1. Demonstrative Pronouns
In this lesson, we will take a look at the
demonstrative pronouns (this/these) and learn how
to properly use them in Hebrew.
2. Demonstrative Pronouns
A demonstrative pronoun is a pronoun that is used
to identify a noun. This dog. These hats. These
constructions are very common in Hebrew and will
help when we get to the upcoming questions
lesson.
The word ‘this’ in Hebrew is used almost identically
to the way it is used in English. The only difference
is that Hebrew takes the gender of the noun into
account.
3. Demonstrative Pronouns
Masculine nouns use the word זה (ze) and feminine
words use the word זאת (zot). Both words mean
this. Let’s see a few examples:
הכלבהזה (ha-kelev ha-ze) masculine
האישההזאת (ha-isha ha-zot) feminine
Notice that the word ‘this’ follows the noun. Also,
because you are addressing a specific noun, the
definite article must be used.
4. Demonstrative Pronouns
For plural nouns, the word אלה (ele) is used. This
word means ‘these’ and is used for both masculine
and feminine nouns.
האלה הכלבים (ha-klavim ha-ele) these dogs
הנשיםהאלה (ha-nashim ha-ele) these women

Congratulations!! You have now learned well over
200 words.
To celebrate, let’s see if you can read a short story
using the words you have learned. The English
translation will be on the next slide, but try to
translate the story on your own first. This can
serve as a review for you.
Don’t be overwhelmed, you know all the words in
the story. Try to find the words that you don’t know
in the lessons before you look at the answers.

David hears the lions and the tigers. There is a monkey
eating a banana. They swim with the dolphins and the

They open their bags and eat cakes. David buys an ice
cream. David likes his ice cream very much. Sarah is
drinking tea and David is drinking carrot juice. David
remembers music and they dance with the children.
A little girl wears a beautiful blue and white dress and
an orange hat. She reads about the big gray elephants.
