5. ERP in general Overview What Is Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)? The term “ERP” is now generally used to refer to an “enterprise view” of a business. In other words, it means leveraging IT applications to manage the operations and gain a view of a company as a connected single entity, as opposed to a collection of activity silos. The term “Business Applications Suite” includes ERP and Customer Relationship Management (CRM). What are key ERP Application Traits? ERP applications address a business processes ERP applications are modular ERP applications are integrated ERP applications extend a company's reach beyond its walls - to its suppliers, customers, and partners An entire ERP suite will address all areas (or the great majority) of a company's business functions The advantages of an ERP Business Applications Suite, such as Microsoft®Dynamics NAV, include: Scalability Business Applications Suites are designed to grow with the company. Unlike some stand-alone applications, they do not "top out" without defined transition paths to other solutions Functionality Access to the functionality required to run the business over time - at an affordable price point. It may not be the cheapest choice at first - but it will usually be the most economical in the long run as business needs grow and change Reliable service and support The ability to access affordable service and support is critical. It is easier to support an integrated ERP environment than a collection of different applications
6. ERP in general Why Microsoft Dynamics? Difficulties Suite of ERP applications can be matched to specific business needs Offers complete solutions, including all functionality necessary to run customers businesses Is completely compatible with the familiar, easy to learn and use Microsoft® productivity suite and tools Is fully customizable and able to integrate and interface with multiple systems Enables fast, ‘cookie cutter’ implementations across multiple sites or for a single instance serving multiple sites Supports integrated business visibility across the entire business and throughout the extended supply chain Lower licensing costs Backed by Microsoft Lower overall total-cost-of-ownership (for all the reasons mentioned above) Company is using spreadsheets and home-grown applications or old systems to manage its operations Pain – Lack of flexibility, difficult to pull out useful reports, becoming expensive to maintain, may be crashing often Company is using multiple applications for their systems Pain – Lack of coordination between applications – financial application not linked to manufacturing, inventory or purchasing Company is finding that its existing ERP system is too expensive for use at its subsidiaries or operating divisions Pain - A single year maintenance fees on Oracle or SAP can equal the entire Microsoft® Dynamics NAVimplementation
