We used to have the "Scientific Work" web page on our site where we kept record of publications by the company workers in various printed issues, their report at a conferences, etc. These activities are of no commercial value, so we cut their number and stopped keeping record of them. Now we have decided to delete the page itself too as being of no relevance at all. But before doing that I decided to write this blog-post to summarize our scientific work. This post is intended for students who plan to take practical training in our company and is meant to demonstrate that our area is knowledge intensive, so they can choose its subjects for their theses.

This talk is based on a short chapter to appear in a forthcoming book on "Perspectives on Data Science for Software Engineering", it can be preordered here: http://goo.gl/Wi30Ra Abstract: Software analytics and the use of computational methods on "big" data in software engineering is transforming the ways software is developed, used, improved and deployed. Software engineering researchers and practitioners are witnessing an increasing trend in the availability of diverse trace and operational data and the methods to analyze it. This information is being used to paint a picture of how software is engineered and suggest ways it may be improved. But we have to remember that software engineering is inherently a socio-technical endeavour, with complex practices, activities and cultural aspects that cannot be externalized or captured by tools alone---in fact, they may be perturbed when trace data is surfaced and analyzed in a transparent manner. In this talk, I will ask: - Are researchers and practitioners adequately considering the unanticipated impacts that software analytics can have on software engineering processes and stakeholders? - Are there important questions that are not being asked because the answers do not lie in the data that are readily available? - Can we improve the application of software analytics using other methods that collect insights directly from participants in software engineering (e.g., through observations)? I will explore these questions through specific examples. I hope to engage the audience in discussing how software analytics that depend on "big data" from tools, as well as methods that collect "thick" data from participants, can be mutually beneficial in improving software engineering research and practice.

Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of determining the best answer in Community-based Question Answering (CQA) websites by focussing on the content. In particular, we present a system, ACQUA1, that can be installed onto the majority of browsers as a plugin. The service o↵ers a seamless and accurate prediction of the answer to be accepted. Previous research on this topic relies on the exploitation of community feedback on the answers, which involves rating of either users (e.g., reputation) or answers (e.g. scores manually assigned to answers). We propose a new technique that leverages the content/textual features of answers in a novel way. Our approach delivers better results than related linguistics-based solutions and manages to match rating-based approaches. More specifically, the gain in performance is achieved by rendering the values of these features into a discretised form. We also show how our technique manages to deliver equally good results in real-time settings, as opposed to having to rely on information not always readily available, such as user ratings and answer scores. We ran an evaluation on 21 StackExchange websites covering around 4 million questions and more than 8 million answers. We obtain 84% average precision and 70% recall, which shows that our technique is robust, effective, and widely applicable.
