1. PRAYER LIFE
OF A JEW

2. A faithful Jew is expected to live a
personal prayer at home; he prays
every dawn, morning, noon, mid-
afternoon, evening and nightfall. He
should recite Shema prayer at dawn
and nightfall: “ Hear , O Israel! The
Lord is God, the Lord alone! Therefore
, you shall love the Lord our God with
all your heart, with all your soul and
with all your strength”

3.  Most prayers and blessings can be found in
the Siddur, or prayer book. This article addresses
Jewish liturgical blessings, which generally begin
with the formula:
...
Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the
universe..."

4. the verb “sh-m-a” means many things. Here are
some of the meanings it has
 “To hear,”
 “To listen, pay attention, heed,”
 “To understand,”
 “To be willing to obey,”
 “To respond in deed, to do what someone else
wants

5. SHEMA YISRAEL
 ‫שמע‬‫ישראל‬
A centerpiece of Jewish prayer
services which affirms belief and
trust in the One God, the Shema
is composed of three sections
taken from the Torah.

6. Shema is one of the sentences that
is quoted in the New Testament.
The Gospel of Mark 12:29-30 mentions
that Jesus of Nazareth considered the
beginning exhortation of the Shema to be
the first of his two greatest
commandments: "The first of all the
commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The
Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt
love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind,
and with all thy strength: this is the first
commandment." (KJV).

7. In addition, the
apostle Paul reworks the Shema
in 1 Corinthians 8:6 , "But to us
there is but one God, the Father,
of whom are all things, and we in
him; and one Lord Jesus Christ,
by whom are all things, and we by
him." (KJV)[10]

8.  Amidah
 ‫עמידה‬
 The "standing [prayer]", also known as
the Shemoneh Esreh ("The Eighteen")
prayer, is the essential component of
the Jewish services. It is said three times a
day (four times on Saturdays and holidays,
and five times on Yom Kippur).

9.  Birkat HaMazon
 ‫ברכת‬‫המזון‬
 The blessing after meals, thanking God for
the food and His support in general.
 Tefilat HaDerech
 ‫תפלת‬‫הדרך‬
 The traveler's prayer for a safe journey.

10.  Birkat HaBayit
 ‫ברכת‬‫הבית‬
 A blessing for the home often found inside
on wall plaques or hamsas.
 Ma Tovu
 ‫מה‬‫טובו‬
 A prayer of reverence for the synagogue,
recited in the morning upon entering.

stories and teachings of the people of
Israel that were passed on orally from
generation to generation and which
developed over 800 years before
being compiled. The Jewish people
are known as the ‘People of the Book’
because of their commitment to the
Scriptures.
