1. Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Magazine
Firstly, I will be discussing how my magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real
media product.
For the mast head of my magazine, it uses the form and convention of a real product. For example, in a
Diabolique magazine, they often use dark colours such as black, red and orange. These colours connote
danger, death, darkness and horror which is why I have decided to use the colour red to suit the typical
conventions of a horror magazine. I have also decided to use white for the other texts to connote the
characters innocence.
I strongly agree that the images used in my magazine follows the typical conventions of an existing
product. Take Diabolique magazine as an example. When they’re creating a magazine for a horror
movie, they would usually select images from the trailer itself and combine them together. They choose
important images from the trailer to form the movie’s plot.
In my magazine, I have taken an image of Sam being possessed, Jake and I in the woods looking for Sam,
the tree with a ‘Help me’ sign – This explains: Teenagers in the woods (haunted woods) looking for their
lost possessed friend Sam.
The idea of using Sam as the victim in this movie again meets the typical convention of a horror movie –
blonde girls are stupid and weak and are the usually the main victim.
2. While I was thinking about the cover lines I could use for my magazine, I referred back to my magazine
analysis. I have noticed that these cover lines relates to the movie’s genre; horror.
My magazine again meets a real media product’s form and convention as it uses cover lines that relates
to the movie’s genre; Bill Hill is a mixture of Mystery and horror: ‘Puzzle – Solve the mystery’. I thought
that adding a topic about ‘The Blair Witch Project’ movie gives the audience an idea that this movie is
also a documentary.
Poster
3. As to what I have said in my ‘Poster’ post, we have used the Kick-Ass idea of adding the movie’s title on
the poster and separating the letters on each, so that when combined, the audience will able to see
what it really is trying to say. This creates a good marketing campaign which again meets a real media
product’s form and conventions.
I have also found another poster from the movie ‘The Crazies’. It uses a similar technique as Kick Ass but
mainly focuses on the three different types of people. I have copied the colour of their title and also
changed the colour of the institutional logos to white from black to make itstand out more.
4. Using taglines like ‘What happens when you play with spirits?’ creates an enigma to the audience which
is one of the main features a poster should have to attract its audience in watching the movie. I have
ensured that this is not an arbitrary tagline but relates to the movie’s plot.
Here is an example that I found which helped me think about the poster’s tagline:
We have challenged the idea of adding the release date of the
movie instead of putting ‘Coming soon’. We have also thought of
releasing this movie during Halloween to reinforce its genre to
the audience. However, we have added the movie’s official
website for the people who are interested in finding out more
information about the movie along with a hash tag.
Bill Hill – Trailer
Our movie’s trailer partly uses the typical form and conventions of a real media product. Take The Blair
Witch Project and Paranormal Activity for example. We have incorporated how they use their hand held
camera to make the movie look realistic; as if the whole movie was recorded in real life.
Bill Hill and The Blair Witch Project - For the first clip, we have used the same shot (Close up) while
talking to Jake. This also creates direct mode of address where it draws audience in as if they are part of
the movie.
We have also used The
Blair Witch Project as
our inspiration to
create our movie’s plot
but altered it in some
way to make it original;
5. Media students doing their school project in the woods and then disaster happens.
We thought that using a Ouija board in the trailer helps reinforce the horror genre which again meets
the typical convention of a horror movie.
Blonde girls are typically the first victims in horror movies and
also in other movie genres. In the trailer, we have constructed
her attitude to be ditzy and a person who doesn’t take
anything seriously.
However, in horror movies, there will usually be one character
left that will survive and solve these types of situations; most
likely a girl. But in our movie, we will have two characters left;It
partly challenges the typical form and conventions of a horror
movie.
The Brunette girl meets the characteristics of being intelligent
and the one who solves the mystery in the end. Jake on the
other hand would be that type of character that audience
wouldn’t expect surviving. Take the druggy as an example from
the Cabin in the Woods – the character who doesn’t really care
much about anything but to smoke. Jake – laughs along with
Sam and not taking anything too seriously at the beginning.
I have edited our institutional logos to fit in the black background. We have also ensured that these logos
reinforce the horror genre of the movie.
Documentary trailers usually have intertitles like this at the beginning especially movies that involves
mystery. The pictures here on the right are actually from The Blair Witch Project and Devil Inside trailer.
We have copied how they have structured their intertitle and kept it simple and clear to the audience;
to reinforce the sense of mystery in the movie.
Here, we have again added the release date of the movie along with its
official website just like what we see in movie trailers.
6. The Blair Witch Project and Bill
Hill – We have used the same
idea of capturing the scenery
while travelling to our
destination.
This scene here is from the
movie ‘The Woman in Black’.
It’s not shown in its trailer
but we have used the idea of
her carving on the wood -
Bobbi drawing a picture on a
paper to portray the idea of
her being crazy/ possessed.
Ending our trailer with a clip
of the symbol ‘CFC’ will raise
awareness to the audience
and will also create an
enigma. It’s similar to
Cloverfield’s ending with the
man juxtaposing the
previous situation which
again questions their
audience.
