of-the-art
software tools like CAESAR II, which is specifically tailored to execute pipe stress calculations, as well as various 3D-design
software tools will be deployed. The advantages of a system analysis are, among other things, lower capital costs and
reduced maintenance expenses, a safe operating of your plant and an optimized design of all joining pipes.

2. • stress verification in case of pressure
surges
The impacts caused by an earthquake
will be calculated by means of a static
subsidiary analysis. At customer request,
a dynamic system analysis might be
executed as well.
Pressure surges induced by quick-act-
ing valves and fittings can be analysed
without previously conducting a hy-
draulic calculation in advance.
In case of different underlying causes, the
first step will be establishing pressure pro-
files and time response by means of a pre-
viously conducted hydraulic calculation.

1 Why stress calculation?
The stress calculation of pipe systems pro-
vides relevant findings for the design, opera-
tion and safety of a plant.
Objectives of a static analysis:
• stress analysis of pipe systems
• proof of the adherence to allowable
forces and moments acting on appli-
ances, technical equipment and joining
pipes
• determination of loads to be discharged
by the building structure
• calculation of displacements of pipe
systems
• establishing storage concepts
Objectives of a dynamic analysis:
• fatigue analysis in case of vibrations

3. Secondary stress
• caused by hindered thermal expansion
(temperature, bearing friction)
4 How will a project be
executed?
The essential steps towards a professional
system analysis are as follows:
Data collection
In case of new planning processes,
isometric drawings and blueprint planning
will be the underlying factors. In case of
old plants, existing plans will be consulted
or the plans and documents will be drawn
by entry of on-site measured quantities.
Stress calculation
A system analysis can be an iterative devel-
opment process in which the designer will
always be involved.
Documentation
The results of the calculations will be
documented comprehensibly. In addition,
the extract will be clearly presented within
a “stress-isometry”.
Typical results are:
• flexibility analysis of the pipe system
• forces and moments acting on hangers
and mounting brackets
• forces and moments acting on connect-
2 Which construction types
are concerned?
The classical applications for a system
analysis are:
• in accordance with the pressure equip-
ment directive, all pipes carrying toxic,
caustic and inflammable agents
• pipes from DN 80 > +300°C
• pipes from DN 200 > +200°C
• pipes > DN 400
• pipes with 2-phase fluid flow
• pipes in which vibrations occur (com-
pressors and piston pumps)
• refrigerating pipes below -30°C from
DN 25
• all high-pressure steam systems (all
nominal sizes)
• all flare systems (all nominal sizes)
3 What are the underlying
bases of the calculations?
The permissible stress values are deter-
mined by ASME B31.1 or ASME B31.3, or
DIN EN 13480 and FDBR respectively.
These are the guiding regulations and
standards for the design and calculation
of pipe systems.
Primary stress
• caused by permanently acting strains
(pressure, dead load, settlements, spring
loads)
• caused by temporarily acting strains
(earthquakes, wind, pressure surges)

ing pieces
• tracking forces and moments to be dis-
charged into the surrounding building
structure
• displacements of pipes
• dimensioning of spring suspenders and
compensators
• designing specific column elements

work system and the corresponding appa-
ratus engineering including the conceptual
design of the pipe supports can be worked
out deploying, e.g. 3D planning tools.
This process can be carried forward until
the stage of order placement is achieved.
Your benefits:
