God once again steps into history to give eternal insight to his people ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE ONE ON THE THRONE ,[object Object],[object Object]

The first image is "like a jasper stone" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The second figure is "like ... a sardius" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The third figure is "a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald …" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

These three stones were featured on the High Priest's breastplate ,[object Object]

On the breastplate, these represented three of Israel's tribes ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

They are also three of the foundation stones of the heavenly city ,[object Object]

The one on the throne receives worship from his heavenly entourage ,[object Object]

The one on the throne is holding a sealed book in his right hand ,[object Object],[object Object]

When all despair of seeing what is in the book, the Lamb of God enters ,[object Object]

When he takes the book, the universe erupts in praise ,[object Object]

As the Lamb opens the seals, God's judgments fall on the ungodly ,[object Object],[object Object]

When the judgments are finished, the godly worship the one on the throne ,[object Object]

At the end of the book, the godly reside with the one on the throne ,[object Object]

By introducing the one on the throne, John tells us about God’s nature ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE THRONE AS A SYMBOL OF GOD'S JUDGMENT ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

"God sits on his holy throne" (v. 8) but the rulers await judgment (v. 9) ,[object Object],[object Object]

Uzziah began ruling Judah at the age of 16 and reigned for 52 years ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Kings and kingdoms may come and go, but God sits on an eternal throne ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

God IS and God RULES! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE THRONE AS THE SYMBOL OF GOD'S MERCY ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

God's throne was a reminder of his presence, protection & provision ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Hebrews says Jesus is the high priest of the true tabernacle ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The earthly tabernacle was a copy of what Moses saw ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

And what is the story of the Book of Revelation? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE REST OF THE THRONE SCENE ,[object Object]

Who are these 24 elders on 24 thrones? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The word for "crown" is the Greek stephanos , not diademnos ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

From these points, it appears that the 24 elders represent the redeemed ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

"Out of the throne proceed lightnings, sounds, and thunders" ,[object Object],[object Object]

This "shock and awe campaign" beat any before or since ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The figures of thunder, lightning & earthquake depict God's judgment ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Isaiah says God will judge the world, including the "kings of the earth" ,[object Object],[object Object]

John sees seven lamps before the throne ,[object Object],[object Object]

These are not the same lamps as in Revelation 1 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

FOUR LIVING CREATURES AND THE SEA OF GLASS ,[object Object]

This scene is similar to one described by Ezekiel ,[object Object],[object Object]

Both mention four creatures, but there are differences ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

What is the significance of the four living creatures and their faces? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The lion was the standard of Judah ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The ox was the standard of Ephraim ,[object Object]

The man was the standard of Reuben ,[object Object]

The eagle had become the standard of Dan ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This is the same order in which Ezekiel describes the faces ,[object Object]

Can there be any doubt about the message of the throne scene? ,[object Object],[object Object]

What about the sea of glass? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

It may also be the basin in the tabernacle & temple called the sea ,[object Object]

Other features of the tabernacle & temple are seen in Revelation ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This particular sea will be seen again in the Book of Revelation ,[object Object],[object Object]

There the overcomers sing the "song of Moses ... and … of the Lamb" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

John pictures the overcomers singing a song of deliverance ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Later, still, John says ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

HEAVEN'S WORSHIP ,[object Object]

The four living creatures lead the heavenly entourage in glorifying God ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The living creatures sing "Holy, Holy, Holy" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE SEALED BOOK ,[object Object]

John sees a book in the right hand of the one on the throne ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Ezekiel had a similar experience ,[object Object],[object Object]

The book John sees is sealed with seven seals ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The apparently insurmountable problem ,[object Object],[object Object]

Isaiah described Israel as a people to whom God's word was sealed ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE WORTHY LAMB ,[object Object]

One of the elders tells John not to give up hope so quickly ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The "Lion of the tribe of Judah" comes from Jacob blessing his sons ,[object Object]

He is also identified as another OT figure - the "Root of David" ,[object Object]

David was the son of Jesse & Jesus is the pre-eminent son of David! ,[object Object],[object Object]

The Lord promised an heir to David's throne ,[object Object],[object Object]

Psa 89:20-37 WEB ,[object Object]

This is a staple of the apostolic preaching in the New Testament ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Paul made the same connection. ,[object Object]

The voice says the Lion … of Judah & Root of David has "overcome" ,[object Object],[object Object]

The Lion has overcome ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The literal translation is "standing as one having been slain" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The Lamb was actually killed ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Isaiah had described the Messiah in terms reminiscent of this ,[object Object]

There can be no doubt who this Lamb is ,[object Object],[object Object]

It reminds us of other passages about our redemption ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

It has "seven horns and seven eyes" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

John saw the lamb do what no one else in creation was worthy to do ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

WORSHIP OF THE LAMB ,[object Object]

In Revelation 4, all eyes had been on the throne ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

John's situation is unique vis-à-vis every human before, or since ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

And when Jesus enters, all heaven erupts with praise! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This is the New Testament counterpart to the "Song of Moses" ,[object Object]

That is the way the concept of a "new song" is used in the scriptures ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

In Rev 14:3, we will read of God's people who have been delivered ,[object Object],[object Object]

Then, just a chapter later, we'll read again of the overcomers singing ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

His death purchased men from every tribe, tongue, people and nation ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

His death made these people into a "kingdom" and "priests" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The chapter began with a question: "Who is worthy?" ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

But "who is worthy" to take the book out of God's hand and open it? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Every created being joins in the act ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The Old Testament background of this entire scene is Daniel 7:9-14 ,[object Object]

In that grand vision, God is seen on the throne, ready to judge ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Ready or not, God's enemy is about to be judged! ,[object Object],[object Object]

The scene in Revelation 4-5 is this ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
