Any illness will have its own set of treatments and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is no exception.
CTS is caused by a nerve disorder of the middle order in the hand due to continuous work strain. I
was told by my doctor friend that CTS affects many who spend more than fourteen hours in
repetitive action such as typing jobs - be it computer keyboards or manual typewriters.
As most doctors have yet to agree on a single solution for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treatment, the
types of treatments seem to increase almost annually. Here are just a few common Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome treatments available to patients.
1. Conservative Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treatment includes:
a. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) - they are very effective in reducing the
swelling of the median nerve and bringing relief to the pain felt in the hand, the fingers and the
thumb. But then many CTS patients have complained that after taken NSAIDs, they had bouts of
nausea, upset stomachs and stomach ulcers.
b. Physical Therapy - where hand and wrist strengthening exercise programs are specially
monitored and supervised by occupational/physical therapists. Many patients receiving the Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome treatment have benefitted from this therapy and they themselves recommend
and advice this to other Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients.
c. Laser Light Therapy - low-energy laser light is made to penetrate the skin (without any cut) to
stimulate the activity of the cells in the injured areas.
d. Ultrasound - a safe procedure where sound waves are used to bombard the wrists.
2. Surgical Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treatment includes:
a. Open Release surgery - a two-inch incision is made in the palm and the carpal ligament is made
free from the median nerve to release the pressure and thus, the pain.
b. Mini Open Release surgery - one-and-a-half incision is made in the palm and pressure on the
median nerve gets released; thereby reducing the pain and the numbness.
c. Endoscopy - includes a 'single-portal technique' (a small incision at the wrist) or a 'two-portal
technique (a small incision at the wrist and the palm).
d. Percutaneous Balloon Carpal Tunnel Plasty - firstly, a balloon is inserted through an incision of
one-fourth inch in the base of the palm. Then the balloon is made to inflate using a saline solution
2. to stretch the ligament. This releases the pressure on the median nerve.
The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treatments are varied, but why not nip it in the bud right at the on
start and prevent it from happening in the first place? Still not clear - what I mean is if you start
feeling CTS symptoms, immediately take action - after all, 'prevention is better than cure'!
After a long battle with CTS I was able to reverse my condition without the use of any Drugs,
Devices or Surgery.
