For me, it was a new way
to motivate myself.
Running for races, I’d
done that. It’s like the
perfect combination. I can
give something back, do
something constructive
with my running.

It’s very helpful. I’m
often on my own. It’s
bad when you’re living
on your own. I’m lucky.
It’s something for him to
do and it’s something
for me. I look forward to
it.

This talk is going to be about computer games where you kill things and what we might be able to learn for the infrastructure of our cities.
Exercise has been designed out of our lives, particularly our lives in citites. .
As a result, it becomes an independent commoditised experience.
We are living in a strange time where, exercise is not a part of life anymore, but something you buy.
So has giving, and doing good for each other. And so has the connectivity between us. We’re now very disconnected from the people around us.
We are even afraid to speak to each other in pubs, only 40% of us now feel happy to talk to each other in pubs.
Older people are left very much alone. Those who suffer form this isolation the most are older people.
13% of older people are always or often lonely.
50% of people speak to neighbours less than once a week.
Perversely, population density increases isolation.
16% are always or often lonely in Aus

So in 2009 I founded a thing called Good Gym.
It connects people who want to get fit with tasks that need doing in their communities.
We pair runners with elderly immobile people.
They run to their homes. Deliver something nice and then run home again.
It gives them a good reason to run and gives the older person some friendly human contact and a free newspaper.
I don’t do any other voluntary work. I don’t get round to it. I don’t have time and I’m busy with my work. [GoodGym] allows me to carry on with my life.
I like the fact that someone depends on you and that you make someone feel better. I know that for her its a big deal me coming over.
I can’t walk far, even the hospital have to collect me. So It’s been a big difference. If other lonely people could get someone to know and chat it would be great... We find we have things in common and we chat. I look forward to it. It will be a lot of help for people on their own.
