This message was sent to our members of the MMT Community after the processing of their feedback off our most recent community gathering in Costa Rica. In hopes of helping other live experience designers / community builders in the space, we plan to share our learnings, playbooks and internal communications like this more openly in the future. Enjoy!
1. TL;DR
- Lessons and Learnings from MMT Costa Rica (+ our NPS)
- Refinements for our 10th year anniversary gathering
- What we’re optimizing for with MMT moving forward
2. With events, it can feel like you’re only as
good as your last performance…
and if I’m being honest, MMT Costa Rica
in January of 2023 was a bit of a relief.
3.
4. 2020 to 2022 are years that I still have
difficulty putting into words.
5. I often share that when one door closes another
door opens, but it sucks being stuck in the
hallway.
The pandemic was a long and dark hallway
for anyone in the live experience industry.
6. Needless to say, there was a lot riding on
MMT Costa Rica.
Thankfully…
7.
8. It was fun, it was playful,
it was connective…
27. One of our key responsibilities when hosting
a gathering is to get MMT Alumni and new
additions to the community to fly in
formation as quickly as possible.
28. Historically, we do a container setting session on
the morning of day one. It’s a big time investment,
but critical to the overall experience.
29. For MMT Costa Rica, we tested bringing
together our new members for a pre-
gathering welcome / orientation in hopes that
we could bring them up to speed with all
things MMT, so that we could hit the
ground running right out of the gate.
30. It was fabulous, and will be integrated
into all of our future MMT Gatherings.
33. After 8 iterations of MMT format (Toronto x 2,
Napa, Ojai, Carmel, Park City, Cabo, Palmetto
Bluff) we finally found the perfect mix of
content, community, connection, and space for
our gatherings.
34.
35. Looking ahead to our 10th-Year Anniversary
Gathering in Ojai California (September 2023)
We’re building off the success
of Costa Rica, and…
37. Also, creating more opportunities for
assigned seating so that meaningful
connections aren’t left to chance.
38. I am incredibly proud that we’ve made it this
far and that many of you will be joining us in
September to celebrate what we’ve co-
created together over the course of a
decade.
46. But now we’re no longer steering a parked car.
We’re getting great traction with MMT.
47. We are embracing the notion of relaxing for the
same result (Derek Sivers) when it comes to
growing MMT with a focus on consistency and
sustainability.
All in service of creating a Community that
compounds.
49. “All the returns in life, whether in wealth,
relationships, or knowledge, come from
compound interest.
Play long-term games with long-term
people.”
50. All of this has given us the space to look long
term.
Decisions change pretty radically when you look
at an organization through a 100 year lens.
51. If you’ve read this in detail, your time and energy is
appreciated. We have more clarity and
commitment to our path ahead than ever before.
52. 1. Less is more.
2. Never cut corners or compromise
3. Optimize MMT for 100 years by serving a
select group of entrepreneurs deeply.
53. For those of you who have been by our side
for some time, all we can say is thank you.
54. Being of service to you is truly an honour,
and is an opportunity we will never take
lightly.
