23. Islam is the name of religion brought by all
messengers of Allah from Prophet Adam to Prophet
Muhammad (s.a.w) – peace upon them.
Islam is also known as “ The Way of Life ” because
Islam is a complete way of life that governs all facets
of life: moral, spiritual, social, political, economical,
intellectual, etc.
In the religious sense, Islam means submission to
the will of God and obedience to His law.

24. In order to enter into the fold of Islam i.e. to be Muslim, one has to
know, believe, accept totally and sincerely apply the five basic principles
(Pillars) on which Islam is based: Ibn Umar narrated that the
Messenger of Allah - Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said:
Islam is based on the following FIVE PILLARS (PRINCIPLES)
1. Shahadah: declaration of faith
2.Solah: five daily prayers
3.Zakah: giving charity
4.Sawm: fasting during the month of Ramadan
5.Hajj: pilgrimage to Makkah
• Ever y Muslim tries to carr y out these five things,
by carr ying out these duties it helps the Muslims
put their faith into action.
27/11/2011 GROUP 4: PPG TESL 4 ( SECTION 71 ) 24
26. This Pillar is believing and saying :
“There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of
Allah.”
•This declaration of faith is called the 'Shahadah', a simple formula that all
the faithful pronounce.
•The significance of this declaration is the belief that the only purpose of
life is to serve and obey Allah, and this is achieved through the teachings
and practices of the Beloved Prophet, Muhammad (s.a.w )
27/11/2011 GROUP 4: PPG TESL 4 ( SECTION 71 ) 26
27. Solah is the five daily prayers which need to be offered at set times during the day.
Before offering Salah Muslims need to prepare themselves by making sure they are clean. They
do this by carrying out Wudu (ablution), which is washing themselves.
All Muslims stand upright on their prayer mats facing Ka’bah in Saudi Arabia.
Muslims pray to remember Allah and to be close to Allah.

29. • Sawm means fasting during the month of Ramadan every year.
• Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Fasting is not eating and
drinking during the day while the sun shines. Muslims fast to gain Allah’s favour
and to keep themselves away from greed and selfishness.
• At the end of Ramadan Muslims all around the world celebrate the festival of Eid-
ul-Fitr, a day of joy and thanksgiving to Allah. On this day Muslims offer special
prayers and thank Allah for His blessings and mercy.
O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed
for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun.
