Ayushma will then welcome everyone and thanks them for their interest in joining us to hear more about CMU’s first University-wide, Credit Suisse Trading Challenge. Apologize on behalf of Dean Krishnan by saying he had a prior engagement but is excited to see this take place and that he sends his best wishes. Before we get into the details of the competition, I’d like to introduce our HFC President, Brendan Carroll who will deliver some opening remarks about why this is such a valuable opportunity…(Brendan takes mic)
- Brendan: talk about your personal experience(s) / interest in stocks. Why did you get involved? What fascinates you about the market? Make comments about how this is an integral component of every business, but focus on the personal development aspect….lead into something like “If any of you have seen the incredible show about business ideas, Shark Tank, I think the business magnate Kevin O’Leary really sums up the power of learning these skills early in your career….”

- Now turn the audiences attention to business opportunities – start with something like “Now, in addition to the personal development you would gain by joining our competition, correspondence with the Heinz Career Services revealed that….” and talk about lack of career paths chosen in the Financial realm, DESPITE there being a high level of interest displayed by recruitment teams. Posit we estimate similar stats exist across the campus. Take a second and ask the room what kinds of jobs come to mind when they think about a bank……..(converse based on topics brought up) – next slide will explore a list which is by no means comprehensive in terms of the kinds of positions available today….
- (first click reveals list of positions) Briefly mention a few of the intriguing positions, and talk a little bit about your summer internship experience – the types of people you met, and the number of people you met who have been in the industry for over 15 years (because the work is both financially and personally rewarding). Make sure to note that people our age are apt to be promoted quickly since there is so much room for growth. Wrap it up on a good note by summarizing that this Trading Challenge will be an opportunity for both personal and career development (second click will reveal list of banks we are currently talking to which are interested to learn more about our student body) (work in somehow that even if you don’t go directly into banking, having this knowledge will make you more valuable when sitting at the table for any project) – Introduce Corey as the Trading Challenge Coordinator who will now talk to you about the specifics of the competition.
- Transitioning from the video, mention Investopedia as our simulation software carrier because of the wealth of information provided, and best tested environment. Referencing the video, explain how we can avoid the risk of losing actual money by using virtual currency as we learn. Continue rule by rule…
- Go over the schedule line by line so that it is clear what the intent is for each event. Mention how joining the competition provides access to all of the above
- Talk about Prize amounts for winners, then mention what it costs to sign up (free for HFC members, $15 for non-members, $25 for new membership)
- Talk about why we felt this was a great opportunity by referencing other schools (logos will appear). Briefly discuss how we are in process of channeling the CMU Town Hall as an avenue to discuss bringing a mock trading floor to CMU one day (next slide)
- Tell them where our officers will be around to help sign-up now, and that the practice round will go live @ 9am tomorrow!
