southerners, pioneers,
and northern Federalists
were especially mad
 Free states were gaining
more and more power -
they already had a
majority in the House of
Representatives – so the
odds had to be evened
for the slave states

5.  Henry Clay of Kentucky stepped in and came
up with a bundle of three compromises to
permit Missouri as a slave state
 1. Missouri would enter as a slave state
 2. Maine would break from Massachusetts
and enter as a free state
 3. Slavery was
henceforth outlawed
north of Missouri’s
southern boundary

7.  Compromise of 1850 –
 1. California was admitted as a free state
 2. New Mexico and Utah were opened to
popular sovereignty
 3. Introduction of a strict Fugitive Slave Law

8.  Kansas-Nebraska Act –
 Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois wanted to split
the Territory of Nebraska
 Missouri Compromise was totally thrown out
when Kansas became a slave state
