Cultural diversity is the term used to describe many different cultures co-existing within one larger culture. The fact that we can eat so many different types of cuisine in the United States is because people from other countries have immigrated to the US and brought aspects of their own cultures with them. This means that under the umbrella of American culture there are actually many different ethnic traditions being practiced in communities around the country. As an abstract concept, cultural diversity is actually pretty straightforward; however, finding a concrete definition of culture can be a little bit tricky. This is because the definition of culture can change depending on who's using it and the context in which it's being used. For example, some people use the term to describe the creative arts, like dancing or painting, while others use it in a much broader context to refer to all of the traditions, practices, and belief systems of a particular population of people. For the purposes of this lesson, we are going to look at culture as the latter of these two definitions.

The present essay review, though shorter than the piece I am accustomed to write, focuses on the commonalities between tourism and archaeology. At acloser look, we aretaught tourism is a commercial activity, sometimes hedonist or naïve that entertains lay people. Rather, archaeology signals to a serious academic discipline, enrooted in the quest for truth. Nonetheless, archaeology and tourism shares the similarly-minded cultural values, the reconstruction of past. Our thesis rests on the idea that the tourist gaze searches for the ideological message to remind its superiority over other cultures or peripheral voices. In addition, it is important to note that tourists and archaeologists need from the same degree of exceptionality and novelty to validate their status to others.

The research investigates the emerging role of cultural institutions that, responding to the expectations of contemporary audiences, are shifting from being providers of content, to being facilitators of experiences around it. The overall aim is to envision novel paradigms for audience engagement within cultural institutions, outlining a general framework for the design of effective participatory experiences of heritage.

Written by Tobias Golodnoff / Miriam Lerkenfeld The objective of the research is to give a theoretical understanding of the value created when digitising a cultural heritage. This research is grounded in a case study of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s Cultural Heritage Project. The project deals with the digitisation of an analogue radio and television collection of more than 500.000 hours of content, and with the work being done after digitisation ensuring archive content in collaboration with other public cultural institutions and the research community becomes available to the public. The project group is an inter-organisational team combining expertise from many places within the organisation. When establishing a project of this kind, some aspects have significance on the value creation. Findings are, that flexibility is key, and hence, the use of resources within the budget should not be too specific, because it is unpredictable where cost can be cut, or where extra resources will be needed. Also, a scanning process is essential for defining the objectives of future tasks, and focus should not be to solve one problem, but exploring challenges that can be useful for different scenarios. In addition, findings are that collaboration is a good tool for diffusing digitised cultural heritage, and these collaborations should have a variable, decentralised structure, in order to facilitate different needs and objectives. Another emphasis should be put on the openness towards collaboration partners, so shared value can be created and utilised - benefiting not just the organisations, but society in general. Conclusively, the overall goal when digitising the cultural heritage is always to make it accessible for the users. The conclusion leads to four principle guidelines which are: use is value, transparent boxes, open source collective, flexible frameworks, and project economy. Finally, a vision is presented, a society where public service is substituted for public resources, constructing a all-encompassing cultural production system with fluid borders and autonomous projects based on a set of clearly defined objectives.

Displayed Objects, Indigenous Identities, and Public Pedagogy BRENDA TROFANENKO University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign In this article, I describe how one group of student examines indigenous identity formation as dynamic and open to reinterpretation. Drawing on field observations and interviews with students in a 16-month ethnographic study, I examine how one group of students worked toward understanding how indigenous identity was determined by curatorial authority and histori- cally defined museum practices. I argue that students can question the traditional pedagogical conceptions of indigenous culture that ought to be reconsidered within the public museum, and that working to historicize such conceptions makes more explicit student knowledge production of identity. [Indigenous, identity formation, pedagogy, public museums] As institutions primarily dedicated to the display of cultures, ethnology museums have long been sites for the invention of essentialized indigenous identities.1 The materiality and physical presence of objects within a museum provide the public with perceived access to understanding the indigenous world and, more specifically, indigenous culture. The authority vested in the museum, as a place to learn through objects, labels, exhibition notes, and curatorial expertise is responding to concerns by indigenous groups about the absence of their presence in the museum project. Although museums are engaging in critical and reflexive examinations of their man- dates and practices, as manifested as the “new museology” (Sherman 1994; Vergo 1989), this enduring self-reflexivity has witnessed limited changes to the larger educational project inherent in the public museum. The public ethnology museum remains foremost as an institution where one attends to understand culture through the displays of objects. In spite of the self-reflexivity, indigenous identities in public museums remain essentialized, rendered ahistorical, and devoid of subjectivities and dynamism (Ames 1992; Cruikshank 1995; Thomas 2000), ignoring the centuries of social, domestic, and economic challenges facing indigenous groups themselves.2 This has prompted questions about how, as Mieke Bal (1992:561; cf. Macdonald 1996:86) asks, knowledge about culture is “taken in and taken home.” In this article, I present portions of a yearlong research project in which students attending an ethnology museum worked to understand indigenous identity and its formation through the traditional pedagogical conceptions of culture as defined by the museum, notably through the display of indigenou.

Abstract: Until recently Greece was a migration sender rather than a host country. But, over the last 20 years, things have changed and, according to the National Statistical Authority (2011), the percentage of aliens residing permanently in Greece is 8.34%, of which 52.7% come from Albania. Thus, the student population is significantly heterogeneous, and the demand for new curriculums and textbooks which are in accordance with universal agreements and conventions that promote equality, mutual respect and human rights was intense. However, how can we create a cohesive and democratic society while at the same time allowing citizens to maintain their ethnic culture and identity? These two concepts, interculturalism, on the one hand and nationality on the other, were the motive forces for writing this paper. In particular, this paper aims at examining, through content analysis of the texts and the activities and by following the summary method, how potential it is to implement intercultural education through literary textbooks, which are used in the Greek primary schools over the last years (since 2001 and 2006). The results showed that the references to high interculturalism prevail. There are a few references to the additive or to the contributions approach, while the presence of strong national elements is not intense. The references to mild nationalism are increased.

This study examines the life histories of four Adult Cross-Cultural Kids (ACCKs), from various racial and geographical backgrounds, to answer the following research question. For effective practice in global education, what can we learn from exploring the education and lived experiences of ACCKs? Participants were ACCKs, which means they experienced two or more cultures, and two or more educational systems throughout their developmental years, that is between the ages of 0 and 18 years. Goodson’s Life History Interview methodology was adopted in this study to understand the positive and negative influences each participant faced within education. The participants’ personal dynamics on education were examined through their narrative, with a specific focus on what education was like and what a global education meant for them. The main themes that emerged from the life histories were school culture and workforce, and representation in education and media. There was an underlying intersectionality of race, skin colour and class, with a cultural bias, towards the West and whites or light-skinned, embedded within the educational system, teaching workforce and learning culture. The findings of this study highlight the problems when developing global education. Subsequently, there is a need for creating equality of race, skin colour and class within curricula, teaching and the learning culture.
