Cloud-native describes a way of building applications on a cloud platform to iteratively discover and deliver business value. We now have access to a lot of similar technology that the large internet companies pioneered and used to their advantage to dominate their respective markets. What challenges arise when we start building applications to take advantage of this new technology? In this mini-conference, we'll cover what it means to build applications with microservices, how cloud-native integration and concepts like service mesh have evolved to solve some of those problems, and how the next iteration of application development with Functions as a Service (FaaS) and serverless computing fit into this landscape. You'll hear from industry experts Burr Sutter and Christian Posta who recently authored a book Introducing Istio Service Mesh for Microservices about these topics. Want to support and monitor the implementation of the FP7 Open Access pilot? Want to help your faculty members comply with the Open Access requirements of the European Commission (EC)? Interested in learning more about making your repository compliant with the OpenAIRE infrastructure? Want to add EC project data to your repository records and use OpenAIRE value-added functionality (post authoring tools, monitoring tools through analysis of document and usage statistics)? See the slides from our online workshop! In order to harvest and connect publications to related EC FP7 grant agreement and calculate the percentage of Open Access versus non-Open Access publications, the OpenAIRE project requires repositories to adapt to the OpenAIRE Guidelines. These are low-barrier requirements for OAI-PMH compliant repositories that build on the oai_dc and DRIVER Guidelines. When your repository is OpenAIRE compliant, its FP7 funded content is harvested periodically, indexed within the OpenAIRE portal and presented in the OpenAIRE search and browse section. In this way, FP7 funded research results deposited in your repository can achieve wider visibility and distribution – and be read, used and cited more widely by the global research community. Research managers in your institution will be able to compare your institutional performance in FP7 projects with the performance of other institutions in your country and within the European Union using the OpenAIRE FP7 publication statistics tool. You will also save time for researchers at your institution. Repositories, successfully harvested by the OpenAIRE, are entitled to display the OpenAIRE logo on their website, to certify quality and the global networked status of their content. The OpenAIRE project team can help you with your targeted advocacy activities to ensure that high quality content is deposited into your repository and then harvested by the OpenAIRE portal. "Event Modeling is a fairly new information system modeling discipline created by Adam Dymitruk that is heavily influenced by CQRS and Event Sourcing. Its lineage follows from Event Storming, Design Thinking, and other modeling practices from the Agile and Domain-Driven Design communities. The methodology emphasizes simplicity (there are only four model ingredients) and inclusion of non-developer participants. Like other modeling disciplines, Event Modeling is sufficiently general to enable collaborative learning and knowledge exchange among UI/UX designers, software engineers and architects, and business domain experts. But it's also sufficiently expressive and specific to be directly actionable by the implementors of the information system described by the model. During this talk, we'll: * Build an Event Model of a simple information system, including wire-framing the UI/UX experience * Explore how to proceed from model to implementation using Kafka, its Streams and Connect APIs, and KSQL * Jump-start the implementation by generating code directly from the Event Model * Track and measure the work of implementation by generating tasks directly from the Event Model"

As a result of fantastic growth, the software industry has undergone the next step in "solution evolution" over the past 5 years. Enablement tools like Docker, AWS/GCE/Azure, OSS visibility/availability and architecture structures such as distributed computation, microservices, event sourcing and reactive solutions have brought forth more robust and scaleable solutions. The platforms of the past have either kept up with the trends and become more nimble and lean, or have fallen off to the side and become relics of the past. This deck discusses the differences between large monolithic e-commerce platforms versus more modern, lean e-commerce frameworks and why architectural structures are important when selecting a platform to increase the likelihood of future proofing your solution.

After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
