The document outlines three initial ideas for music videos. Idea 1 follows a solo artist who buys a guitar from a homeless man and plays it around the city before returning it. Idea 2 uses a narrative structure to show the singer's parents arguing as he purchases alcohol and fireworks. Idea 3 would be an entirely performance-based black and white video using various camera angles and slow motion shots to avoid repetition. This option may be the most difficult as it requires finding someone skilled at guitar to perform the song.
2. Idea 1
Black and white with a narrative/ performance structure.
Solo artist walking through the city and sees a homeless
man playing a guitar. The singer buys the guitar and walks
around the city playing it. I would use the river Humber for
a lot of the shots as it is quite close to college so it’s easily
accessible for all of the people I need for my video. Other
shots of the singer playing the guitar and singing will be
used in front of a white backdrop, which I would record at
the same time as the photo shoot for the promotional
items. I could possibly use another location for some of my
shots however I can’t decide whether to use The Deep or
somewhere with a lot of grass. At the end of the video the
singer returns the guitar to the homeless man and then gets
on a train away from the city.
3. Idea 2
Narrative structure. The singer is sat around the breakfast
table calmly while his mum and dad rush around him. The
singer gets up and walks out of the house. The camera
follows his dad who is as described in the song, as an
optimist so he would look happy and calm. It then goes
onto his mum, who although is doesn’t say she is a
pessimist, the song suggests it so it would show her looking
stressed and angry. The camera goes back to the singer
walking into a supermarket buying alcohol and fireworks.
The camera goes back to his mum and dad arguing and
then goes back again to the singer who is stood in front of
a fire playing the guitar and singing. The camera then sees
the fireworks go off and the camera fades to a black
screen showing the band/artist’s name in white.
4. Idea 3
Performance structure. All of the video is
performance and in black and white. I would
use a variety of camera angles and movements
to stop the video from looking repetitive. I would
like to use some slow-motion shots too like in The
1975 – The City video. This video would probably
be the most difficult to film because it would
mean having to find someone who can already
play the guitar and have them learn the song or
teach someone from scratch whereas with a
narrative, it wouldn’t be as noticeable if the
main character isn’t playing properly.
